2 Days in Guangzhou —
A weekend that fits just right

Canton Tower changing colour over the river, a Pearl River cruise after dark, a leafy colonial island, a Gothic cathedral built entirely of granite — Guangzhou divides neatly into new and old, and forty-eight hours is exactly enough to do both.

Why plan matters

48 hours in Guangzhou — split the city in two

Guangzhou is a surprisingly easy city to plan over two days, because it divides itself into two clear worlds. The eastern riverbank is modern Guangzhou — skyscrapers, an opera house, Canton Tower. The western side is the old city — colonial lanes, qilou arcades, a granite cathedral. So we give Day 1 to the new city and Day 2 to the old, with no doubling back and no wasted time crossing the river twice.

This plan is built for travellers who are short on time — a quick weekend, a stopover between flights, or a first taste of the city before committing to more. Every stop runs on the metro, one of the largest and busiest networks on earth. What this plan deliberately leaves out: day trips to Shenzhen or Hong Kong and a full day on Baiyun Mountain (each needs a whole day to be worth it). If you want those, see the full list of Guangzhou attractions to build the plan out to three days.

The single most useful decision before you arrive: match your base to your style — pick Zhujiang New Town / Tianhe for modern convenience, or Beijing Road / Yuexiu to be central and closer to Day 2's sights. See the top 10 Guangzhou hotels for options at every budget.

Day One

Modern Guangzhou — Canton Tower & the River

A proper Cantonese yum cha breakfast, Huacheng Square and the Opera House, the view from Canton Tower, and a Pearl River cruise to close the evening — the best night view in the city.

01
Day 1
Zhujiang New Town · Canton Tower · Pearl River Cruise
Canton Tower Guangzhou — the slender twisting observation tower rising over the Pearl River by day
Morning · 08:30–12:30 · ~4 hours
Yum cha breakfast + Huacheng Square (花城广场)

Start the day the Cantonese way. Guangzhou is the home of yum cha (饮茶) — the morning ritual of drinking tea and eating dim sum. Find a dim sum house near your hotel and order har gow shrimp dumplings, siu mai, char siu bao, soy-braised chicken feet, and a pot of oolong to wash it down. This meal is the heart of Guangzhou and not one to skip. For what to order, see the dim sum and yum cha guide.

Then take the metro to Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城), the city's modern CBD, and walk Huacheng Square (Flower City Square) — a long green plaza in the middle of the skyscraper cluster, framed by the Guangzhou Opera House, Zaha Hadid's design of two smooth boulders, and the strikingly modern Guangzhou Library. The whole district photographs beautifully and costs nothing to wander.

Metro: Line 3 or 5 to Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) · or the APM line to Huacheng Square
Huacheng Square / Opera House: Free to walk the district · Opera House interior tours ticketed separately
Yum cha breakfast: ¥60–120 per person · Popular houses queue on weekend mornings — go before 11 am
Afternoon · 13:30–17:30 · ~4 hours
Lunch → Canton Tower (广州塔) observation deck

After lunch, cross the river south to Canton Tower, the symbol of Guangzhou. At 600 metres, its twisting, narrow-waisted silhouette has earned it the local nickname "Slim Waist (小蛮腰)". Pick one observation level: the indoor glass decks at 428–433 metres (the Cloud Deck and Star Deck) or the open-air deck at 488 metres, higher up with a full 360-degree view. In the afternoon light you can trace Zhujiang New Town and the long curve of the Pearl River across the whole city. Allow 1.5–2 hours.

The rooftop has two rides you will not find anywhere else — the Bubble Tram, rotating glass cabins that ride the rim of the rooftop, and Sky Drop, the world's tallest vertical free-fall ride at 480 metres. Both are ticketed separately from the observation entry. See the Canton Tower guide for full details and current prices.

Metro: Line 3 or the APM line to Canton Tower (广州塔) — 5-minute walk
Observation ticket: ¥150–228 (~฿750–1,140) depending on level · Open 09:30–22:30 (check-in by 22:00)
Bubble Tram / Sky Drop: Ticketed separately · Book online to avoid queuing
Go up by day or by night? If you can only go up once, aim for the hour before sunset (around 17:00–18:30) — you catch the daytime view and watch the city lights come on in a single visit. But if you have the river cruise planned for tonight, going up Canton Tower in the afternoon and saving the night lights for the boat works just as well.
Evening · 18:30–21:30 · ~3 hours

This is the highlight of Day 1 — the Pearl River night cruise. After dark, the riverbank towers are fully lit, Canton Tower cycles through its colours, the bridges glow, and you watch all of it drift past from the cool of the river. The cruise runs about 60–70 minutes. The main pier is Tianzi Wharf (天字码头) on Beijing South Road, near Haizhu Square station. Departures after 19:30 catch the best light. Book in advance on Klook.

Dinner is easy before or after the cruise: try one of Guangzhou's signatures — roast duck, crispy pork belly, char siu, or Hainan-style steamed chicken over oily rice, Cantonese-style. The Beijing Road area and the riverside have restaurants at every price point, ¥80–250 per person. See the Cantonese roast meats guide.

Cruise: ¥70–100 (~฿350–500) · Departures 18:40–21:40 · After 19:30 recommended · Book Klook in advance
Pier: Tianzi Wharf · Metro Line 2 or 6 to Haizhu Square
Dinner: ¥80–250/person · Beijing Road area / riverside
Day Two

Old Guangzhou & Heritage — Shamian Island & Chen Clan Academy

A leafy colonial island, a cathedral built entirely of granite, the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street and its qilou arcades, and the masterwork of Cantonese craftsmen at Chen Clan Academy.

02
Day 2
Shamian Island · Sacred Heart Cathedral · Shangxiajiu · Chen Clan Academy
Shamian Island Guangzhou — pastel European colonial buildings along a tree-lined street
Morning · 08:30–11:30 · ~3 hours

Begin Day 2 on Shamian Island — a small sandbank island in the Pearl River that served as the British and French concession in the 19th century. Today it is the quietest, leafiest corner of the city: pastel European colonial buildings, broad tree-lined avenues, riverside cafés, and almost no traffic. It is free to wander, and 60–90 minutes is enough to enjoy it.

From Shamian, take the metro to the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Yide Road — a Gothic Revival cathedral built entirely of granite, one of only four all-stone Gothic churches in the world. Locals call it the "Stone House (石室)". Completed in 1888, its twin spires rise 58 metres. Entry is free, but the hours open to the public are limited (it usually closes on Mondays, and weekday hours are split) — check before you go to be sure.

Metro (Shamian): Line 1 or 6 to Huangsha (黄沙) · walk across the footbridge onto the island
Metro (Cathedral): Line 2 or 6 to Haizhu Square (海珠广场), Exit B2, then walk along Yide Road
Admission: Shamian Island and the cathedral are both free · Cathedral closed Mondays — check hours first
Midday–afternoon · 11:30–16:30 · ~5 hours

From Shamian, walk about 15 minutes north (or return to Huangsha station) to the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street in Liwan district — a historic shopping street lined with qilou (骑楼) arcades, a distinctive Cantonese architecture. The qilou have carved balconies and coloured stained glass on their upper floors, with covered walkways arcading over the footpath below — a mix of traditional Chinese forms and European influence. Wander the buildings, sample local snacks, and find lunch.

Lunch here is Cantonese at its most authentic — beef brisket noodles, fish congee, Cantonese rice porridge, or wonton shrimp noodles. Try one of the old shops in Liwan where the locals queue. See the congee and noodles guide or the full Guangzhou food guide.

Close the afternoon at Chen Clan Academy (Chen Clan Ancestral Hall) — an ancestral temple of the Chen family built in 1894, now the Guangdong Folk Art Museum. This is the finest Cantonese craftsmanship gathered in one place: wood, stone and brick carving, plaster moulding, ceramic figures along the roof ridges, and ironwork, all so detailed you will want to slow right down. Entry is just ¥10 (~฿50), the best value in the city. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Metro (Shangxiajiu): Line 1 or 6 to Huangsha (黄沙) — 8-minute walk
Metro (Chen Clan Academy): Line 1 to Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠), Exit D
Chen Clan Academy: ¥10 (~฿50) · Open 08:30–17:30 (until 18:00, 15 Apr–15 Oct)
Shangxiajiu: Pedestrian street, free · Shops open roughly 10:00–22:00
If you have spare afternoon time: from Chen Clan Academy, Line 1 carries you a few stops to Beijing Road (北京路) — a central pedestrian shopping street with a stretch of excavated Southern Song-dynasty road preserved under glass in the middle of the walkway. An easy place to shop and snack to end the day.
Evening · 17:00–20:00 · ~3 hours
Farewell night view + dinner

End the trip with a last image of Guangzhou. If you did not go up Canton Tower at night on Day 1, this evening is the time — the city lights from the rooftop are worth it. Or, for something gentler, walk the Pearl River promenade at Zhujiang New Town, directly across from the tower, and watch the lit-up skyline reflect off the water for free. The atmosphere is every bit as good as the view from the deck.

For your last dinner, go back to one more proper Cantonese meal before you leave. Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town have mid-range to upmarket restaurants to choose from, ¥100–300 per person. If you prefer to graze on street food instead, see the Guangzhou street food guide.

Free night view: Pearl River promenade at Zhujiang New Town, across from Canton Tower
Dinner: ¥100–300/person · Tianhe / Zhujiang New Town
Metro home: Main lines run until roughly 23:00–23:30

Where to Stay · Getting Around · Budget

🏨
Where to Stay for 1 Night

Two good bases — Zhujiang New Town / Tianhe, the modern CBD across from Canton Tower, on Metro Line 3 / APM with Taikoo Hui malls at your door, ideal for first-timers who want convenience; or Beijing Road / Yuexiu, the old downtown, central and closer to Day 2's sights. Mid-range hotels run ¥350–600 per night. See the top 10 hotels or the 6 luxury hotels.

🚇
Getting Around

The metro covers every stop in this plan — Line 3 and the APM for Zhujiang New Town / Canton Tower, Line 1 for Shamian / Shangxiajiu / Chen Clan Academy, Line 2 for the cathedral. Fares ¥2–14 per trip, paid by scanning Alipay or WeChat Pay, or buy a Yang Cheng Tong card. Line 3 gets very crowded at peak — allow extra time. All station signs are bilingual.

💳
Paying for Things

Set up Alipay (international version, linked to a foreign Visa or Mastercard) before you leave home. Most shops accept Alipay or WeChat Pay only — some do not take cash at all. See the Alipay & WeChat Pay setup guide and the visa-free entry guide.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ · 2-Day Guangzhou Itinerary

Is 2 days enough for Guangzhou?
Two days comfortably covers Canton Tower, a Pearl River night cruise, Shamian Island, the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Shangxiajiu and Chen Clan Academy — and Guangzhou splits cleanly into two zones, which makes the 48 hours easy. Day 1 is the modern riverside east (Tianhe / Zhujiang New Town); Day 2 is the historic west (Liwan / Yuexiu). What you have to leave out is a day trip to Shenzhen or Hong Kong and a full day on Baiyun Mountain. If you want those, extend to three days.
Can you do 2 days in Guangzhou with kids?
Yes, and fairly comfortably. On Day 1, children love Canton Tower — especially the Bubble Tram, the rotating glass cabins that ride the rim of the rooftop, and the rides up top. The Pearl River night cruise keeps younger ones happily watching the lit-up riverbanks. On Day 2, Shamian Island is easy, leafy walking with plenty of open space. Guangzhou Metro has lifts at every station, so prams go up and down without trouble. Just slow the pace a little on Day 2 if the kids tire from all the walking.
Where should I stay for a 2-day Guangzhou weekend?
There are two bases that suit this itinerary. Zhujiang New Town / Tianhe (珠江新城/天河) is the modern CBD, directly across the river from Canton Tower, with Metro Line 3 and the APM reaching every stop and Taikoo Hui malls at your door — the smoothest base for a first-time visitor. Beijing Road / Yuexiu (北京路/越秀) is the old downtown, a pedestrian shopping street that sits centrally and is closer to Day 2's sights. Mid-range 3-star and 4-star hotels run ¥350–600 per night. See the top 10 Guangzhou hotels for all the options.
Where does the Pearl River cruise depart from, and how do I book?
The main pier is Tianzi Wharf (天字码头) on Beijing South Road, near Haizhu Square metro station (Lines 2 and 6). Cruises depart roughly between 18:40 and 21:40 and last about 60–70 minutes. Tickets start at ¥70–100 (~฿350–500) depending on the boat and seating class. The early-evening departures after dark give you the best view, because all the riverbank towers are lit up. Book in advance through the Pearl River cruise guide or Klook to get a good price and skip the ticket queue at the wharf.
What is a realistic budget for 2 days in Guangzhou?
A mid-range budget runs roughly ¥650–950 per person per day (~$90–130 USD), covering a 3-star or 4-star hotel at ¥350–600 per night, three meals at ¥120–220, metro fares at ¥20–30 and admission tickets — Canton Tower ¥150–228, a river cruise ¥70–100, Chen Clan Academy ¥10. Guangzhou's big advantage is that much of the old-city sightseeing is free — Shamian Island, the Sacred Heart Cathedral and Shangxiajiu cost nothing to enter. Budget travellers using hostels and local yum cha houses can get by on ¥350–450 per day.
