How Much Does a
Koh Chang Trip Cost?

Real 2026 prices, all in baht — from a ฿400 hut at Lonely Beach to a ฿4,000+ beachfront resort at Klong Prao, plus the car ferry, snorkelling tours, park fees, daily budgets at every level, and worked 2-day and 3-day examples. An honest word on the monsoon that shuts much of the island.

The honest answer first

Is Koh Chang expensive? It depends when you go and which beach you pick.

The first question everyone asks before Koh Chang is "will it be expensive?" The honest answer is that it depends on your timing, your beach and how you travel. Koh Chang is Thailand's second-largest island, out in Trat province near the Cambodian border — a big, jungly, laid-back place that works for backpackers and resort-goers alike. In high season you can sleep in a beachfront hut for ฿400 a night and eat at a local canteen for ฿60, or spend ฿8,000 on a beachfront resort. The island is more flexible on budget than most people expect.

What sets it apart from the other big islands is that Koh Chang is genuinely seasonal. High season (~Nov–Apr) brings clear water, sun and snorkelling trips, and everything is open, with prices nudging up over New Year and Songkran. But the monsoon (~May–Oct) brings rain, a rough sea, and the snorkelling tours, many resorts, restaurants and beach bars close or run reduced hours. Rooms are cheaper then, but you have to check that what you want is still open. The two biggest variables are the season and the beach you choose.

Koh Chang is an island with no train, no airport on the island and no metro — you take a bus or fly to Trat first, then cross on a car ferry from the mainland piers. The ferry fare and the Bangkok bus or flight are the two big add-on costs. All prices on this page are compiled from typical current 2026 high-season rates and are planning ranges, not guarantees — and they climb over New Year and Songkran.

A note on these figures: The prices in this guide are indicative high-season ranges (outside festival peaks) drawn from current typical market data, all in baht. They are not quotes or guarantees. Actual costs vary by season, booking lead time and specific choices — and ferry fares should be confirmed at the pier. In the May–Oct monsoon rooms are cheaper but many places close, so always check before you book.

Getting to the island

Reaching Koh Chang from Bangkok — bus + ferry vs flight

🚌
Cost: Bangkok → Trat → Koh Chang
Per person, each way · Koh Chang has no airport on the island — you reach Trat, then cross by ferry
Way Per person Time Notes
Bus / minivan, Bangkok → Trat ferry piers ฿250–500 ~5–6 hr From Ekkamai / Mo Chit / Suvarnabhumi; some run to the pier
Flight, Bangkok (mostly Don Muang) → Trat Airport (TDX) ฿1,300–3,000 ~1 hr flight Bangkok Airways · then a van + ferry to the island
Private car / taxi, Bangkok → pier ฿2,500–4,000
(per car)
~4.5–5 hr Can drive onto the ferry · good value for a group
Shared van, Trat Airport → pier ฿100–200 ~20–30 min Meets flights at the airport · charterable
The ferry fare (a cost to add in): Car/passenger ferries cross from the Trat-side piers (Ao Thammachat / Centre Point, in the Laem Ngop area) to the island piers (Ao Sapparot / Dan Kao) in about 30–45 minutes. A foot passenger pays roughly ฿80 each way · a car with driver around ฿120 and up each way (check at the pier, as rates change). Boats run through the day, with the last sailings in the late afternoon or early evening — fewer in the monsoon, when the sea is rougher. Full detail in the getting-to-Koh-Chang guide.

⚠️ No train, no airport on the island: Koh Chang is an island reached two main ways — a bus/minivan to Trat then the ferry, or a flight to Trat Airport then a van + the ferry. There is no train to it, and no metro, BTS or MRT on the island. Build the return ferry into your budget (around ฿160 per person on foot).
Accommodation

Koh Chang stays — price by beach

🏨
Price per night (high season)
Typical Agoda / Trip.com / Booking rates for one room
Type Per night Where you find it Notes
Hut / dorm bed ฿250–500 Lonely Beach Wooden huts / shared rooms, backpacker scene, near the bars
Guesthouse / small resort ฿600–1,200 White Sand / Lonely Private fan/AC room, walkable to the beach and eateries
Mid-range resort ฿1,200–2,800 White Sand / Klong Prao / Kai Bae Pool, AC rooms, some beachfront, breakfast often included
Beachfront resort (upper-tier) ฿3,000–6,000 Klong Prao / White Sand On the sand, sea views, big pool, full-service
Top-tier resort / villa ฿6,000–12,000+ Klong Prao / quiet south Pool villas, spa, quiet beach; some sit further south
Choosing a beach: White Sand and Lonely Beach are the cheapest and most walkable bases, suiting first-timers and backpackers. Klong Prao is long and quiet, good for couples and families, at mid-to-upper prices. Kai Bae is relaxed with a viewpoint and decent value. Bang Bao and the quiet south are remote and need transport. Pick one base, since the west-coast road is long and winding. Compare beaches in the Koh Chang beaches guide and the where-to-stay guide.

⚠️ Monsoon: cheaper rooms, but much closes: From May to October, Koh Chang accommodation drops a lot (some places by half), but many resorts, restaurants and beach bars close or cut their hours, and the Koh Rang snorkelling tours usually stop. If you travel then, check directly with your stay that it is still open and accept that the island will be very quiet. Over New Year and Songkran prices nudge up and sell out quickly, so book ahead.
Food

Eating on Koh Chang — local canteens to seafood by the sea

🍜
Food cost per day
Per person per day (3 meals)
Level Per day/person Examples Notes
Local canteens / made-to-order ฿200–400 Pad krapao / fried rice ฿50–80 · noodles ฿50–70 In Klong Son village / behind the beach — cheaper than beachfront
Beachfront / sit-down restaurants ฿400–800 Thai / Western, sea-view tables, ฿120–250 a plate On White Sand / Klong Prao / Kai Bae, nicer setting
Bang Bao seafood / fresh fish meal ฿600–1,500 Prawns, crab, fish, squid, weighed and cooked fresh Pier restaurants at Bang Bao · pick by size, check price/kg
Resort dining / fine dining ฿1,000–3,000+/meal Beachfront resort dining rooms, seafood sets Great views, far pricier than the places outside
Doing seafood right: Bang Bao pier is the place to eat fresh seafood over the water — pick your prawns, crab and fish from the display, have it weighed and cooked. Always ask the price per kilo before you order, since seafood is sold by weight. It is fresh and atmospheric, but some places charge tourist rates, so compare a few. Getting around the island

Transport on Koh Chang — songthaew vs scooter

🛺
On-island fares
Per trip / per day · Koh Chang has no metro, no Grab and no public bus
Mode Price Notes
Songthaew (red taxi), short hop within a beach ฿50–80 /person Runs the west-coast road, fare by distance
Songthaew between beaches (e.g. White Sand → Kai Bae) ฿80–150 /person Flag one down · groups can negotiate · dearer at night
Songthaew, pier → White Sand Beach ฿100–150 /person Waiting at the pier · fare by destination
Motorbike / scooter rental ฿200–350 /day + fuel ~฿50–100/day · most freedom, but see the safety note below
Car / jeep rental ฿1,200–2,000 /day Good for groups / families · automatic is easier on the steep hills
Boat taxi between beaches / islands ฿charter by distance Agree the price first · used for reaching the small offshore islands
⚠️ A blunt word on scooters: Koh Chang's hills are very steep, especially the road between Kai Bae and Lonely Beach, and inexperienced riders crash a lot. Wear a helmet, check the brakes before you set off, and if you are unsure, walk the steepest stretches or take a songthaew instead. Never ride at night or after drinking. There is no Grab and no public bus here, so songthaews and rentals are the way around. More in the getting-around guide.
Tip: Koh Chang has no metro, no public bus and no Grab — the songthaew (red taxi) is the main public transport, cheap and adequate when you are not in a rush. Scooters give freedom but demand care on the hills. Because the beaches line up along the coast road, basing yourself on one beach and exploring around it keeps transport costs down.

Scuba diving course / trip ฿2,500–4,500 Dive shops at Bang Bao · fun dive or an Open Water course
Kayaking / mangrove paddle at Salak Phet ฿300–800 Kayak by the hour, or a half-day mangrove tour
Elephant camp (observe / bathe, no riding) ฿800–1,500 Choose welfare-focused camps for watching / feeding / bathing · avoid riding · book via Klook
On the park and elephant welfare: Koh Chang and Koh Rang sit within Mu Ko Chang National Park, with entry fees at Klong Plu Waterfall and on the marine tours (confirm the current rate). Help keep it clean — take your litter and never touch the coral. As for elephants, the island is named after them but has none in the wild, only camps — choose ones that focus on watching, feeding and bathing rather than riding, and look into animal welfare. See everything in the Koh Chang attractions guide.
⚠️ Snorkelling tours usually stop in the monsoon: The Koh Rang and southern-island trips mostly run in high season (Nov–Apr), when the water is clear. From May to October the sea turns rough and the tours often stop or cut their frequency, so if you are set on snorkelling, come in the dry season. Detail in the snorkelling & island-hopping guide.

Money-saving tips — that actually work on Koh Chang

The bottom line: The leanest budget that still makes Koh Chang comfortable is ฿900–1,500 a day (excluding the ferry and the Bangkok journey) — a hut or guesthouse at White Sand or Lonely Beach, local canteens, songthaews and mostly free beaches. The single biggest lever is picking the right month: come in high season outside the festivals for clear water, running tours and prices below their peak.
Money matters

Paying on Koh Chang — what to know before you go

💵
Cash still matters

Local canteens, songthaews, small guesthouses and many beachfront eateries run mainly on cash. Bring enough with you. There are some ATMs on the island but not many, and out-of-network withdrawal fees can apply — it is worth drawing cash on the Trat mainland before you cross.

📱
PromptPay / QR

Many shops and resorts accept PromptPay transfers and QR payments (handy if you hold a Thai bank account), so you need not carry much cash. Some small places still prefer cash, though, so carrying both is the safest bet.

💳
Credit cards

Accepted at mid-to-upper resorts and larger venues, but not at local canteens, songthaews or small beach eateries. Don't rely on cards alone — carry cash as your main method, especially if you base on a quiet beach.

Frequently asked

FAQ · Koh Chang trip budget

How much does 3 days in Koh Chang cost?
In high season, per person for 3 days / 2 nights (excluding the Bangkok journey, but including the return ferry): backpacker ~฿3,000–4,900 with a White Sand or Lonely Beach hut, local canteens and songthaews · mid-range ~฿5,400–8,900 with a Klong Prao or White Sand resort and a snorkelling day · comfort ฿10,000+ with an upper-tier beachfront resort. Add roughly ฿600–1,200 per person for the return Bangkok bus. In the May–Oct monsoon rooms are cheaper but the snorkelling tours usually stop. See the 3-day Koh Chang plan.
How much is the ferry to Koh Chang?
The car ferry crosses from the Trat-side piers (Ao Thammachat / Centre Point, in the Laem Ngop area) to the island in about 30–45 minutes. A foot passenger pays roughly ฿80 each way · a car with driver around ฿120 and up each way (check current rates at the pier, as they change). Boats run through the day, with the last sailings in the late afternoon or early evening, and fewer crossings in the monsoon when the sea is rougher. Budget around ฿160 per person for the return on foot. See how to get there in the getting-to-Koh-Chang guide.
What is a realistic daily budget for Koh Chang?
In high season, per person per day (accommodation, food, island transport and activities, excluding the ferry and the Bangkok journey): backpacker ~฿900–1,500 with a White Sand or Lonely Beach hut, local canteens and songthaews · mid-range ~฿2,000–3,500 with a Klong Prao or White Sand resort, a scooter and a tour · comfort ฿5,000+ with an upper-tier beachfront resort, diving and big seafood dinners. In the May–Oct monsoon rooms drop noticeably but the tours and many places close.
Which beach on Koh Chang gives the best value?
White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach give the best value on a tight budget — both are packed with guesthouses, huts and cheap eateries within walking distance. Klong Prao and Kai Bae are the mid-to-upscale resort zones: quieter but pricier. Bang Bao and the quiet south are remote and need transport. Pick a single beach to base on, since the west-coast road is long and winding. Compare them in the Koh Chang beaches guide and the hotels in 10 best Trat / Koh Chang hotels.
Is Koh Chang worth visiting in the monsoon, and is it really cheaper?
Yes, it is doable and rooms drop noticeably, but you need to know that the south-west monsoon (~May–Oct) brings rain and a rough sea: the Koh Rang snorkelling and dive trips usually stop, and many resorts, restaurants and beach bars close or run reduced hours. Koh Chang is genuinely seasonal — far quieter than Phuket or Samui in low season. The upsides are lush jungle, full waterfalls at Klong Plu, few crowds and cheap rooms. The ferry still runs but crossings can be choppy, so check your stay and tours are open before booking. See the month-by-month detail in the best time to visit Koh Chang.
