Xi'an, in full
Five days for the warriors, the wall and a sacred peak

The Terracotta Army, a 600-year-old city wall, the Muslim Quarter after dark, a sacred mountain 30 minutes away by rail, and a far trip out to Famen Temple — this is the 5-day plan that digs deeper than the usual run-through.

Why give it 5 days

Xi'an was capital to 13 dynasties — five days to reach its core

Plenty of people give Xi'an two days, see the Terracotta Army and fly on. That's a shame, because this is old Chang'an (长安) — the start of the Silk Road and capital to thirteen dynasties. The first layer is the one everyone knows: Qin Shi Huang's clay army. The next layer is the walled old city, the most complete in China, with its Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and a Muslim Quarter where the smell of cumin and charcoal fills every lane. And the last layer sits outside the city — Mount Hua, half an hour away by train, and Famen Temple, which holds a finger-bone relic of the Buddha.

This 5-day plan is built to be clearly different from the 3- and 4-day routes — Day 4 is a full day on Mount Hua (one of China's Five Sacred Mountains), and Day 5 is a far day trip most people skip: pick Famen Temple or the Hanyangling mausoleum, then round it off with markets and one last great meal. With less time, see the 3-day plan or 4-day plan instead.

Before you go, read the full Xi'an city guide to decide which district to stay in — because your base shapes every day in this plan, especially the mornings when you head out to the train station.

5 days · 4 nights Full day on Mount Hua Far trip: Famen Temple / Hanyangling Budget ¥600–1,400/day/person
1
Day 1
The Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace below Mount Li
Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army in the excavation pits at Xi'an, rows of life-sized clay warriors
🌅 Morning — the Terracotta Army
Head out early to beat the tour buses — to the Terracotta Army (兵马俑). Take tourist bus 游5 (306) from the East Square of Xi'an Railway Station; the fare is ¥7–10 (~฿35–50) and the ride is about 1–1.5 hours. The ticket is ¥120 (~฿600), which includes the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum park (Lishan Garden), and the site opens 08:30–17:00 (Mar 16–Nov 15). See Pit 1 first — thousands of warriors lined up in the earthen trenches, a sight no photo ever fully captures. Read the full Terracotta Army guide for pit order and crowd-beating tips.

☀️ Afternoon — Huaqing Palace
On the way back, the 游5 (306) bus stops right at Huaqing Palace (华清宫) at the foot of Mount Li — the Tang court's hot-spring retreat, where Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei came to relax, and the site of the 1936 "Xi'an Incident." The late-afternoon light softens the gardens and pools beautifully. See the Huaqing Palace guide. In the evening there's a "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" outdoor show on the hillside (separate ticket, book ahead).

🌙 Evening — back to town, take it easy
Return to the city for the evening and rest up — Day 1 covers a fair bit of ground. Keep dinner light tonight and save your appetite for the Muslim Quarter tomorrow. For a first taste of the city's signature dish, try yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍) — mutton soup with hand-torn flatbread that you tear into the bowl yourself.
Tip: if you'd rather skip the public bus and the queues on Day 1, a half- or full-day tour with transfers and a guide is available on Klook. Going independently, bring your passport and pre-load your ticket via WeChat to move through far faster.

Day 2
The walled old city, Bell & Drum Towers, Muslim Quarter and Great Mosque
Xi'an's ancient city wall at dusk, rows of red lanterns along the Ming-dynasty brick rampart
🚲 Morning — cycle the city wall
Start the morning on the Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙) — the most complete Ming-dynasty wall in China, 13.7 km around the old town. The ticket is ¥54 (~฿270); climb up at the South Gate (Yongningmen / 永宁门) and rent a bike to ride the loop (about ¥45 / 3 hours). The morning air is cool and you see the old city inside and the new city outside at once. A full lap takes around 1.5–2 hours. Read the City Wall guide for gates and bike-rental points.

☀️ Afternoon — Bell Tower, Drum Tower and the Great Mosque
Head to the heart of the city for the Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower (鼓楼) — a matched Ming-dynasty pair at the centre; a combined ticket is ¥50 and you can climb up for a view over the central crossroads. See the Bell & Drum Tower guide. From the Drum Tower you walk straight into the Muslim Quarter (回民街), and deeper into the lanes you'll reach the Great Mosque of Xi'an (清真大寺), ¥25 — an old mosque laid out like a Chinese garden with Islamic detail, calm and shaded in the middle of the busiest district. Read the Great Mosque guide.

🌙 Evening — eat your way through the Muslim Quarter
Give the evening to eating in the Muslim Quarter — red lanterns glowing, smoke off the grills, the rhythmic thud of roujiamo (肉夹馍), the "Chinese burger" of stewed meat in a crisp bun, skewers of grilled lamb heavy with cumin, biangbiang noodles (biangbiang面) as wide as a belt, and fried persimmon cakes for something sweet. Grazing slowly is the way to do it. Read the Muslim Quarter street-food guide and the full Xi'an food guide to know what to seek out.
Tip: the Muslim Quarter is more than the one busy main street. Wander into Beiyuanmen and the side lanes for the places locals actually eat — cheaper and better. See roujiamo and biangbiang noodles for the standout stalls.

Day 3
Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum and Datang by night
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a Tang-dynasty brick pagoda in Xi'an surrounded by temple halls and gardens
🌅 Morning — Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Start at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) — a Tang-dynasty brick pagoda over 1,300 years old, where the monk Xuanzang stored the scriptures he brought back from India. Entry to Da Ci'en Temple is ¥50 (~฿250), with another ¥30 to climb the pagoda, open 09:00–17:00. Read the Big Wild Goose Pagoda guide. The square in front holds the largest musical fountain in Asia, with shows at 12:00 / 16:00 / 19:00 / 21:00.

🏛️ Afternoon — Shaanxi History Museum
In the afternoon, the Shaanxi History Museum (陕西历史博物馆) — one of the finest museums in China, telling the story of civilisation from prehistory to the Tang, with national-treasure collections. Entry is free but you must reserve ahead via ticket.sxhm.com or WeChat (capped at about 6,000 a day, fills fast). Hours are 08:30–19:00 (last entry 18:00), closed Mondays. Read the Shaanxi History Museum guide for how to book and what to look for.

🌙 Evening — Datang after dark
Save the night for Datang Everbright City (大唐不夜城) — a Tang-style pedestrian street over 1.5 km long, lit up all night. From 18:30 live Tang-dynasty performances spill along the street, all free to watch, with golden statues aglow and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda as a backdrop. Read the Datang guide. It's the evening that makes you feel you've stepped back into Chang'an a thousand years ago.
Tip: if you can't get a museum reservation (they fill fast), one fallback is a paid ticket to the Tang mural exhibition housed in the same building, which is easier to book — or simply swap the museum to the morning and the pagoda to the afternoon. See options in the Xi'an attractions overview.
4
Day 4 — Day trip
Mount Hua (华山) — a sacred peak, 30 minutes away by high-speed rail
Mount Hua near Xi'an, steep granite peaks and cliffside paths, one of China's Five Sacred Mountains
🚄 Morning — train and up the mountain
Head out early from Xi'an North (西安北) on a high-speed train to Huashan North (华山北) — just 30 minutes, with a second-class seat around ~¥54.5 (~฿275) each way and 50-plus trains a day. From the station a free shuttle (launched Jan 2026, every 20 minutes, 08:00–18:00) runs to the Tourist Center. Mountain entry is ~¥160 in peak season; the North Peak cable car is ¥80 one way / ¥150 return (plus a ¥20 shuttle up to the cable-car base). Read the full Mount Hua guide for choosing peaks and routes.

⛰️ Midday — pick a peak and a path
Mount Hua has five peaks. The North Peak is the easiest to reach by cable car and best if your time is tight, while the West Peak has grander views but a pricier cable car (¥140 one way / ¥280 return). Ridge paths link the peaks if you have the legs and the hours. The famous cliffside plank walk is on the South Peak — genuinely hair-raising, with a safety harness and an extra fee. If heights aren't your thing, skip it; just standing on a peak with the view is worth the ticket.

🚄 Evening — back to Xi'an
Come down in the late afternoon, take the shuttle back to Huashan North, and catch a train back to Xi'an North — they run frequently into the evening, though booking your return ahead is reassuring. Back in town, find a warm meal: it's been a long day on your feet, so rest well before the final day.
Safety tip: Mount Hua is high and the weather turns fast — pack a windbreaker, grippy trainers and enough water. On long holidays cable-car queues can run 1–2 hours, so a weekday is far better. Check the forecast before you go: in heavy rain or thick mist the cliff paths may close, so it's worth checking ahead. Book cable-car tickets in advance on Klook.

Day 5 — choose a far trip
Famen Temple or Hanyangling, plus a last market and meal
Datang Everbright City in Xi'an, a Tang-dynasty-style pedestrian street lit up at night
🛕 Option A — Famen Temple (full day)
Famen Temple (法门寺) sits about 120 km west of the city — a 1,700-year-old royal temple that enshrines a finger-bone relic of the Buddha beneath its pagoda, alongside the vast Namaste Dagoba. The combined ticket is ¥120 (~฿600), covering the museum and the dagoba, open 08:00–18:00. You can reach it by Tourist Bus No.2 from Xi'an Railway Station (¥25, departing 07:00–10:00), or charter a car / join a tour for ease — it's far out and public buses are limited, so allow the whole day.

🏺 Option B — Hanyangling (half day)
For a lighter trip, choose the Hanyangling Mausoleum (汉阳陵) — the tomb of Han Emperor Jing, about 20 km north of the centre (near the airport). Its highlight is an underground museum where you walk on glass floors above the real excavation pits, eye to eye with thousands of miniature clay figures. The ticket is ~¥70 (Mar–Nov), open 08:30–18:30 (last entry 17:00). Take Metro Line 2 to Honghui Hospital North, then a taxi (~¥20), or Tourist Bus No.4. See more in the Xi'an day trips guide.

🍜 Evening — markets and a last meal
Back in the city by late afternoon, make the last meal count — if you didn't finish everything in the Muslim Quarter, go back and tick off the rest, or if you'd rather slow down, find a café in the old town or the Datang district and watch the world go by. See the Xi'an café guide. Before you leave, shop the markets for souvenirs — dried persimmons, jujubes, and the spices of the Muslim Quarter are favourites to take home.
How to choose: if you're drawn to Buddhist history and don't mind a longer ride, Famen Temple is well worth it. But if you're tired from Mount Hua and want an easy day, half a day at Hanyangling plus a market wander fits better. Both are experiences most visitors skip — which is exactly what makes your 5-day trip go deeper than the usual route.
Plan before you go

Where to stay, how to get around

🏨
Where to stay for these 5 days
For this plan, base yourself in the Bell Tower (钟楼) or Muslim Quarter inside the city wall — Day 2 is all central and walkable, while Day 1 / Day 4 / Day 5 head out to the train. Metro Line 2 runs north to Xi'an North (for the Mount Hua train) and you're a few minutes from the South Gate.

The other option is the Datang / Big Wild Goose Pagoda district, which is modern and lively after dark — good if you like a newer-city feel.

Frequently asked

Before your 5 days in Xi'an

Is 5 days enough for Xi'an?
Five days is the sweet spot. You get the Terracotta Army, the walled old city, the Muslim Quarter, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the museum, plus a full day trip to Mount Hua, and you still have a final day for a far-out trip like Famen Temple or Hanyangling. With less time, see the 3-day plan or 4-day plan instead.
Can I reach the Terracotta Army on my own, and how?
It's easy on your own. Take tourist bus 游5 (306) from the East Square of Xi'an Railway Station; the fare is ¥7–10 (~฿35–50) and the ride takes 1–1.5 hours. The bus stops at Huaqing Palace first (about 50 minutes), then the Terracotta Army about 10 minutes later, so you can pair both in one day on a single bus. The Terracotta Army ticket is ¥120 (~฿600) and includes the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum park. Read more at the Terracotta Army guide.
How do I get from Xi'an to Mount Hua by train, and what does it cost?
Take a high-speed train from Xi'an North (西安北) to Huashan North (华山北); it takes about 30 minutes and a second-class seat is around ¥54.5 (~฿275) each way, with more than 50 trains a day. From Huashan North a free shuttle (launched January 2026, every 20 minutes) runs to the Tourist Center. Mount Hua entry is about ¥160 in peak season; the North Peak cable car is ¥80 one way / ¥150 return. Read more at the Mount Hua guide.
Do I need to reserve the Shaanxi History Museum in advance?
Yes, definitely. Entry is free but capped at about 6,000 visitors a day, so you must book ahead through the official site ticket.sxhm.com or the museum's WeChat account; slots open a few days before and fill fast, especially on holidays. Hours are 08:30–19:00 (last entry 18:00) and it's closed on Mondays. Bring your passport to collect the ticket. See the Shaanxi History Museum guide.
Which area should I stay in for this 5-day plan?
The Bell Tower (钟楼) and Muslim Quarter are the best base — central, inside the wall, and walkable to the Drum Tower, Great Mosque and the food. Metro Line 2 runs north to Xi'an North for the Mount Hua train and south to the South Gate (Yongningmen) in minutes. A modern alternative is the Datang / Big Wild Goose Pagoda district, lively at night. See options by district in the Xi'an city guide.
What VPN and apps should I set up before Xi'an?
If you want Google Maps, Instagram or Facebook in China, install a VPN before you leave home — you can't download one inside the country. In the city, Amap (高德地图) is more accurate than Google; for intercity trains use the 12306 app (it has English); and link Alipay or WeChat Pay to pay everywhere and scan into the Metro. Read more at the China travel guide.
