FAQ

FAQ · choosing a Thai island

What's the difference between the Andaman and Gulf coasts?

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi) sits on the west; its dry season runs Nov–Apr with clear, calm water. The Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan, Koh Tao) sits on the east; it stays driest roughly Feb–Sep and gets the heaviest rain in Oct–Nov. The two coasts have opposite monsoons, so pick the side that matches your travel month.

Can I visit Thai islands during the rainy season?

Yes, but pick the right coast. If you travel May–Oct, the Gulf islands (Samui, Koh Tao) usually get more sun · if you travel Nov–Apr, the Andaman islands (Phuket, Krabi) have clearer water and more reliable boat tours. Rainy season rarely means all-day rain — it tends to come in short bursts — and accommodation is much cheaper.

Which island is best with young kids?

Krabi (Ao Nang) and Phuket suit families best: shallow beaches, easy access, hospitals and restaurants nearby · Samui works too but needs a flight or ferry · Koh Tao and Phangan lean toward diving and parties, so they're less ideal for small children.

Which island is best for diving?

Koh Tao is one of the cheapest and best places in the world to learn to dive, with Open Water courses around 9,000–11,000 baht (an estimate) · the Andaman side has the Similan Islands and Phi Phi with very clear water, but the best dive sites only open in the dry season.

How hard is it to reach each island?

Phuket is easiest, with an international airport and direct flights · Krabi also has an airport · Samui has an airport but pricier tickets · Phi Phi and Koh Tao need a ferry from Phuket/Krabi or Chumphon/Surat Thani, adding half a day to a full day of travel.

Where is the Full Moon Party?

The Full Moon Party is at Haad Rin on Koh Phangan, held monthly around the full moon · if you want a party vibe without going far, Patong in Phuket has plenty of bars and is easier to reach.
