How Much Does a
Zhangjiajie Trip Cost?

Real 2026 price ranges across every category — from an ¥80-a-night hostel to a ¥600+ Wulingyuan resort. But the big item here is tickets: Forest Park ¥228, the Bailong Elevator, cable cars, Tianmen Mountain and the Glass Bridge. Three worked daily budgets, a full 3–4 day cost example, and the tips that actually cut spend in the land of the Avatar pillars.

Before you plan

Is Zhangjiajie expensive — the honest answer

Picture standing on the Yuanjiajie viewpoint, watching a thousand sandstone pillars pierce the mist exactly like a scene from Avatar. That's Zhangjiajie — the place people fly across the world to see in person. The first question Thai travellers ask is "will it be expensive?" The honest answer is stays and food are cheap, but tickets are pricey — Zhangjiajie is a city where entry fees are a bigger budget item than in almost anywhere else in China, because every great view sits behind a ticket, and you usually pay on top for a cable car or elevator to reach it.

First, understand the layout. Zhangjiajie splits into two main zones about 33 km (~1 hr) apart. One is Wulingyuan (武陵源), the gateway town for the National Forest Park — your base for the Avatar pillars, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream and the Bailong Elevator (stay ~2 nights). The other is Zhangjiajie city (Yongding district), home to the in-town Tianmen Mountain cable car base, DYG airport and the high-speed rail stations (stay ~1 night, on arrival or before you fly out). The most popular plan is a split stay — Wulingyuan first, then pick up Tianmen Mountain in the city on the way out.

Now the main variable: tickets are the biggest single block. The Forest Park ticket alone is ¥228 (valid 4 days), and that doesn't include the Bailong Elevator at ¥65, the Tianzi/Yangjiajie cable cars at ¥72–76, Tianmen Mountain at ¥278, or the Glass Bridge at ¥178. A full main set comes to about ¥850–950 (~฿4,250–4,750) per person. Accommodation, by contrast, is far cheaper — hostels from ¥80 (~฿400), a 4-star Wulingyuan resort ¥300–500, and a 5-star like the Pullman ¥600–700. A local dish like sanxiaguo (the three-layer pot), shared by two or three, is just ¥30–80. Every price on this page is gathered from typical current rates (2026) and given as a planning range, not a fixed quote.

Note: Prices on this page are general reference ranges gathered from current data. Actual costs vary with season, how far ahead you book, and market changes. Zhangjiajie revises its ticket prices fairly often, and several tickets have separate high/low-season rates, so check before you go. Exchange rate used: ¥1 ≈ ฿5.

Accommodation

Zhangjiajie hotels — two zones, two styles

🏨
Cost per night
Typical rates on Agoda / Trip.com / Booking for one room
Type Per night In baht Notes
Hostel (dorm bed) ¥80–120 ~฿400–600 Dorm / small room — e.g. Cloud Youth Hostel in the city
Budget hotel (2–3★) ¥150–280 ~฿750–1,400 Private room — e.g. Hampton by Hilton (Tianmen / Forest Park), city or Wulingyuan
4-star resort, Wulingyuan ¥300–500 ~฿1,500–2,500 Mountain views, walk/shuttle to the park gate — e.g. Manyuan Resort / Wulingyuan Hotel / Lanting
5-star, Wulingyuan ¥600–700 ~฿3,000–3,500 e.g. Pullman Zhangjiajie / Hilton Garden Inn Wulingyuan, near the park gate
City / Tianmen area hotel ¥300–500 ~฿1,500–2,500 By the Tianmen cable car + airport — e.g. Wyndham Garden / Huatian / Hampton Tianmen
How to pick your base: the classic Zhangjiajie plan is a split stay — go to Wulingyuan first so you wake up to the mountains and walk straight into the park (~2 nights), then move to the city / Tianmen area for 1 night on the way out to do the Tianmen Mountain cable car before you fly (the airport is close to the city). On a tight budget you can stay in a city hostel the whole time and bus into the park, but you'll lose about an hour each way in transit.

Eating in Zhangjiajie — spicy three-layer pots, cheap

🍲
Food cost per day
Per person, per day (3 meals)
Level Per day/person In baht Examples
Street food / local spots ¥40–70 ~฿200–350 Hunan rice noodles · Wulingyuan street snacks · stinky tofu
Sanxiaguo / three-layer pot (shared by 2–3) ¥30–80/pot ~฿150–400 The signature Tujia dish · braised meat and offal stacked in layers, served on a burner
Casual meal, simple restaurant (per person) ¥25–50 ~฿125–250 Rice with toppings / spicy Hunan stir-fried veg / a loaded bowl of noodles
Sit-down / special meal (per person) ¥60–120 ~฿300–600 A full Tujia spread / hotel restaurants / Hunan smoked pork
Sanxiaguo is the local dish to try: the Tujia "three-layer pot" stacks braised meat, offal and vegetables and arrives bubbling on a burner. One pot feeds two or three for ¥30–80 (~฿150–400) — filling and great value. The food here is firmly Hunan-spicy, so tell the shop if you don't take heat. See our Zhangjiajie food guide.

Zhangjiajie has no urban rail: the city moves by bus, taxi, DiDi and tour bus/charter. The sights split into two zones (Wulingyuan ↔ city/Tianmen Mountain) about 33 km (~1 hr) apart. The bonus is that the Forest Park has a free shuttle-bus network (included in your ticket) running all over and linking every viewpoint, so you pay nothing extra inside the park. Use the Amap app (高德) or Apple Maps instead of Google Maps. For travel between cities, take the high-speed train from Zhangjiajie West station. See the China high-speed rail guide.

Money-saving tips — that actually work in Zhangjiajie

Budget bottom line: the leanest comfortable budget in Zhangjiajie is about ¥350–500/day (~฿1,750–2,500) — a hostel, sanxiaguo and local spots, the free in-park shuttle, and only the main highlight tickets. But remember that tickets are hard to cut much, because the best Avatar-pillar views sit inside paid zones. Save a solid chunk for the two main tickets, and economise elsewhere instead.
Money

Paying in Zhangjiajie — know this before you go

📱
Alipay — essential

Many shops and restaurants in Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan take only Alipay or WeChat Pay — no cash or cards at all. Link a Visa/Mastercard to Alipay (International Mode) before you travel. See the Alipay setup guide.

💵
Cash still works in places

Cash yuan is still taken at small shops, wet markets, noodle stalls, and in the villages around the park where the signal is weak. Keep ¥200–400 (~฿1,000–2,000) as backup, but you won't need much — Alipay covers nearly everywhere a traveller goes.

📶
Internet + VPN first

Google Maps, LINE and IG don't work in China without a VPN. Buy an eSIM that roams outside China (it clears the Great Firewall) before you go, and use Amap instead of Google Maps. See the China internet, VPN & eSIM guide.

Frequently asked

FAQ · Zhangjiajie trip budget

How much does a 3–4 day trip to Zhangjiajie cost?
It depends on your accommodation and travel style: backpacker runs about ¥1,330–2,060 (~฿6,650–10,300) for a 4-day trip, covering a hostel, sanxiaguo, buses and the main highlight tickets · mid-range ¥2,830–4,600 (~฿14,150–23,000), with a 4★ hotel, the Glass Bridge and a shared tour · luxury ¥5,800+ (~฿29,000+), with a resort, a private car and guide, and premium show seats. Excludes flights. What makes a Zhangjiajie budget different is that tickets are the biggest single cost — just the main set is about ¥850–950 per person.
Is Zhangjiajie expensive for travellers?
Stays and food are cheap, but tickets are pricey — entry fees are a bigger budget item here than in almost any other Chinese city. Hostels start at ¥80 (~฿400) a night, and a local dish like sanxiaguo (the three-layer pot) shared by two or three is just ¥30–80 (~฿150–400). But the Forest Park ticket alone is ¥228 (valid 4 days), before you add the Bailong Elevator at ¥65, cable cars at ¥72–76 and the Tianmen Mountain ticket at ¥278 — so the trip's total ticket cost usually beats the accommodation. That's the thing to plan first.
What daily budget should I set for Zhangjiajie?
Per person, per day (accommodation, food, transport and tickets; flights excluded): backpacker ~¥350–600 (~฿1,750–3,000) — hostel, local eats, bus + DiDi · mid-range ~¥800–1,300 (~฿4,000–6,500) — 4★ hotel, full tickets and cable cars · luxury ¥2,500+ (~฿12,500+) — resort or 5-star, private car and guide. A day going up the Forest Park or Tianmen Mountain costs more than an ordinary day, because the ticket, cable car and elevator stack up.
How much are the individual attraction tickets in Zhangjiajie?
Typical 2026 prices: National Forest Park (Wulingyuan) ~¥228, valid 4 days and including the free in-park shuttle, Bailong Elevator ~¥65 one way, Tianzi Mountain cable car ~¥72, Yangjiajie cable car ~¥76, Tianmen Mountain ~¥278 (cable car included), Grand Canyon + Glass Bridge ~¥178 (canyon only ~¥60), Baofeng Lake ~¥110, Yellow Dragon Cave ~¥96. These change often, so check before you go. See the National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain.
How do I get from Zhangjiajie Airport (DYG) to Wulingyuan, and what does it cost?
DYG airport is very close to the city centre (~5–10 km). Into town is ~¥20–40 by bus or taxi/DiDi, around 15–20 minutes. To Wulingyuan (the park base, ~33 km away) there is a direct airport shuttle bus for ~¥30 taking ~45–60 minutes, or a taxi/DiDi for ~¥100–150. Many Wulingyuan hotels arrange a paid pickup, so confirm current fares before you go — the city has no urban rail.
