Thousands of sandstone pillars piercing the mist — the floating peaks that inspired the world of Avatar — then a finish on the world's-longest cable car up Tianmen Mountain, through a natural cave called Heaven's Gate and out onto a cliff-edge glass skywalk. Forty-eight hours is just enough to capture both of Zhangjiajie's icons.
Those thousands of sandstone pillars rising out of the mist like a scene from Avatar — that is Zhangjiajie, and the place has two icons that travellers cross the world for. The first is the Avatar mountains inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park / Wulingyuan. The second is Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate), with a natural cave punched clean through the mountain, the world's-longest cable car, and a road of 99 hairpin bends. Two days is enough to cover both — as long as you get the sequence right and understand that the two sit in different areas.
This plan is built for a weekend visitor — a short Saturday-to-Sunday break, or anyone seeing Zhangjiajie for the first time who wants the icons covered. Day 1 is spent in the National Forest Park, taking in the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain at Yuanjiajie and the Golden Whip Stream, then a night in Wulingyuan, the in-park gateway town. Day 2 climbs Tianmen Mountain, which sits right beside Zhangjiajie city. The key point: the Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain are in separate zones, about 33 km / one hour apart. A split stay (Wulingyuan first, then a move into the city) is what most people do. What this plan deliberately excludes is the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, Baofeng Lake and the Yellow Dragon Cave — if you want those, see the 3-day itinerary, or start with the 1-day plan if you have less time.
The single most useful thing to know: the Forest Park is huge, and the ticket is valid for four days — get in early on Day 1, ahead of the tour buses, and cover Yuanjiajie and the Golden Whip Stream in one day. For where to stay, see the top-10 Zhangjiajie hotels for options at every budget and location.
Enter the gate early and ride the free shuttle · walk the Golden Whip Stream through the valley · take the Bailong Elevator up the cliff · the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain at Yuanjiajie and the First Bridge Under Heaven · overnight in Wulingyuan
Start early, because Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is enormous and gets busier through the morning. Enter via the Wulingyuan gate, buy the park ticket (valid for four days, with the green eco-shuttles inside included), then use the free shuttle network to reach the different areas — this is the charm of the park: you do not have to walk far to reach the highlights. An early start means better light and fewer people.
Spend the morning on the Golden Whip Stream, a flat ~5–7 km path that follows a clear stream, flanked by towering sandstone pillars on both sides, with wild monkeys along the way (watch any food in your hands). Walking the whole length takes ~2–3 hours, or do half and pick up a shuttle — it is the prettiest and easiest walk in the park before you head up high in the afternoon.
After lunch comes the highlight of the day — go up high on the Bailong Elevator, an outdoor glass lift that climbs 326 metres up a sheer cliff in about two minutes, bursting out of the rock face near the top so the whole valley of pillars opens out in front of you. It is a thrill and it saves your legs enormously (the alternatives are climbing the stairs or taking a long shuttle around).
At the top is Yuanjiajie, the area with the densest cluster of Avatar pillars. Follow the viewing trails to the highlights — the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, the pillar that inspired the floating mountains in the film, and the First Bridge Under Heaven, a natural stone arch linking two peaks over a deep gorge. If a little mist drifts through, it looks even more like stepping straight into the film.
Finish Day 1 by heading down off the mountain into Wulingyuan, the gateway town beside the park exit. Check in, drop your bags, and head out for dinner. Wulingyuan is a small town with restaurants, convenience stores and an evening pedestrian street that is nice to wander after a day on your feet.
Dinner has to be the bold, spicy Hunan–Xiangxi local food — sanxiaguo (三下锅), Zhangjiajie's "three-in-one wok" of meat, offal and pickled vegetables stir-fried together in a hot pan, sour and fiery and rich, the dish the town is known for. See more must-try dishes in the Zhangjiajie food guide.
Move into Zhangjiajie city · ride the world's-longest cable car to the summit · the Heaven's Gate cave and the 999 steps · the cliff glass skywalk · ride down the 99-bend road · depart
On the morning of Day 2, move from Wulingyuan into Zhangjiajie city (~33 km, about 40 minutes to an hour by bus or taxi), because the Tianmen cable car base is right in the city, near the train and bus stations — very handy. Stash your bags at your hotel or in a locker before heading up.
From the station in town, ride the Tianmen cable car — the world's-longest passenger cableway, about 7.5 km, floating over the city rooftops, fields and the 99-bend road below before climbing the sheer cliff to the summit, a ride of about 30 minutes with views worth every second. The Tianmen ticket includes the cable car, the shuttle buses and the upper tunnel escalators.
On the summit, follow the cliff-edge walkways to the highlights. The one you cannot miss is going down to see Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave 天门洞), a vast natural cave punched clean through the mountain like a doorway to the sky. The way down to its mouth is the 999 steps, steep and long — and if you would rather not climb, there is a tunnel escalator running alongside the lower steps (a small extra fee, ~¥32). Standing at the mouth and looking up to see the sky through the rock is genuinely enormous.
The other highlight is the cliff glass skywalk, a glass-floored path jutting out along the cliff edge hundreds of metres up, with the valley visible straight down through your feet — you slip on shoe covers (rental ~¥5), and anyone scared of heights may go a little weak-kneed, though there is a normal path to bypass it. There is also a forest cable car on top (~¥25 extra) that loops around the old-growth forest at the summit if you want easier walking.
Come down by the most fun route — ride a shuttle down the 99-bend road (Avenue Toward Heaven / 通天大道), a mountain road that switches back on itself 99 times in a short distance from the mouth of Heaven's Gate down to the base. It is famous for being both nerve-racking and beautiful — and far better as a passenger than behind the wheel.
Because the Tianmen cable car base and the mountain foot are right in the city, leaving is easy — Zhangjiajie Airport (DYG) is just ~5–10 km from the centre (~15–20 minutes), while Zhangjiajie West high-speed station connects to Changsha in about 1.5 hours, or onto the Zhangjiajie–Fenghuang line. See the China high-speed rail guide for how to book and use your passport.
This plan overnights in Wulingyuan, the gateway town, because Day 1 is spent in the park all day and you want to get in early before the crowds. For Day 2's climb up Tianmen Mountain, if you are leaving the next morning, move into Zhangjiajie city near the cable car base, the airport and the train stations for an easy departure. There are rooms at every level. See the top-10 hotels, or if you want luxury, the 6 best luxury hotels in Zhangjiajie.
Zhangjiajie has no urban rail — inside the Forest Park you use the free green shuttle buses already included with your ticket. Between zones (Wulingyuan ↔ the city, ~33 km) take the public bus at ~¥12 (about 40 min–1 h) or a taxi/DiDi. To go up the mountains you use cable cars, the Bailong Elevator and shuttles. Use Amap (高德) to navigate rather than Google. See the Wulingyuan area guide.
Set up Alipay (the international version, linked to a Visa/Mastercard) before you travel. Most shops, restaurants and ticket counters take only Alipay or WeChat Pay, and some no longer accept cash. See the Alipay & WeChat Pay setup guide.
