Phuket or Krabi
which Andaman base?

A big do-it-all island or quieter seas under towering cliffs — two faces of the Andaman, just a short hop apart. Here's how to choose, before you book.

The dilemma

Two bases, two faces of the Andaman

You've settled on the Andaman coast for your beach trip — and then you stall on the booking page, unable to decide between Phuket and Krabi. Almost everyone planning southern Thailand hits this exact wall, and there isn't one right answer, because these two neighbours deliver genuinely different moods despite sitting on the same stretch of coast.

Phuket is Thailand's largest island, with an international airport served by direct flights from around the world. It has a wide range of beaches — from busy Patong to quieter Kata, Karon and Nai Harn — a Sino-Portuguese old town, beach clubs, nightlife, restaurants at every price point, and stays from guesthouses to seafront resorts. It's the do-it-all base. Krabi is the other mood: a mainland-and-islands base that's quieter, known for the sheer limestone cliffs rising out of the sea at Railay and Ao Nang, with clear-water islands all around — made for island-hopping, snorkelling and slowing right down.

Here's the part most people miss: the two are very close — about a 2-3 hour drive apart, or a ferry ride in high season. So for many travellers the best answer isn't "which one" — it's "do both". This guide compares them honestly across every factor, then shows you how to fit both into a single trip.

Quick verdict

The short answer, before the detail

If you need to decide right now

Want convenience / lots to do / nightlife and beach clubs / easy direct flights Choose Phuket — the big island with an international airport, a wide choice of beaches, a Sino-Portuguese old town, beach clubs, Patong, and restaurants at every price. You can do everything from one base.
Want quieter seas / dramatic scenery / nature and island-hopping / couples or families resting Choose Krabi — limestone cliffs over the sea at Railay and Ao Nang, clear-water islands all around, and a calmer pace. Better for slowing down and for travellers who lean to nature over entertainment.
Phuket · The Big Island

The do-it-all island, everything in one place

Patong Beach in Phuket — a long curving stretch of sand on the Andaman Sea lined with parasols and busy with visitors

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and a beach destination known the world over. Its strength is range. The beaches run from lively Patong, with water sports and shops, to the calmer Kata, Karon, Nai Harn and Surin. Phuket Old Town has pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafes and street art. The Big Buddha and Wat Chalong sit up on the hillsides, and Promthep Cape is a classic spot for sunset.

Phuket's real advantage is Phuket International Airport, with direct flights from many cities at home and abroad — which makes getting here easy and fares often cheaper. It's also a launch point for boat trips to famous islands like Koh Phi Phi, Maya Bay and the Similan Islands (open seasonally). After dark there's Bangla Road in Patong and a string of seafront beach clubs. If you want a trip where you can do a bit of everything without changing base, Phuket covers it.

Krabi · The Quiet Coast

Sea and limestone cliffs, the calmer Andaman

Krabi is the Andaman in a different key — more about nature and calm than entertainment. What draws the world here is the limestone cliffs rising straight out of the sea, above all at Railay, a stunning beach reachable only by longtail boat, which feels like another world and is a magnet for rock climbers. Ao Nang is the main hub, with shops and stays and an easy base for island-hopping boats.

Krabi's charm is in the clear-water islands all around — Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Hong and the Separated Sea sandbar — ideal for boat trips and snorkelling. On land there's the Tiger Cave Temple, where a long stairway climbs to a wide view, plus the Emerald Pool and hot springs set in shady forest. Krabi has its own airport (smaller than Phuket's), with domestic flights and some international routes. The overall feel is more laid-back — a good match for couples and families who want a proper rest.

Railay Beach in Krabi — tall limestone cliffs framing a white-sand beach and the emerald-green Andaman Sea
Pros & cons
Limestone cliffs over the sea — dramatic views at Railay and Ao Nang
Clear-water islands — Koh Poda, Koh Hong, the Separated Sea; great snorkelling
Quiet, laid-back feel — good for couples and families resting
A serious rock-climbing scene at Railay, world-known but affordable
Rooms and food are usually cheaper than Phuket — good value
Nature on land — Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool, hot springs
Smaller airport, fewer direct international flights than Phuket
Fewer attractions and shops; much lighter nightlife
Some spots (like Railay) are boat-only — no road access
Slightly fewer services and options than Phuket

The decision

Choose this base if you are…

After a convenient trip that's easy to reach and lets you do everything without moving base — choose Phuket. The international airport means lots of direct flights, the beaches are varied, the sights are plentiful, and there's food and lodging at every level. It's the easiest to organise.
After quieter seas, beautiful cliff scenery, and a focus on nature and island-hopping — choose Krabi. The limestone of Railay and Ao Nang and the clear islands offshore make for a calmer, slower trip built around the water.
A couple wanting a quiet, romantic setting — choose Krabi, especially around Railay, where you wake up to cliffs and sea. It feels more private and is well suited to honeymoons and time for two.
Into parties, beach clubs, or wanting things to do after dark — choose Phuket. Bangla Road in Patong and the seafront beach clubs are far livelier, while Krabi is fairly quiet at night.
Travelling with six or seven days or more — do both. A 2-3 hour drive or a high-season ferry links them, so you can have Phuket's range and Krabi's calm in one trip. Read how to combine them below.
The honest answer for many

Why not do both?

🚤 Phuket + Krabi in one trip

This is what many Andaman travellers eventually figure out: you don't have to choose. The two sit side by side on the same coast, about 160-180 km apart by road — a 2-3 hour drive, minibus or bus via Phang Nga. In high season (around November to April), ferries also run between Phuket and Krabi via Koh Phi Phi, a scenic ride across the sea. During the monsoon, ferries are often cancelled or reduced, so the overland route is more reliable.

If you have six or seven days or more, doing both is the most complete Andaman trip there is — Phuket's range and Krabi's calm in one go. Compare ferries and island tours between the two on Klook (search Phuket–Krabi ferries).

Frequently asked

FAQ · Phuket vs Krabi

Should I visit Phuket or Krabi for a first Andaman trip?
If you want an easy trip with plenty to do, nightlife and beach clubs, start with Phuket. It's the big island with an international airport, direct flights from many cities, accommodation at every level, and lots of activities in one place. If you'd rather have quieter seas, dramatic limestone scenery, and a focus on nature and island-hopping — better for couples or families wanting a proper rest — Krabi is the better fit. The two are very close, around a 2-3 hour drive apart, so with six or seven days or more the honest answer is to do both. See the Thailand travel guide for the bigger picture.
How far apart are Phuket and Krabi, and how do you get between them?
They sit side by side on the Andaman coast, about 160-180 km apart by road — roughly a 2-3 hour drive, minibus or bus via Phang Nga. In high season (around November to April), ferries run between Phuket and Krabi via Koh Phi Phi, taking from about 2.5 hours to half a day depending on the service. During the monsoon, ferries are often cancelled or reduced, so the overland route is more reliable. Doing both in one trip is easy. See more in getting around Thailand.
Which has better beaches, Phuket or Krabi?
It depends on what you want. Phuket has more beaches and more variety, from busy Patong with its water sports to the calmer Kata, Karon and Nai Harn — long sandy beaches that are easy for swimming and strolling. Krabi wins on scenery: sheer limestone cliffs rising straight out of the sea at Railay and Ao Nang, and clear-water islands like Koh Poda and Koh Hong that are great for snorkelling and photos. For dramatic views and nature, Krabi has the edge; for easy swimming beaches with full facilities, Phuket is more complete. See the Phuket beaches guide and Krabi attractions.
Which is better for couples or families, Phuket or Krabi?
Couples after a quiet, romantic setting focused on relaxing and good views often prefer Krabi, especially around Railay and Ao Nang. Families with kids who want convenience — a hospital nearby, plenty of restaurants, and a wide range of things for children to do — usually find Phuket easier to manage. Both suit either group well, though; it comes down to the style of trip you want. See Krabi for couples and Phuket with kids.
What's the best time of year to visit Phuket and Krabi?
Both are on the Andaman coast, so the best window is roughly November to April — clear seas, calm winds and sunshine, ideal for swimming and island-hopping. The monsoon, around May to October, brings spells of rain and stronger winds; island boat trips can be cancelled at short notice, and some beaches fly red flags warning against swimming. The upside is fewer crowds and lower room rates. If island trips are your main goal, build in a backup plan and check the forecast before booking any boat tour. See best time to visit Phuket and best time to visit Krabi.
If doing both, should I start in Phuket or Krabi?
Most people fly into Phuket first, since it has the international airport, more flights and usually cheaper fares. Spend 3-4 days on Phuket's beaches, sights, old town and nightlife, then take a ferry (in high season) or a 2-3 hour drive to finish in Krabi for 2-3 days of quieter seas, Railay and easy island-hopping — ending the trip on a restful note. You can also fly home directly from Krabi's airport if that's more convenient. See the Phuket 3-day plan and the Krabi 3-day plan.
