Koh Chang Beach Bars & Nightlife
Which beach to party, which to chill

After dark, Koh Chang is bare feet in the sand, live music drifting on the sea breeze, and fire flickering down on Lonely Beach. This guide walks the beach bars beach by beach, tells you straight which beach is for parties and which is for quiet, and gives you the honest truth about the low season, when a lot of places close.

Before You Head Out

What Koh Chang nights are actually like

Picture this: 9 pm on Lonely Beach, your feet still warm from sand that baked all day. A circle of people watches a fire-spinner trace loops to a reggae beat, the bar beside them sends up the smell of a fruit-spiked bucket and bursts of laughter, and one beach over, others sit in canvas chairs nursing a quiet beer, watching the waves in the dark. This is Koh Chang after sunset — both the loud and the still on one island.

Let's be straight up front — Koh Chang nightlife is mellow, not Phuket or Samui. No kilometre-long bar street, no clubs with famous DJs every night. The liveliest spot is Lonely Beach, with its party bars and fire shows; every other beach leans toward beach bars, live music and watching the sun go down. We take you through five beach-bar areas, ordered from the liveliest beach to the quietest, with one of the most important facts up top — in low season, May to October, many bars close. For what to eat on the island alongside a night out, read our Koh Chang food guide too.

5 Beach-Bar Areas

Which beach, which kind of night — area by area

Ordered from the liveliest beach to the quietest, early-to-bed one

A night beach party on Koh Chang, blue lights cutting through coconut palms and a crowd of silhouettes — the after-dark party scene on Lonely Beach 1
The liveliest · parties and fire shows
Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam)
Lonely Beach · south-west coast, just past Kai Bae · the backpacker hub

This is the island's party hub — a small village behind the beach packed with cheap guesthouses and bars that run late into the night. The crowd is backpacker, the drinks are the cheapest on the island, and the centre is Soi 1, where bars face each other and travellers from everywhere pile in together.

The names that come up most: Ting Tong, the party bar widely called the wildest on the island, going late; Himmel across from it; Cancun Bar and 15 Palms down on the sand, known for fire shows most nights; and beach bars like Nature Rocks at Nature Beach Resort, about a 10-minute walk from the main bar cluster. (Names and opening hours shift with the season — check on the ground.)

Getting there: red songthaew on the west-coast road / scooter
Prices: beer ฿80–140 · bucket ฿250–400
Best time: after 21:00 · some bars to dawn
Payment: cash / transfer · some cards
An honest warning (read this): the road from Kai Bae down to Lonely Beach is steep and very dark at night. Never drink and ride — drunk riders crash here a lot. If you're partying here, arrange a songthaew in advance, or stay on the same beach as the bar and walk back. And at the fire shows, stand behind the line the crew sets up; don't get close or try it yourself.
View of Koh Chang's offshore islands and sea at dusk from the Kai Bae viewpoint — representing the west-coast sunset that White Sand Beach bars look out over 2
The most complete and easiest · live music + sunset
White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao)
White Sand Beach · the main beach in the north · the most hotels and bars

If you want a sunset cocktail followed by live music, White Sand Beach is the most direct answer. It's the longest, most developed beach, with bars, restaurants and places to stay lined up the whole way, and it's the easiest to reach because it sits near the northern ferry arrival. The vibe is busy but not crazy.

The names that come up: Sabay Bar, the best-known beach bar here, with regular live music and a crowd that builds after sunset; Oodie's Place, where local musicians play rock and reggae; and a string of sand-side bars that set out canvas chairs and low tables so you can sit with your feet in the sand. (Bars change hands, so wander and see what's on.)

Getting there: near the north ferry pier · songthaew is easiest
Prices: beer ฿90–140 · cocktail ฿150–280
Best time: sunset ~18:00, on into the night
Payment: cash / transfer · some cards
Pro tip: come about half an hour before sunset to grab a front-row table on the sand. Many bars run their happy hour right then — buy-one-get-one or discounts — so you can sip through the sunset, and the crowd fills in on its own once the band starts after dark.
People sitting under a thatched beach-bar roof on Koh Chang with a hanging lamp, watching the sun set over the sea — the chilled sunset-bar mood of Kai Bae 3
Chilled + live music · a quieter vibe
Kai Bae (Hat Kai Bae)
Kai Bae · just south of White Sand Beach · near the Kai Bae viewpoint

Kai Bae is the middle ground — enough beach bars and live music to have a good night, but a quieter, easier vibe than White Sand. It suits people who want something to do in the evening without the crowds. The beach has little islands just offshore, lovely in the evening light, and the Kai Bae viewpoint sits to the south, where people drive up for sunset before coming back to a bar.

The names that come up: Sabai Bar & Grill, known for its live music, and Fin, with Thai and Western food, cocktails and a band that plays a mix of styles. The bands here often run later than other beaches because people settle in for a long, easy night. (Check the band schedule and opening hours on the ground — they shift with the season.)

Getting there: songthaew / scooter · mind the steep hill
Prices: beer ฿80–140 · cocktail ฿150–250
Best time: evening to late · bands usually from ~20:00
Payment: cash / transfer · some cards
Mind the hill: the road from Kai Bae down to Lonely Beach is the steepest on the island. If you're riding a scooter yourself, check the brakes before you set off, go down in low gear, and don't ride drunk or late on a pitch-dark road. If you're not confident, it's fine to walk the bike down the steep bit.
Charcoal-grilled seafood on Koh Chang — prawns, shellfish and fish — representing the seafood restaurants and pier bars at Bang Bao in the evening 4
A quiet drink on the pier · the far south
Bang Bao + the sunset spots
Bang Bao · the old fishing village in the south · a wooden pier over the sea

Bang Bao is an old fishing village with a wooden pier running out over the sea, lined with seafood restaurants, dive shops and little stores. At night it isn't a party — it's a place for a quiet drink, watching the boats come in and the lights ripple on the water. Plenty of people come for a seafood dinner out on the pier, then stay for a cold beer with the sea breeze.

This mood suits anyone who wants to end the evening calmly rather than loudly. The bars here tend to close much earlier than Lonely Beach, because it's an early-to-bed corner of the island. Walking to the end of the pier to see the small lighthouse at dusk is pretty too — a good, easy way to round off a quiet night.

Getting there: songthaew from the main beaches, ~30–40 min
Prices: beer ฿90–150 · seafood priced by the kilo
Best time: dusk to early evening · closes early
Payment: cash / transfer
Plan your way back: Bang Bao is far from the main beaches and songthaews get scarce at night. Agree with a driver to come back at a set time, or check the last run before you head out. Don't wait until late to look for a ride home, or you may get stuck there.
Koh Chang's sea and offshore islands at dusk — representing the calm mood of Klong Prao and the quiet beaches, where only a few seafront bars sit 5
Quiet, early nights · good for couples/families
Klong Prao and the quiet beaches
Klong Prao · the southern and smaller beaches · only a few seafront bars

If your ideal night is stargazing to the sound of the waves with a cold glass of wine, Klong Prao and the quiet beaches to the south are your place. Klong Prao is a long, calm beach with mid-range to upscale resorts; there are only a few seafront bars, but the setting is good, and most are resort bars or restaurants with tables out on the sand.

There's no party here and people turn in early, which makes it right for couples and families who want an easy drink, soft music and a comfortable walk back to the room. Some resorts light a beach bonfire or put on quiet music at the weekend — ask your hotel what's on and when. Plenty of people pick a beach like this as their base, then drive over to Lonely Beach only on the nights they feel like something louder.

Getting there: songthaew along the west-coast road
Prices: beer ฿100–150 · cocktail ฿180–300
Best time: evening · most close around 22:00–23:00
Payment: cash / transfer · some cards
Pick what fits you: Koh Chang's strength is its clear zoning. Want quiet? Stay at Klong Prao, Kai Bae or a southern beach. Want a party? Drive over to Lonely Beach. Pick the beach that matches the night you want, and you won't be stuck with somewhere too loud or too dead.

6 after-dark moods you shouldn't miss

This is what a Koh Chang night offers — pick the one that fits you

🔥
Fire shows on the sand
Fire Show · Lonely Beach
Performers spin fire balls and poi in loops to the music on the dark sand. The main spot is Lonely Beach; bars like Cancun and 15 Palms run them most nights in high season, starting around 21:00–22:00. Free to watch with a drink — always stand behind the line.
🎸
Live music & reggae
Live Music & Reggae
Local bands play rock, reggae and the hits at the beach bars — White Sand and Kai Bae have the most, some with a band every night in high season. Sit with your feet in the sand and a cold beer for a long, easy set. Very laid-back.
🌅
Sunset bars
Sunset Bar
Koh Chang faces west, so the sun sets straight into the sea. Nearly every beach has sand-side bars that double as front-row seats for it. Come half an hour early for a front table — many run their happy hour right at sunset.
🍹
Buckets & cocktails
Buckets & Cocktails
Mixed-spirit buckets are the Lonely Beach party staple (฿250–400 a bucket), with sand-side cocktails on the other beaches (฿150–300). Drink to your own limit — island pours are often strong, so go slow.
🦪
Grilled seafood & beer
Seafood & Beer
Many bars do charcoal-grilled seafood — prawns, shellfish, squid — with a cold beer, especially out on the Bang Bao pier. It's the full-belly version of a Koh Chang night. For more, see our Koh Chang seafood guide.
Bonfires & stargazing
Beach Bonfire & Stargazing
The southern quiet beaches and Klong Prao have dark skies and full stars. Some resorts light a beach bonfire at the weekend. Sit quietly to the sound of the waves — good for couples and families. Ask your hotel what's on.
One Night Out

A Koh Chang night out from sunset to late

A sample route from sunset to late — adjust to your energy

1
Evening · sunset from the Kai Bae viewpoint
Start at the Kai Bae viewpoint, looking over the little islands as the sun drops into the sea (small entry/parking fee). Get the classic Koh Chang photo before the light goes. Budget ~฿50–100
2
Dusk · happy-hour cocktails on White Sand
Drive back to White Sand Beach, grab a front-row table on the sand at a bar like Sabay Bar, catch the happy hour and sip a cocktail while you wait for the band to start after dark. Budget ~฿200–350
3
Early-late · live music at Kai Bae (optional)
Want to keep it chilled and quieter, swing by Kai Bae for a band at Fin or Sabai Bar & Grill, where sets often run late. Sit with your feet in the sand, a cold beer and the music. Budget ~฿150–300
4
Late · party and fire show on Lonely Beach
Want a louder finish, arrange a songthaew over to Lonely Beach, catch the fire show at Cancun or 15 Palms, then carry on at Ting Tong, which runs late — but don't drink and ride back yourself. Budget ~฿250–500
Know Before You Go

A few things that keep your night safe

🛵
Don't drink and ride
Koh Chang's roads are very steep, especially Kai Bae to Lonely Beach, and pitch-dark at night; drunk riders crash often. Get back by red songthaew or arrange a driver in advance. If you're on the same beach as the bar, walk.
🌧️
Low season closes a lot
From May to October the rain is heavy and the sea rough, and many beach bars and restaurants close for the season or run reduced hours — especially the small Lonely Beach bars. Ask your resort which bars are open tonight first. The busy window is Nov–Apr.
🔥
Fire shows — behind the line
Fire-spinning is fun but dangerous. Always stand behind the line the crew sets up; don't get close or try it yourself, as sparks and burning fuel can hurt you. Keep kids well back. In low season shows may be cancelled if it's raining or windy.
🤝
Respect the neighbours
Koh Chang isn't a party-all-over island. The quiet beaches and Klong Prao have early sleepers and families, so loud music or noise late at night doesn't fit. If you want a party, head to Lonely Beach, which exists for exactly that.
🍹
Buckets are strong — know your limit
The mixed-spirit buckets on Lonely Beach are often stronger than they taste. Go slow, drink water in between, keep an eye on your own glass, and go out with a group so you can look out for each other — safer than going alone.
🔦
Carry a torch on dark roads
Many stretches of road have no lights. Heading back late, carry a torch or use your phone light along the verge, watch for traffic and the steep hills. Grab is essentially unavailable on the island — rely on songthaews and set a pickup time.
Frequently Asked

FAQ · what travellers ask before a Koh Chang night out

Is Koh Chang nightlife as wild as Phuket or Samui?
Honestly, no — Koh Chang nightlife is far more relaxed. There's no bar street like Phuket's Bangla or the clubs of Samui. The liveliest spot is Lonely Beach, where a handful of party bars and fire shows — places like Ting Tong and Himmel — run late into the night. Every other beach leans toward beach bars with live music and sunset drinking: a beer with your feet in the sand and a band playing. If you want a mellow island party scene, Koh Chang is perfect; if you're after big clubs and famous DJs every night, you may be disappointed. To compare beaches, see our Koh Chang beaches guide.
Do the bars on Koh Chang close in low season (May–Oct)?
Many do. During the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, the rain is heavy and the sea is rough, and a lot of beach bars, restaurants and resorts close for the season or run reduced hours — especially the small bars on Lonely Beach. What stays open is usually the bigger bars in the middle of White Sand Beach and Kai Bae, but on any given night there may be few bars open and thin crowds. The best window for nightlife is November to April, when everything is open and busy; December–January and Songkran are the peak. If you come in the rains, ask your resort which bars are still open first. See the best time to visit for the full season picture.
How much do drinks cost at Koh Chang beach bars?
It depends on the beach and the bar. A bottled beer at a typical beach bar runs about ฿80–140, a cocktail ฿150–280, and a mixed-spirit bucket on Lonely Beach ฿250–400. The backpacker bars on Lonely Beach are the cheapest; resort bars and the nicer view bars in the middle of White Sand cost a bit more. Many places run a happy hour around sunset with buy-one-get-one or discounts, so that's the best-value window to drink. Prices are rough ranges and can rise in peak season.
Where can I see a fire show on Koh Chang?
The main place for fire shows is Lonely Beach. Beach bars such as Cancun Bar and 15 Palms are known for fire-spinning and fire-ball shows most nights in high season, usually starting around 21:00–22:00. They're free to watch if you buy a drink. They're great to watch, but stand behind the line the crew sets up — don't get close or try it yourself, as sparks and burning fuel can hurt you. In low season the shows may be cancelled when it's raining or windy.
How do I get back to my hotel safely after a night out on Koh Chang?
Never drink and ride. Koh Chang's roads are very steep, especially the stretch between Kai Bae and Lonely Beach, and pitch-dark at night; drunk riders crash often. Get back by shared songthaew (red taxi) along the west-coast road — at night they take longer and charge more, so agree the fare first — or arrange a driver in advance. If you're staying on the same beach as the bar, walking back is safest. Grab is essentially unavailable on the island, so songthaews are your main option. Carry a torch or use your phone light on unlit roads, and go in a group rather than alone. For more, read getting around Koh Chang.
Can I go out at night on Koh Chang with kids or as a couple wanting somewhere quiet?
Easily. Koh Chang gives you two kinds of evening. If you want quiet, base yourself on Klong Prao, Kai Bae or one of the quieter southern beaches, where there are only a few seafront bars, easy cocktails, soft music and early nights — good for couples and families, with stargazing and the sound of the waves. If you want the party scene, you can drive over to Lonely Beach only on the nights you feel like it. That clear zoning is one of Koh Chang's strengths: pick the beach that matches the evening you want. To choose a base, see where to stay.
