2 Days in Zhangjiajie —
Avatar mountains and Heaven's Gate

Thousands of sandstone pillars piercing the mist — the floating peaks that inspired the world of Avatar — then a finish on the world's-longest cable car up Tianmen Mountain, through a natural cave called Heaven's Gate and out onto a cliff-edge glass skywalk. Forty-eight hours is just enough to capture both of Zhangjiajie's icons.

Why plan matters

48 hours in Zhangjiajie — get the sequence right

Those thousands of sandstone pillars rising out of the mist like a scene from Avatar — that is Zhangjiajie, and the place has two icons that travellers cross the world for. The first is the Avatar mountains inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park / Wulingyuan. The second is Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Gate), with a natural cave punched clean through the mountain, the world's-longest cable car, and a road of 99 hairpin bends. Two days is enough to cover both — as long as you get the sequence right and understand that the two sit in different areas.

This plan is built for a weekend visitor — a short Saturday-to-Sunday break, or anyone seeing Zhangjiajie for the first time who wants the icons covered. Day 1 is spent in the National Forest Park, taking in the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain at Yuanjiajie and the Golden Whip Stream, then a night in Wulingyuan, the in-park gateway town. Day 2 climbs Tianmen Mountain, which sits right beside Zhangjiajie city. The key point: the Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain are in separate zones, about 33 km / one hour apart. A split stay (Wulingyuan first, then a move into the city) is what most people do. What this plan deliberately excludes is the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, Baofeng Lake and the Yellow Dragon Cave — if you want those, see the 3-day itinerary, or start with the 1-day plan if you have less time.

The single most useful thing to know: the Forest Park is huge, and the ticket is valid for four days — get in early on Day 1, ahead of the tour buses, and cover Yuanjiajie and the Golden Whip Stream in one day. For where to stay, see the top-10 Zhangjiajie hotels for options at every budget and location.

Day one

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain

Enter the gate early and ride the free shuttle · walk the Golden Whip Stream through the valley · take the Bailong Elevator up the cliff · the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain at Yuanjiajie and the First Bridge Under Heaven · overnight in Wulingyuan

01
Day 1
Forest Park · Golden Whip Stream · Bailong Elevator · Yuanjiajie
The Avatar Hallelujah Mountain at Yuanjiajie in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — thousands of sandstone pillars rising out of green forest, the inspiration for the floating peaks in Avatar
Morning 7.30–11.30 am · ~4 hours

Start early, because Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is enormous and gets busier through the morning. Enter via the Wulingyuan gate, buy the park ticket (valid for four days, with the green eco-shuttles inside included), then use the free shuttle network to reach the different areas — this is the charm of the park: you do not have to walk far to reach the highlights. An early start means better light and fewer people.

Spend the morning on the Golden Whip Stream, a flat ~5–7 km path that follows a clear stream, flanked by towering sandstone pillars on both sides, with wild monkeys along the way (watch any food in your hands). Walking the whole length takes ~2–3 hours, or do half and pick up a shuttle — it is the prettiest and easiest walk in the park before you head up high in the afternoon.

Forest Park ticket: ~¥240 (~฿1,200) · valid 4 days · shuttles inside included · children/seniors discounted
Golden Whip Stream: flat ~5–7 km · the full length ~2–3 hours · do half and take a shuttle
Timing: enter before ~8 am to beat the tour buses · the park opens around 7 am–6 pm
Always go in before the crowds: the Forest Park is Zhangjiajie's most popular sight, and in high season (Apr–Oct and public holidays) the queues for the Bailong Elevator and the cable cars can be very long. Going early and buying the ticket online ahead helps a lot. The ticket is valid four days but uses face/passport scanning to enter and exit, so keep it safe. Book on Klook.
Afternoon 11.30 am–5.00 pm · ~5.5 hours
Ride the Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯) → the Avatar mountains at Yuanjiajie

After lunch comes the highlight of the day — go up high on the Bailong Elevator, an outdoor glass lift that climbs 326 metres up a sheer cliff in about two minutes, bursting out of the rock face near the top so the whole valley of pillars opens out in front of you. It is a thrill and it saves your legs enormously (the alternatives are climbing the stairs or taking a long shuttle around).

At the top is Yuanjiajie, the area with the densest cluster of Avatar pillars. Follow the viewing trails to the highlights — the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, the pillar that inspired the floating mountains in the film, and the First Bridge Under Heaven, a natural stone arch linking two peaks over a deep gorge. If a little mist drifts through, it looks even more like stepping straight into the film.

Bailong Elevator: ~¥65–72 each way (~฿325–360) · 326 m in about 2 minutes · paid separately from the park ticket
Yuanjiajie: included in the park ticket · walk the viewing trails for the Hallelujah Mountain + First Bridge Under Heaven
Time up top: allow ~2–3 hours to cover the highlights · shuttles link the points on the plateau
Go up in the later afternoon to dodge the queues: the Bailong Elevator line is longest late morning and midday; after about 3 pm people start heading down and the wait shortens. It is colder and windier on top than at the base, so pack a light layer. If you have time and energy left, take a cable car over to Tianzi Mountain for another angle on the sea of pillars.
Evening 5.30–8.00 pm · down off the mountain + overnight
Head down → check in at Wulingyuan → dinner, local Xiangxi food

Finish Day 1 by heading down off the mountain into Wulingyuan, the gateway town beside the park exit. Check in, drop your bags, and head out for dinner. Wulingyuan is a small town with restaurants, convenience stores and an evening pedestrian street that is nice to wander after a day on your feet.

Dinner has to be the bold, spicy Hunan–Xiangxi local food — sanxiaguo (三下锅), Zhangjiajie's "three-in-one wok" of meat, offal and pickled vegetables stir-fried together in a hot pan, sour and fiery and rich, the dish the town is known for. See more must-try dishes in the Zhangjiajie food guide.

Wulingyuan → your hotel: the gateway town · a short walk or ride from the park gate
Dinner: ~¥40–100 per person · sanxiaguo / spicy Hunan local food
Stay tonight: Wulingyuan, so you can get into the park early the next morning (if you extend to Day 3)
Day two

Tianmen Mountain — Heaven's Gate and the cliff glass skywalk

Move into Zhangjiajie city · ride the world's-longest cable car to the summit · the Heaven's Gate cave and the 999 steps · the cliff glass skywalk · ride down the 99-bend road · depart

02
Day 2
Tianmen Mountain · Heaven's Gate · Glass Skywalk · 99-bend road
Tianmen Mountain, Zhangjiajie — a steep rock mountain with the natural Heaven's Gate cave punched through it, and the world's-longest cable car climbing to the summit
Morning 8.30 am–12.00 pm · ~3.5 hours
Move into the city → ride the cable car up Tianmen Mountain (天门山)

On the morning of Day 2, move from Wulingyuan into Zhangjiajie city (~33 km, about 40 minutes to an hour by bus or taxi), because the Tianmen cable car base is right in the city, near the train and bus stations — very handy. Stash your bags at your hotel or in a locker before heading up.

From the station in town, ride the Tianmen cable car — the world's-longest passenger cableway, about 7.5 km, floating over the city rooftops, fields and the 99-bend road below before climbing the sheer cliff to the summit, a ride of about 30 minutes with views worth every second. The Tianmen ticket includes the cable car, the shuttle buses and the upper tunnel escalators.

Wulingyuan → the city: ~33 km · bus ~¥12 about 40 min–1 h · taxi/DiDi chartered ~¥150–200
Tianmen Mountain ticket: ~¥285 (~฿1,425) · cable car + shuttle + upper tunnel escalator + insurance included
Cable car: the world's longest at ~7.5 km · ~30 minutes to the summit · the lower station is in the city
Book ahead and pick your route (A/B/C): Tianmen has several up-and-down combinations (cable car up, road down, or the reverse). Your ticket assigns a cable car time slot, and morning slots sell out fast in high season — book online ahead and arrive on time. Book on Klook.
Afternoon 12.00–4.00 pm · ~4 hours
Heaven's Gate cave, the 999 steps → the cliff glass skywalk

On the summit, follow the cliff-edge walkways to the highlights. The one you cannot miss is going down to see Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave 天门洞), a vast natural cave punched clean through the mountain like a doorway to the sky. The way down to its mouth is the 999 steps, steep and long — and if you would rather not climb, there is a tunnel escalator running alongside the lower steps (a small extra fee, ~¥32). Standing at the mouth and looking up to see the sky through the rock is genuinely enormous.

The other highlight is the cliff glass skywalk, a glass-floored path jutting out along the cliff edge hundreds of metres up, with the valley visible straight down through your feet — you slip on shoe covers (rental ~¥5), and anyone scared of heights may go a little weak-kneed, though there is a normal path to bypass it. There is also a forest cable car on top (~¥25 extra) that loops around the old-growth forest at the summit if you want easier walking.

The 999 steps: the way down to Heaven's Gate · bypass it with the lower tunnel escalator ~¥32
Glass skywalk: shoe-cover rental ~¥5 · a normal path bypasses it for anyone scared of heights
Forest cable car on top (optional): ~¥25 · loops the old-growth forest around the summit
Pack for sun, wind and good footwear: the weather on the Tianmen summit changes fast — mist in the morning, sun later. Bring a windbreaker and shoes that are comfortable on stairs. The glass skywalk does not allow high heels. If it is heavily misted, the views may close in, so check the forecast before you go up.
Afternoon–evening 4.00–6.30 pm · down the mountain + depart
Ride down the 99-bend road → depart Zhangjiajie

Come down by the most fun route — ride a shuttle down the 99-bend road (Avenue Toward Heaven / 通天大道), a mountain road that switches back on itself 99 times in a short distance from the mouth of Heaven's Gate down to the base. It is famous for being both nerve-racking and beautiful — and far better as a passenger than behind the wheel.

Because the Tianmen cable car base and the mountain foot are right in the city, leaving is easy — Zhangjiajie Airport (DYG) is just ~5–10 km from the centre (~15–20 minutes), while Zhangjiajie West high-speed station connects to Changsha in about 1.5 hours, or onto the Zhangjiajie–Fenghuang line. See the China high-speed rail guide for how to book and use your passport.

99-bend road: ride a shuttle down (included in the ticket) · 99 hairpins from the cave mouth to the base
DYG Airport: ~5–10 km from the city centre · ~15–20 minutes by road · very close
High-speed rail: Zhangjiajie West → Changsha ~1.5 h · the Zhangjiajie–Fenghuang line runs from here · book ahead

🏨
Where to stay for two days

This plan overnights in Wulingyuan, the gateway town, because Day 1 is spent in the park all day and you want to get in early before the crowds. For Day 2's climb up Tianmen Mountain, if you are leaving the next morning, move into Zhangjiajie city near the cable car base, the airport and the train stations for an easy departure. There are rooms at every level. See the top-10 hotels, or if you want luxury, the 6 best luxury hotels in Zhangjiajie.

🚌
Getting around

Zhangjiajie has no urban rail — inside the Forest Park you use the free green shuttle buses already included with your ticket. Between zones (Wulingyuan ↔ the city, ~33 km) take the public bus at ~¥12 (about 40 min–1 h) or a taxi/DiDi. To go up the mountains you use cable cars, the Bailong Elevator and shuttles. Use Amap (高德) to navigate rather than Google. See the Wulingyuan area guide.

Paying for things

Set up Alipay (the international version, linked to a Visa/Mastercard) before you travel. Most shops, restaurants and ticket counters take only Alipay or WeChat Pay, and some no longer accept cash. See the Alipay & WeChat Pay setup guide.

Frequently asked

FAQ · 2 days in Zhangjiajie

Is 2 days enough for Zhangjiajie?
Two days is enough for the two icons everyone comes for — Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park / Wulingyuan for the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain at Yuanjiajie and the Golden Whip Stream, and Day 2 on Tianmen Mountain for Heaven's Gate, the glass skywalk and the 99-bend road. It works well if you sequence it cleanly and overnight in Wulingyuan for one night. What you have to skip is the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, Baofeng Lake and the Yellow Dragon Cave, which sit in different areas. If you want those too, extend to three days for a much easier pace, or start from the 1-day plan.
Can you do 2 days in Zhangjiajie with kids?
Yes, and kids are often wide-eyed at the Bailong Elevator, which shoots 326 metres up a cliff in about two minutes, and at the Tianmen cable car, the longest in the world. The caveat is that both days involve a lot of walking and steep stairs, especially the 999 steps up to Heaven's Gate (there is a paid escalator inside the tunnel if you would rather not climb). The cliff glass skywalk has handrails and you wear shoe covers; children who are scared of heights may not like it, but there is a normal path to bypass it. Pack water, snacks and comfortable trainers, and bring a warm layer, as the mountaintops are noticeably colder than the base.
Where should I stay for a 2-day Zhangjiajie trip?
This plan overnights in Wulingyuan, the in-park gateway town, not in Zhangjiajie city, because Day 1 is spent inside the Forest Park all day and Wulingyuan is the closest base to the park gate by foot or shuttle — so you can get in early before the crowds. For the second night, if you are leaving the next morning, move into Zhangjiajie city near the Tianmen cable car base, the airport and the train stations for an easy departure. There are rooms at every level, from hostels at ¥80–150 up to luxury hotels. See the top-10 Zhangjiajie hotels for options.
How do I get between Wulingyuan and Zhangjiajie city?
The two zones are about 33 km apart. The cheap, easy option is the public bus between Wulingyuan bus station and Zhangjiajie city at around ¥12, running often every ~5–10 minutes, taking about 40 minutes to an hour, roughly 8 am–8 pm. Or take a taxi/DiDi, which is more convenient if you have a lot of luggage, at around ¥150–200. Zhangjiajie has no urban rail, so you rely on buses, taxis, DiDi or a hotel car. Inside the Forest Park itself, the free green shuttle buses are already included with your ticket.
What is a realistic budget for 2 days in Zhangjiajie?
A mid-range budget runs roughly ¥650–1,000 per person per day (~฿3,250–5,000), covering a 3-star or 4-star hotel in Wulingyuan or the city at ¥250–500, three meals at ¥120–250, transfers between zones at ¥30–150, and tickets — the big-ticket items are the Forest Park ticket at ~¥240 (valid 4 days, shuttles included), the Bailong Elevator at ~¥65–72 each way, and the Tianmen Mountain ticket at ~¥285 (cable car, shuttle and the upper tunnel escalator included). Add the lower escalator ¥32, the glass skywalk ¥5, or the forest cable car on top ¥25 if you want them. Budget travellers using hostels and walking instead of the lift and escalators can trim a fair amount.
