A Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise, the Li River drifting past karst peaks to Yangshuo, a slow day cycling the countryside with a cooking class, and an overnight on the Longji rice terraces to wait for sunrise — this is the five-day plan for travellers who don't want to hurry.
Here's the honest truth: Guilin is a place you cannot rush. The image of karst peaks reflected in still water — the one printed on the 20-yuan note — does not look its best when you race past it. It looks its best when you're drifting on a bamboo raft, when you're cycling through the rice fields in the late afternoon, or when you wake up and sip tea while the mist lifts off the ridges. The region is really three different worlds: Guilin city, with its Elephant Trunk Hill and lake pagodas lit up at night; the slow, green Yangshuo countryside; and the Longji rice terraces high in the mountains, where the Yao and Zhuang have farmed the slopes for centuries.
This plan is built to feel different from a 3- or 4-day trip — it adds a full slow day in the Yangshuo countryside (a raft, cycling, Moon Hill and a local cooking class) and an overnight on the Longji terraces to catch sunrise over the stepped fields, the one thing a day-tripper never sees. If you have less time, look at our 4-day plan or 3-day plan, which keep things tighter.
Before you book, read our 10 best Guilin hotels to choose where to sleep — this plan splits your nights across three bases: two nights central in Guilin, two nights in Yangshuo, and a final night up on the Longji terraces, so each world gets proper time without backtracking.
The figures below are per person, per day, excluding flights and travel insurance. Accommodation assumes a mid-range hotel or guesthouse (¥300–650 per room per night); sharing a room between two cuts it sharply. The Li River cruise and the Liu Sanjie show make Day 2 the priciest, while the Longji day's main costs are the bus and the scenic-area ticket.
