How Much Does a
Xiamen Trip Cost?

Real 2026 prices across every category — from a ¥90-per-night hostel by the ferry pier to a sea-view Conrad room from ¥800, ¥15–40 satay noodles and oyster omelettes to fresh seafood, free temples and beaches to the ¥35–50 Gulangyu ferry. Three worked daily budgets, a full 3-day cost example, the Gulangyu strategy, and eight ways to save.

The honest answer first

Is Xiamen expensive? Cheaper than you would expect.

Ask travellers heading to Xiamen whether it will be expensive, and the honest answer is reassuring. Xiamen is one of China's most liveable seaside cities, yet food and getting around stay cheap. What keeps a Xiamen budget light is that most of the best things to do are free or inexpensive — Nanputuo Temple is free, walking the campus of Xiamen University (often called the prettiest in China) is free, and Huandao Road along the coast, Zengcuo'an beach village and the old Zhongshan Road shopping street all cost nothing to wander.

The one thing that really pushes a Xiamen day budget up is Gulangyu island — the car-free UNESCO World Heritage islet offshore. On the day you cross over there is a ferry fare of about ¥35–50 (~฿175–250) return, plus entry to the island's gardens and viewpoints. A 5-site combo (Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, Bright Moon Park, the Organ Museum and the Engraving Gallery) is around ¥100 (~฿500), while Hulishan Fortress on the main island is just ¥25 (~฿125). On days you stay on the mainland, your spend is noticeably lighter because nearly everything in the city is free.

The real variable is accommodation. A dorm bed starts at ¥90 (~฿450) a night — somewhere like the Koala International Youth Hostel by the Zhongshan Road ferry pier — while a 5-star room such as a sea-view Conrad near Wuyuan Bay, or a heritage boutique on Gulangyu like Lin's Mansion, runs ¥800–1,400 (~฿4,000–7,000) or more. All prices on this page are compiled from typical current market rates in 2026 and are intended as planning ranges, not guarantees. They shift with season — and especially with Chinese New Year, Golden Week and the summer holidays, when hotel and island guesthouse rates spike. The exchange rate used throughout is ¥1 ≈ ฿5.

A note on these figures: The prices in this guide are indicative ranges drawn from current typical market data. They are not quotes or guarantees, and actual costs vary by season, booking lead time and specific choices — especially during Chinese New Year, Golden Week and the summer holidays, when hotel rates rise and Gulangyu packs out. Ferry fares, entry prices and opening hours are worth checking again before you go, particularly in typhoon season (July–September) when sailings can be suspended. Treat these figures as a realistic planning framework, not a budget contract.

Budget hotel (2–3 star) ¥180–350 ~฿900–1,750 Private room, e.g. Hanting / Jinjiang Inn / 7 Days in Siming district
Mid-range (3–4 star) ¥350–550 ~฿1,750–2,750 e.g. Atour Wuyuan Bay (¥350) · Atour Zengcuo'an (¥400) · Marco Polo (¥400)
Upper-tier (4–5 star) ¥430–600 ~฿2,150–3,000 e.g. Seaview Resort (¥430) · Pan Pacific (¥450) · ICC Hotel (¥500) · Hotel Indigo Harbour (¥550)
Luxury (5 star) / island boutique ¥800–1,400+ ~฿4,000–7,000+ Conrad Xiamen (from ¥800) sea views · Lin's Mansion 林氏府 (¥1,400) heritage villa on Gulangyu
Choose your base well: Staying on Xiamen island (the mainland city) in Siming district — near Zhongshan Road, Xiamen University and the Gulangyu ferry — is the most convenient and better value than staying on Gulangyu itself. Island guesthouses have lovely atmosphere but cost more, you have to wheel your luggage onto a ferry, and shops close early. They suit travellers who want one night on the island for the mood — see all options at the 10 best hotels in Xiamen.
⚠️ Watch out for holidays: During Chinese New Year, Golden Week (1–7 October) and the Chinese summer holidays, hotel rates spike and rooms fill fast — especially island guesthouses on Gulangyu, which can double in price and sell out far ahead. If you are not tied to those dates, travelling at a normal time is much cheaper, or book well in advance.

A satisfying meal for two comes to just ¥60–120 (~฿300–600). You can graze all day around Bashi Market (八市) or off Zhongshan Road.

Really saving money

Money-saving tips — that actually work in Xiamen

The bottom line on saving: The leanest budget that still travels comfortably in Xiamen is about ¥250–380/day (~฿1,250–1,900) — a city-side hostel, local market food, the metro and shared bikes, free city sights, and one well-planned day on Gulangyu. Xiamen is fun even on a tight budget, because most of the best things are free and the local food is both cheap and excellent.
Money matters

Paying in Xiamen — what to know before you go

📱
Alipay — the easiest way

Xiamen runs on QR codes like the rest of China — shops, restaurants, metro gates and the ferry are all easier with Alipay or WeChat Pay than cash. Link a foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay (International Mode) before you travel. See our Alipay setup guide.

💵
Cash still works

Yuan cash is still accepted in many places, especially Bashi wet market, small eateries and shops on Gulangyu. Keep a reserve of ¥200–500 (~฿1,000–2,500) for stalls that aren't set up to scan, but most of the time Alipay is all you need.

💳
Foreign credit cards

Accepted at 4–5 star hotels, better restaurants and large malls, but not at ordinary shops — don't rely on a card alone. ATMs are at the airport and in malls, withdrawing ¥300–500 at a time.

Frequently asked

FAQ · Xiamen trip budget

How much does 3 days in Xiamen cost?
It depends on your accommodation and style: a backpacker trip runs about ¥575–1,080 (~฿2,875–5,400) for the whole 3 days — city-side hostel, local market food, metro and bikes, and one day on Gulangyu · mid-range ¥1,560–2,800 (~฿7,800–14,000) covers a 3–4 star hotel, sit-down meals and several Gulangyu sites · comfort ¥4,300+ (~฿21,500+) covers a 5-star or island boutique, fine dining and guided sightseeing. None of these include flights. The good news is entry is cheap — Nanputuo Temple is free, Hulishan Fortress ¥25 and a Gulangyu combo ~¥100 — so accommodation and food are the main variables.
Is Xiamen expensive to visit?
Xiamen is very good value for a seaside city. Food and the metro are cheap: satay noodles or an oyster omelette is ¥15–40 (~฿75–200), a metro ride ¥2–7 (~฿10–35). Most sights are free or inexpensive, and Nanputuo Temple and the beaches cost nothing. The main variable is accommodation (hostels from ¥90 per night · 5-star Conrad from around ¥800 · island guesthouses on Gulangyu dearer than the city side). Pick the right base and Xiamen is an easy, affordable trip.
What is a realistic daily budget for Xiamen?
Per person per day (accommodation, food, transport and entry; excluding flights): backpacker ~¥250–420 (~฿1,250–2,100) hostel, local food, metro and bikes · mid-range ~¥700–1,200 (~฿3,500–6,000) 3–4 star hotel, sit-down meals, a Gulangyu day · comfort ¥2,000+ (~฿10,000+) 5-star or island boutique, fine dining, taxis throughout. The day you visit Gulangyu carries a ¥35–50 ferry fare plus garden entry, so it costs more than a day strolling Xiamen University, the beaches or Zhongshan Road, which are almost free.
Can I use cash in Xiamen?
Yuan cash is accepted in many places, but Xiamen runs on QR payments like the rest of China — shops, restaurants, metro gates and the ferry are all easier with Alipay or WeChat Pay, and some places scan faster than they handle cash. Set up Alipay (International Mode) before you travel with a foreign Visa or Mastercard — you can do it in the app without a Chinese phone number. Keep ¥200–500 in cash for small stalls and markets. See our Alipay & WeChat Pay guide.
When are Xiamen hotels most expensive, and when should I avoid?
During Chinese New Year (Spring Festival), Golden Week (1–7 October) and the Chinese summer holidays, hotel prices climb and Gulangyu gets very crowded — island guesthouses can double in price and book out far ahead, so avoid these dates or book early. The best windows with normal prices are October to December (clear, dry autumn) and March to May (spring). July to September is typhoon season, when the Gulangyu ferry can be suspended on some days, so check before you go. See the best time to visit China.
