Guangzhou Without the Rush —
5 Days, the City, the Food and Two Day Trips

The Canton Tower lit up over the Pearl River, the colonial lanes of Shamian Island, Ip Man's hometown in Foshan, and the UNESCO watchtowers of Kaiping — this plan misses nothing.

Why 5 days?

Guangzhou shows you more the longer you stay

Most people who do Guangzhou in 3 days only scratch the surface. The city has layers. The first is the modern one — the Tianhe CBD and the Canton Tower glowing over the river. The second is old Guangzhou: colonial Shamian Island, dim sum in century-old teahouses, and the Chen Clan Academy with the finest folk carving in Guangdong. And the third sits outside the city entirely — Foshan, where Ip Man grew up; Shenzhen, half an hour away by train; and the UNESCO watchtowers of Kaiping that most visitors never even hear about.

This plan is built to feel different from a 3- or 4-day trip — it includes two distinct day trips, not just more of the same. Day 3 is Foshan or the Chimelong theme park; Day 4 is the UNESCO Kaiping watchtowers or a Shenzhen sprint; and the final day climbs Baiyun Mountain for fresh air before a long, proper yum cha. If you have less time, see our 3-day plan or 4-day plan instead.

Before you book, read the where to stay guide — choosing between modern Tianhe, the central old town around Beijing Road, or leafy Shamian Island shapes how convenient each day of this plan feels.

5 Days · 4 Nights Two Day Trips UNESCO Kaiping Watchtowers Budget ¥1,600–3,000/person
1
Day 1
Zhujiang New Town, Canton Tower and a Pearl River Night Cruise
The Canton Tower in Guangzhou, lit up over the Pearl River at night — a 600-metre tower with a slim twisting waist
🌅 Morning
Start in the heart of the new city — Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城), Guangzhou's modern CBD. Stand in the middle of Huacheng Square (花城广场) and look around: skyscrapers on one side, the striking forms of the Guangzhou Library and the Guangdong Museum on the other, and a long green axis running all the way to the river, with the Canton Tower across the water. Take Metro Line 3 / the APM line to Zhujiang New Town Station — the small APM line conveniently links the sights in this district.

☀️ Afternoon
Cross the river to the Canton Tower (广州塔) — the 600-metre, waisted icon of Guangzhou, with 360-degree city views. If you have a head for heights, the very top has the Bubble Tram (glass pods that circle the spire) and photo decks above the clouds. Several ticket tiers cover different observation levels; book ahead to skip queues. Pause for a coffee in the area while you wait for the evening light. Full breakdown of floors and tickets in our Canton Tower guide. Take Metro Line 3 to Canton Tower Station.

🌙 Evening
Close the first day with the thing Guangzhou does best — a Pearl River night cruise (珠江夜游). As the sun sets, the buildings along both banks and the Canton Tower itself begin shifting through colour together. Boats leave from Tianzi Pier and the pier near the Canton Tower, and the loop takes about an hour — it's the best view of the city you'll get all trip. Book tickets ahead via our Pearl River cruise guide. Find dinner along the waterfront before or after.
Tip: The riverside lights and the Canton Tower are at full strength from dusk until about 9 pm. For the best photos, take a sailing that departs around sunset — you'll catch both the last of the daylight and the full nighttime light show.
2
Day 2
Old Guangzhou: Shamian, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Chen Clan Academy and Yuexiu Park
Shamian Island in Guangzhou — European colonial-era buildings and tree-lined streets under big shade trees
🌅 Morning
Begin on Shamian Island (沙面岛) — a small riverside islet that was once a British and French concession, today full of 1800s European buildings, brick-paved streets and huge banyan trees. It's free, and quiet first thing, so it's perfect for an early walk. A short distance away is the Sacred Heart Cathedral (石室圣心大教堂), a Gothic cathedral built entirely of granite — a genuine rarity in China. More detail in our Shamian Island guide and Sacred Heart Cathedral guide. Take Metro Line 1/6 to Huangsha Station.

☀️ Afternoon
Walk over to Shangxiajiu (上下九步行街) — an old pedestrian street lined with traditional Cantonese arcade houses (骑楼), good for snacks and local sweets. Then visit the Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠), a Qing-dynasty clan hall packed with the most intricate wood, stone, brick and rooftop ceramic carving in Guangdong, now a folk-art museum. See the Shangxiajiu guide and Chen Clan Academy guide. Take Metro Line 1 to Chen Clan Academy Station.

🌳 Evening
Finish at Yuexiu Park (越秀公园), the largest park in the city centre and home to the Five Rams statue (五羊石像), the symbol of Guangzhou, plus a surviving stretch of the old city wall. In the early evening, locals come to exercise and dance with fans — a good window into everyday city life. More in our Yuexiu Park guide. For dinner, find a good dim sum or Cantonese spot — see the Guangzhou food guide. Take Metro Line 2 to Yuexiu Park Station.
Tip: Today involves a lot of walking, and every stop sits in old Guangzhou (Liwan/Yuexiu). If you're staying around Beijing Road or Shamian, it's very convenient — everything is within one or two metro stops, with no cross-city dashes.
3
Day 3 — Day Trip
Foshan — Ip Man's Home and the Kung-Fu Lineage (30 minutes by metro)
Detailed rooftop carving and traditional Cantonese folk architecture, in the same Lingnan style found at Foshan's ancestral temple
🥋 All Day — pick option A or B
Day 3 heads out of the city at an easy pace — choose what suits you.

A · Foshan (佛山), for culture and kung fu: Take the Guangfo metro line (广佛线) straight from Guangzhou to Zumiao Station (祖庙), about 30–40 minutes. The main draw is the Foshan Ancestral Temple (祖庙 Zumiao), a nearly thousand-year-old temple complex that includes the Wong Fei-hung Memorial Hall and the Ip Man Hall — Foshan is the hometown of grandmasters Ip Man and Wong Fei-hung. There are kung-fu and lion-dance shows three times a day (10:00 / 14:15 / 15:30, weather permitting). Temple entry is ¥20 (~US$3), open 08:30–18:00. Afterward, stroll Lingnan Tiandi (岭南天地), a beautifully restored old quarter of green-brick lanes and stylish shops.

B · Chimelong (长隆), for families with kids: If you're travelling with children, the Chimelong Safari Park (长隆野生动物世界) is one of the largest wildlife parks in the world, with pandas and a tram-based animal route; the adjoining Chimelong Paradise is a full theme park. Take Metro Line 3 to Hanxi Changlong (汉溪长隆), Exit D, where a free shuttle runs into the park. This easily fills a whole day.
Tip: Foshan needs no advance booking — buy tickets on the day, and it's a single straight metro ride away. Chimelong is worth booking ahead and arriving early to beat the queues. Both are day trips that won't leave you exhausted. More options in our Guangzhou day trips guide.
4
Day 4 — The Big One
UNESCO Kaiping Diaolou Watchtowers, or a Shenzhen Rail Day
Skyscrapers and modern architecture in Guangdong's new city district, standing in for the journey out to neighbouring cities
🏯 Option A — Kaiping Diaolou (early start, full-day trip)
For something genuinely remarkable — the Kaiping Diaolou (开平碉楼), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are fortified watchtower-houses in a fusion of Chinese and European styles, thousands of them scattered across the Kaiping countryside, built by returning overseas Chinese in the early 20th century. The architecture is wonderfully odd — Greek columns, Italianate domes and gun turrets all on one building. The main village is Zili (自力村), with the ornamental Li Garden (立园) nearby.

Worth knowing: Kaiping is about 130 km from Guangzhou — roughly 2.5 hours each way — and the towers are spread across rural areas with no convenient public transport between them. A guided day tour is the easiest way (hotel pickup around 9 am, about ¥180 per person including all the cluster entries), or hire a car with a driver-guide. Plan for an early start and a late return; it's a rewarding day if you love architecture and history.

🚄 Option B — Shenzhen (30 minutes by high-speed rail)
If you'd rather contrast the old city with a brand-new one, take a G high-speed train from Guangzhou South (广州南站) to Shenzhen North (深圳北站) — just 30 minutes, with a 2nd-class ticket at ¥75–83 (~US$10–12) each way, and over 340 trains running daily. If Guangzhou is old Cantonese culture and dim sum, Shenzhen is the young tech city of theme parks and future-facing towers. Go in the morning, back in the evening, easy. See more options in our Guangzhou day trips guide.

Hong Kong is close too — the XRL train from Guangzhou South reaches Hong Kong West Kowloon in about 48 minutes. But Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region with its own immigration and entry rules, so check your visa and passport requirements carefully before planning it.
How to choose: Love history, unusual architecture and don't mind a longer drive → Kaiping. Want an easy, modern city you can reach and leave quickly → Shenzhen. Either choice makes Day 4 clearly distinct from Day 3.

Day 5
Baiyun Mountain, Beijing Road, a Long Yum Cha and Cantonese Sweets
Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou — a green, forested hill with walking paths and views over the city
🌅 Morning — fresh air on the mountain
Begin the last day slowly at Baiyun Mountain (白云山) — the "White Cloud Mountain", Guangzhou's green lung. It's open 06:00–22:00 and entry is just ¥5 (~US$0.70); walk up or take the cable car (¥25 up / ¥20 down). The summit gives a sweeping view over the whole city, and in the morning locals come to exercise and practise tai chi in cool air you won't find down in the streets. More in our Baiyun Mountain guide. Take Metro Line 11 to Yuntai Garden Station.

🛍️ Afternoon — choose your style
Head back into the city and pick what suits you:

If you like the old city: Walk Beijing Road (北京路), a central pedestrian shopping street with glass panels in the pavement revealing the ancient stone road excavated beneath it — good for shopping and snacking for a couple of hours. See the Beijing Road guide.

If you want modern shopping: Head to Taikoo Hui (太古汇) in Tianhe — a high-end mall with international brands, good cafés and quality Cantonese restaurants. Take Metro Line 3 to Shipaiqiao Station.

If you want to eat properly: This is the moment for a long yum cha (饮茶) — the thing Guangzhou is most famous for in the world. Har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, followed by Cantonese sweet soups (糖水 tong sui) like steamed ginger milk, mango sago or a warm tofu pudding.

✈️ Departure
Guangzhou's airport is Baiyun International (CAN 广州白云), about 28 km north of the city. The cheapest and most direct way out is Metro Line 3 (north extension) to Airport North (机场北) or Airport South (机场南), ¥7–10, around 50–70 minutes (it's crowded at peak times — leave a buffer). A taxi or DiDi runs ¥100–150 (~50 minutes). Allow at least 2.5–3 hours before your flight. Full detail in our Guangzhou airport transfer guide.
Last-minute gifts: If you still have shopping to do, the Tianhe district (Taikoo Hui / Grandview Mall) stays open late and has everything in one place — souvenirs, Chinese tea and local snacks — handy before you take Line 3 straight to Baiyun Airport.

Where to Stay and How to Get Around

🏨
Which Neighbourhood for This Plan
Two areas suit this itinerary best — Tianhe / Zhujiang New Town if you like things modern, well-connected and close to the Canton Tower, with a straight Line 3 ride to the airport; or Beijing Road / Yuexiu (old town) if you want to be in the heart of the history, walking distance from Shamian and the best dim sum.

Days 3 and 4 are out-of-city trips departing from the Guangfo line or Guangzhou South, both reachable from either base — so you won't need to change hotels mid-trip.
🚇
Guangzhou Metro — Lines You'll Actually Use
Guangzhou's metro is one of the busiest systems in the world and covers every stop in this itinerary. Fares ¥2–14 per trip. Key lines:

Line 3 / APM — Zhujiang New Town · Canton Tower · airport · Hanxi Changlong
Lines 1/6 — Huangsha (Shamian) · Chen Clan Academy · Beijing Road
Line 2 — Yuexiu Park · Guangzhou South (HSR for Shenzhen)
Line 11 · Guangfo — Baiyun Mountain · Foshan
Payment: Scan Alipay/WeChat Pay at the gate, or buy a Yang Cheng Tong (羊城通) card Navigation: Amap (高德地图) is far more accurate in Mainland China than Google Maps

Frequently Asked Questions

Before Your 5-Day Guangzhou Trip

Is 5 days enough for Guangzhou?
Five days is genuinely comfortable — you can cover the modern city and Canton Tower, the old town around Shamian Island, a long proper yum cha, and two different day trips (Foshan or Chimelong, then Kaiping or Shenzhen) without rushing. For a shorter trip, see the 3-day plan or 4-day plan.
What is the best day trip from Guangzhou?
The closest is Foshan — take the Guangfo metro line to Zumiao Station (30–40 minutes) for the ancestral temple and the kung-fu legacy of Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man. For something more remarkable, the UNESCO Kaiping Diaolou watchtowers (130 km away, ~2.5 hours, best as a guided tour), or a 30-minute high-speed train to Shenzhen. See all of them in our Guangzhou day trips guide.
How long is the train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen?
Very quick. A G high-speed train from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North takes about 30 minutes. A 2nd-class ticket costs ¥75–83 (~US$10–12) each way. Buy through the 12306 app or at the station counter with your passport — over 340 trains run daily. Full instructions in the China high-speed rail guide.
When is the best time of year to visit Guangzhou?
October to December (late autumn into early winter) is ideal — dry, cool (around 18–26°C) and clear. January–February is mild but sometimes grey. March–May is warm and humid (watch for the wall-sweating humidity locals call 回南天), and June–September is hot and very wet. Avoid the Canton Fair dates (roughly mid-April to early May and mid-October to early November), when hotel prices spike 2–4× and rooms vanish citywide.
Which apps do I need to get around Guangzhou?
For the metro, just scan Alipay or WeChat Pay at the gate, or buy a Yang Cheng Tong (羊城通) card. For intercity trains use the 12306 app (available in English). For maps and finding restaurants, Amap (高德地图) is far more accurate than Google Maps in Mainland China, where Google Maps is blocked.
Do I need a VPN in Guangzhou?
If you use Google Maps, Instagram, WhatsApp or similar services, download and test a VPN before leaving home — you cannot install VPN apps inside Mainland China. Amap works without a VPN and is more accurate than Google Maps in China anyway, and WeChat and Alipay work normally. See the China internet and eSIM guide.
