How Much Does a
Chiang Rai Trip Cost?

Real 2026 price ranges across every category — from a ฿250-a-night hostel to a Kok River resort at ฿3,000+, a ฿60 bowl of khao soi to a northern feast, the free Blue Temple to a temple-circuit tour. Three worked daily budgets, full 2-day and 3-day cost examples, and the tips that actually cut spend in Thailand's far-northern city of temples, tea hills and the Golden Triangle.

Before you plan

Is Chiang Rai expensive — the honest answer

Picture a steaming ฿60 bowl of khao soi (northern curry noodles) in a small shop downtown, then a short 15-kilometre drive out to stand in front of the all-white Wat Rong Khun, a temple that looks like it stepped out of a dream. That's Chiang Rai — Thailand's far-northern city, where contemporary-art temples, tea hills and the Mekong views of the Golden Triangle all fit into one trip. The question everyone asks first is "will it be expensive?" The honest answer is it's good value — clearly cheaper than Bangkok, and a real step below the southern islands like Phuket or Samui.

There are three reasons Chiang Rai stretches your money so far. One, several beautiful temples are free or nearly free — Wat Rong Suea Ten (the Blue Temple) is free or by donation, as are Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Huay Pla Kang, and the lit Clock Tower at night costs nothing; Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) is about ฿100 for foreigners. Two, the food is cheap and excellent — khao soi, nam ngiao and sai ua run around ฿40–80 a plate or bowl, a casual local meal ฿60–120. Three, getting around town is cheap — it's a small, walkable city, songthaews cost a few baht a ride, and Grab in town starts around ฿40–80.

The biggest variable is accommodation and getting out to the far-flung sights. A central hostel starts around ฿250–450 a night, a good-value 3-star sits around ฿800–1,500, and a smart Kok River or hillside resort can climb to ฿3,000–6,000 and beyond. Because the headline sights — the Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen, Doi Tung and Doi Mae Salong — sit 60 km or more from town, a car with driver, a car hire or a day tour is the big-ticket item that makes a Chiang Rai budget different from a city you can see on foot. Every price on this page is gathered from typical current rates (2026) and given as a planning range, not a fixed quote — figures shift with the season and how far ahead you book, and room rates jump over New Year and the cool-season peak (Nov–Jan).

Note: Prices on this page are general reference ranges gathered from current data. Actual costs vary with season, how far ahead you book, and market changes. All figures are in Thai baht (฿) and approximate — check the latest prices before you go.
🌫️ Something to flag first — the burning season: from roughly mid-Feb to April (March is worst), agricultural and forest burning across the north pushes PM2.5 up sharply (Chiang Rai's March averages have topped 100 µg/m³, with AQI often above 150), the sky turns hazy, mountain views disappear, and it can hit ~40°C. If you're sensitive to dust or travelling with kids or older relatives, avoid this window. The best months are Nov–Feb — cool, clear and the cleanest air. 🏨
Cost per night

Type Per night Best for Notes
Hostel (dorm bed) ~฿250–450 backpackers / solo Shared dorm, central — near the Clock Tower / Night Bazaar
Guesthouse / budget hotel ~฿500–900 couples / tight budget Simple private room around the Clock Tower / near the bus station
Mid-range hotel (3★) ~฿900–1,800 general travellers Clean room, pool, some with breakfast, central
Upper-tier hotel / resort (4★) ~฿1,800–3,500 families / honeymoon In-town or Kok River resort with full facilities
Luxury resort / hillside boutique ~฿3,500–6,000+ special occasions Mountain / tea-country resort or riverside boutique · needs a car
Tip: The best first-timer base is the city centre — around the Clock Tower and the Night Bazaar, an easy walk to restaurants, the night market and transport, with quick songthaew or Grab rides to Wat Rong Khun and the Blue Temple. If you want quieter views, look along the Kok River (calmer, with resorts), and if tea hills are your priority, a countryside or hillside stay works well but needs a car. If you arrive by overnight coach, a stay near the bus station is cheap and handy. See the full area-by-area picture at where to stay in Chiang Rai.

Khao soi is the great-value meal: egg noodles in a coconut-curry broth, topped with crisp fried noodles, over chicken or beef, at just around ฿50–70 a bowl. It's a local staple eaten morning or midday, with pickled greens, shallots and lime to add as you like, and you can fill up for under 100 baht. Getting around

Tuk-tuk / Grab in town (per ride) ~฿40–120 Always agree a tuk-tuk fare first · Grab works but supply is limited
Scooter hire (per day) ~฿200–350 Handy in town · wear a helmet, carry a licence · the mountain roads are steep
Car hire / car with driver (per day) ~฿1,200–3,000 Best for the temple / Golden Triangle / Doi Tung loop · split among a group
Chiang Rai has no train and no BTS/MRT/metro: Thailand's Northern rail line ends at Chiang Mai, so to come by rail you take the train to Chiang Mai then a bus or van into Chiang Rai. The main ways in are flying into CEI (fastest) or the Green Bus from Chiang Mai (cheap, scenic). Around town you'll use songthaews, tuk-tuks, Grab or a rented scooter, but because the headline sights are spread far out (the Golden Triangle, Doi Tung, Doi Mae Salong and Phu Chi Fa all sit 60 km or more away), plan a car with driver or a tour for the far-out days. See the options compared at getting to Chiang Rai and around town at getting around Chiang Rai.

Money-saving tips — that actually work in Chiang Rai

Budget bottom line: the leanest comfortable budget in Chiang Rai is about ฿800–1,200/day — a city hostel or guesthouse, khao soi and northern food at local shops, a scooter or songthaews, and free temples as your backbone, saving a chunk for one day out to the Golden Triangle or Doi Tung. It's still a joy, because the heart of Chiang Rai — the art temples, the tea hills and the Mekong views — is mostly free to admire without a ticket at every stop.
Money & connectivity

Paying in Chiang Rai — know this before you go

💵
Cash still matters

Markets, songthaews, tuk-tuks, temple entry and many small shops run mostly on cash. Keep small notes on you for rides and street eats. ATMs are everywhere in town, but they can be scarce up in the hills and at far-out sights, so withdraw before you head out of the city.

📲
PromptPay / QR pay

Plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes take QR payment (PromptPay), which is very handy if you have a Thai bank account. Some foreign visitors can use wallet apps that support Thai QR, but still carry backup cash for cash-only spots.

📶
Internet + eSIM

Chiang Rai uses Google Maps, LINE and the usual apps normally (no VPN needed, unlike China). A strong eSIM or data SIM before you arrive makes it easy to call a Grab, book tours and navigate up the hills. Signal is good in town but can be weak on high mountain stretches. See the Thailand eSIM/SIM guide.

Frequently asked

FAQ · Chiang Rai trip budget

How much does a 3-day trip to Chiang Rai cost?
It depends on your accommodation and travel style: backpacker runs about ฿2,300–4,600 for a full 3 days 2 nights, covering a hostel, khao soi and northern food, songthaews/a rented scooter, and temple entry plus one day out to Doi Tung/Chiang Saen · mid-range ฿6,200–12,200, with a 3–4★ hotel, a car hire or shared tour and a Mekong boat · comfort ฿16,000+, with a riverside or hill resort and a private car with guide. These exclude the flight or bus into town, and the biggest single cost is getting out to the far-flung sights. See the detail at a 3-day Chiang Rai itinerary.
Is Chiang Rai expensive for travellers?
It's good value — clearly cheaper than Bangkok and well below the southern islands like Phuket or Samui. A bowl of khao soi is around ฿50–70, northern food at local shops ฿40–80 a plate, and crucially several beautiful temples are free (the Blue Temple, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Huay Pla Kang), while Wat Rong Khun is about ฿100 for foreigners. The main variables are accommodation and getting out to the far sights: hostels start around ฿250–450 a night, a car with driver is ฿1,200–3,000 a day, and a good Kok River or hillside resort runs ฿3,000–6,000 and up.
What daily budget should I set for Chiang Rai?
Per person, per day (accommodation, food, getting around town and entry fees; the flight/bus in excluded): backpacker ~฿800–1,300 — hostel, local eats, songthaew/a rented scooter · mid-range ~฿2,000–3,500 — 3–4★ hotel, a car hire or shared tour · comfort ฿5,000+ — riverside/hill resort, a private car with guide. A day out to the Golden Triangle, Doi Tung or Doi Mae Salong costs more than an ordinary day because you need a hired car or a tour.
How do you get to Chiang Rai — is there a train?
Chiang Rai has no train and no BTS/MRT/metro. Thailand's Northern rail line ends at Chiang Mai, so coming by rail means taking the train to Chiang Mai then a bus or van onward. The main options are flying into Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) from Bangkok in about 1h20 (~฿800–2,500), or the Green Bus from Chiang Mai in about 3 to 3¾ hours (~฿200–360+). Overnight coaches from Bangkok (Mo Chit) take about 11–12 hours. Around town you'll use songthaew, tuk-tuk, Grab or a rented scooter/car. See getting to Chiang Rai and getting around Chiang Rai.
How do you get from Chiang Rai Airport (CEI) into the city, and how much?
Since August 2024 there has been no public airport bus from Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) — a taxi, Grab or private transfer is the only way in. A metered taxi into the city centre is around ฿160–200 and takes about 30 minutes (the airport sits about 8 km out). Grab works but supply is limited, so you may wait at busy times; book a private transfer ahead if you're a group or arriving late, and agree the fare before you set off. See getting to Chiang Rai.
