Why China in 2026

China used to feel complicated — not anymore

Visa paperwork, blocked apps, cash-only payments — that was the old China. In 2026, Thais get 30 days visa-free at the border. Link your Visa card to Alipay in minutes and pay everywhere your phone goes. Buy a foreign eSIM before you fly and LINE, Google and Facebook work the moment you land. And the world's longest high-speed rail network drops you in the next city before you've finished your tea. Honestly, there's never been a better time to go.

About — Travelling China in 2026

China has become one of the most rewarding destinations in Asia for Thai travellers — and 2026 is the easiest year to go. 30-day visa-free entry has been permanent since 1 March 2024, removing the single biggest barrier. Direct flights from Bangkok connect to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and more in three to five hours.

The Great Firewall is a non-issue with a foreign eSIM — data routes through servers in Hong Kong or Japan, so LINE, Google Maps and Instagram all work without a VPN. Cashless payments via Alipay (linked to your Visa or Mastercard) mean you can eat, shop and ride the subway without hunting for an ATM. And the world's longest high-speed rail network makes city-hopping cheaper and faster than flying domestically.

From the karst peaks of Guilin and the dumplings of Shanghai, to the panda sanctuaries of Chengdu and the terracotta warriors of Xi'an, China offers more variety per trip than almost anywhere else on the planet. Start with the first-timer guide →

STAGE 3 · ANSWERS
Questions we get asked most

Quick answers — before you plan

🛂 Do Thai nationals need a visa to visit China?
No. Thais holding an ordinary passport can enter China visa-free — in effect since 1 March 2024, permanent. Stays of up to 30 days per visit are permitted (no more than 90 days in any 180-day period). No advance application needed. Your passport should have at least 6 months validity. Bring a return ticket and hotel confirmation to show at immigration. · Full visa-free guide with all conditions →
🌐 How do I use the internet in China? Do Google and LINE work?
Google, Facebook, LINE, Instagram and YouTube are all blocked in China by the Great Firewall. The simplest solution is a foreign eSIM (e.g. Airalo) — your data routes through servers outside China (Hong Kong, Japan or Singapore) so all apps work without any VPN configuration. Critically: buy and install the eSIM before you land in China, because VPN provider websites are themselves blocked inside the country. · Full eSIM and firewall guide →
💳 How do I pay for things in China? Do credit cards work?
China is near-cashless. Most restaurants, shops and transport accept only Alipay or WeChat Pay — some places won't take cash at all. Foreign visitors can link a Visa, Mastercard or JCB card directly to Alipay without a Chinese bank account. Set it up before you leave home. Carry a small amount of cash RMB as backup for emergencies. · Full Alipay for foreigners guide →
📅 When is the best time to visit China?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best seasons nationally — mild temperatures, less rain and clear visibility. Avoid Golden Week (October 1–7) and Chinese New Year (January/February) — domestic travel peaks, prices surge and tickets sell out weeks in advance. Note: regions vary significantly. Guilin and Chengdu are pleasant year-round; Beijing gets bitterly cold in winter; Harbin in January is spectacular for the ice festival. · Region-by-region timing guide →
🚄 How do I book high-speed train tickets in China?
Trip.com is the most foreign-traveller-friendly option — English interface, accepts foreign credit/debit cards and PayPal, only requires your passport number (no advance registration or identity verification). Tickets typically go on sale around 15 days before departure. For major stations, arrive 30–45 minutes early to clear security and the internal passport check. · Complete China HSR guide →
🛡️ Is China safe for tourists?
China has a low rate of violent crime against tourists. Major cities have extensive CCTV coverage and public transport is reliable and safe. The main risks are pickpockets in crowded tourist spots and inflated pricing in tourist-facing markets. Follow local laws, avoid discussing sensitive political topics, and you'll have a straightforward, enjoyable trip.
