Zhangjiajie has no metro, and its sights split across two zones — the Avatar-pillar park is at Wulingyuan, while the Tianmen cable car, the airport and the high-speed rail are in the city, about an hour apart. Here is who each zone suits, how much road time it costs, and which hotel to pick.
Picture this: you book a great-value hotel, then find you're in the wrong zone — every morning into the park to see the Avatar pillars means an hour on the road, or you book right by the park and then have to drag your bags out at dawn on your flight day. Zhangjiajie isn't like Shanghai or Beijing: it has no metro at all, so getting around runs on buses, taxis and DiDi. And the things people come here to see split cleanly into two zones — the Avatar-pillar park is at Wulingyuan, while the Tianmen Mountain cable car, the airport and the high-speed rail stations are in Zhangjiajie city. The two are about 33 km apart, roughly an hour by road.
That is why choosing your zone here matters more than you'd think — it's not just "near or far," it's "which zone am I exploring today." We split the trip into two main zones, each with its own character, price level and pace. Work out which day goes where, pick the right base, and the whole thing runs smoother. The good news is that most people don't choose one or the other — they stay in both zones on a single trip.

For most first-time visitors, the plan that works best is to start in Wulingyuan (武陵源) for two nights — a small town right by the gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Get to the gate early before the big tour groups and you'll find the thousand sandstone pillars that inspired the Avatar peaks, Golden Whip Stream, Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie and the Bailong Elevator all in one zone. Then move to Zhangjiajie city for one more night on the way out, to ride the Tianmen Mountain cable car up to Heaven's Gate and walk the glass cliff path, before you fly or take the train home. The cable car, the airport and the rail stations are all on the city side, so the timing just works — you get a full park experience and the city's convenience in one trip.
Wulingyuan pick: Manyuan Resort Hotel (mountain-view resort by the park) — scored 9.6/10 — and for the city night, try Wyndham Garden Tianmen Mountain, scored 9.6/10, near the cable car, or see every option in Top 10 Zhangjiajie Hotels.

Suits: everyone here mainly for the Avatar pillars and the park — Wulingyuan is a small town right by the gate of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Get to the gate early before the big tour groups and you'll find Golden Whip Stream, Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie and the Bailong Elevator all in one zone. There's a small eating-and-drinking street in town for the evening, and the mood is a quiet mountain town. This is the base to stay longest — two nights to do the park properly.
Zone 2
Suits: arrival or departure nights plus your Tianmen Mountain day — Zhangjiajie city (Yongding District) is the side with the Tianmen Mountain cable car right in town (about a 10-minute walk from the central bus station), Hehua Airport (DYG) only ~5 km away, and the high-speed rail stations. It suits the night you fly in or before you leave, and the day you ride up Tianmen Mountain to Heaven's Gate and walk the glass cliff path. The city has more spicy Hunan restaurants and food choices than Wulingyuan. Best for one night to bookend the trip.
On a tight budget, both zones have value picks — the city has hostels and midscale rooms starting cheap, such as Cloud Youth Hostel by the Tianmen cable car (around ¥80+/night · ฿400+), while value 4-stars on the Wulingyuan side such as Hilton Garden Inn Wulingyuan and Hampton by Hilton National Forest Park put you a walk from the park gate. See every option in Top 10 Zhangjiajie Hotels.
For five-star rooms with knockout views, check Top 6 Luxury Hotels in Zhangjiajie — from Pullman and Manyuan Resort on the park side, to Wyndham Garden on the Tianmen Mountain side, with five-star rates around ¥600–1,400+ (฿3,000–7,000+) a night — better value than the big cities.
Zhangjiajie is in Hunan, where the flavours run hot and bold — the local star is sanxiaguo (三下锅), a spicy braised hot pot that locals actually eat, while Tujia cuisine is the home cooking of the area's ethnic group. For the full picture of every dish, read the full Zhangjiajie food guide. The city has more restaurants, while Wulingyuan has a small snack street near the hotels — see more in Zhangjiajie street food.
