Tokyo Disney vs USJ
which theme park should you choose?

Two of Japan's biggest theme parks, in different cities — Tokyo Disney Resort with two parks in one place (the standout DisneySea + Fantasy Springs) vs Universal Studios Japan in Osaka with Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country. A clear comparison before you plan (spoiler: if you have the time, you can do both).

What to know first

Two top theme parks in different cities

Picture this — you're planning a Japan trip and you want a theme-park day, but you hit the classic fork so many travellers stall on: should you go to Tokyo Disney Resort or USJ in Osaka? These two aren't in the same city. Disney is at Maihama in Chiba, right next to Tokyo, while USJ is in Osaka, about two and a half hours apart by bullet train. Both are front-rank theme parks — packed with fun, all-out production, busy all year — but once you actually go, you can feel right away that they're two very different moods.

Let's be honest up front: this isn't a question of which one is "better," it's a question of what kind of experience you want and where your trip is based. Tokyo Disney stands out for having two parks in one place — both the classic Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea that no other Disney park has — plus the new Fantasy Springs zone. USJ stands out for Super Nintendo World, the world of Mario, and the Donkey Kong Country zone that opened in late 2024, on top of Harry Potter and the Hollywood area.

This article compares them across every dimension — location and getting there, headline draws, 2026 ticket prices, skip-the-line systems, who suits which — and, just as importantly, how to do both on one trip. Because when they're in different cities but linked by the bullet train, plenty of people choose to base in two cities and ride both.

Quick verdict

The short answer before you read on

If you have to decide right now

Already based in Tokyo / want DisneySea that no other Disney park has / love the classic Disney atmosphere / want to ride the new Fantasy Springs zone Choose Tokyo Disney — two parks in one place, both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, at Maihama about 15 minutes on the JR Keiyo line from Tokyo station, easily a full day per park.
Based in Osaka-Kansai / a Mario-Nintendo-Harry Potter fan / travelling with older kids who love games / want to ride Donkey Kong Country Choose USJ — Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country exist only here, about 11 minutes on the JR Loop from Osaka station, with a 1-Day adult ticket around ¥9,200 (2026).
Tokyo Disney Resort · Tokyo Disney

A resort with two parks in one place

The white Cinderella Castle at the heart of Tokyo Disneyland, the symbol of Tokyo Disney Resort at Maihama

Tokyo Disney has something USJ can't give you — two full parks in a single resort. There's Tokyo Disneyland, the classic Disney you see worldwide, with Cinderella Castle, parades and legendary rides, plus Tokyo DisneySea, a sea-themed park that no other Disney on the planet has. All of it sits at Maihama in Chiba, right next to Tokyo — just about 15 minutes on the JR Keiyo line from Tokyo station, then a few more minutes' walk from Maihama station into the parks.

The highlight everyone's talking about right now is Fantasy Springs, DisneySea's new zone, which opened on 6 June 2024 and brings together the worlds of Frozen, Rapunzel and Peter Pan — the resort's biggest expansion since DisneySea opened in 2001. Something this new draws huge queues, and at times you'll need to pay extra for Premier Access or a separate area-entry pass to get on the rides. If you're set on this zone, check the entry system for your chosen day first.

If you can only pick one park, DisneySea is the more unique choice — for its atmosphere, its European-port theming, and a slightly more grown-up edge on some rides, ideal for adults and anyone who's already done Disney elsewhere. Disneyland suits families with young children and anyone who wants the full classic Disney feel. And if you're already based in Tokyo, Tokyo Disney is the easiest theme park to reach.

Pros & trade-offs
Two parks in one place — classic Tokyo Disneyland + sea-themed Tokyo DisneySea
DisneySea has a character no other Disney park on earth has — its European-port theming
New Fantasy Springs zone (opened Jun 2024) — Frozen, Rapunzel, Peter Pan
Close to Tokyo — JR Keiyo from Tokyo station about 15 minutes to Maihama
The classic Disney atmosphere — great for families with kids and Disney fans alike
Dynamic ticket pricing — DisneySea adult around ¥7,900–10,900 by the day (2026)
Two parks, too much for one day — allow 2 days if you want both
Fantasy Springs gets very crowded — at times you'll need Premier Access or an area pass
Long ride queues on weekends and peak periods — arrive at opening and book ahead

Tokyo DisneySea — the park no other Disney has

USJ Osaka · Universal Studios Japan

The theme park for Mario and Nintendo fans

USJ doesn't compete with Disney on number of parks — it plays a completely different game. This is the theme park people flock to for Super Nintendo World, the world of Mario built so well you feel like you've fallen into the actual game, with the famous Mario Kart ride, plus Harry Potter and a movie-style Hollywood area. USJ is at Universal City in Osaka, about 11 minutes on the JR Loop from Osaka station to the gate.

The newest highlight is Donkey Kong Country, the zone that opened on 11 December 2024, which grew Super Nintendo World by about 70%. The star of the zone is Mine Cart Madness, an indoor mine-cart coaster inside The Golden Temple — a family-style roller coaster that's fun in a way you won't find anywhere else. If you're a gamer or travelling with older kids, this zone is the main reason to choose USJ.

One thing worth saying straight, too: USJ is one big park, not two like Disney, and the most popular zones such as Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong get extremely crowded, so you'll often need the Area Timed Entry system or an Express Pass. If your trip is already based in Osaka-Kansai and you want Mario, Donkey Kong and Harry Potter — USJ is the most direct answer.

Pros & trade-offs
Super Nintendo World — the world of Mario, with the famous Mario Kart ride, only here
Donkey Kong Country (opened Dec 2024) — the hit ride Mine Cart Madness

Close to Osaka — JR Loop from Osaka station about 11 minutes to Universal City
1-Day adult ticket around ¥9,200, child around ¥6,100 (2026) — one park, done in a day
It's one big park — no second park to switch to like Disney
The popular zones get extremely crowded — often need Area Timed Entry or Express Pass
Express Pass is sold separately, dynamically priced — clearly pricier on peak days
Summer (Jul–Aug) is hot and humid — queueing in the sun is harder than other seasons

Super Nintendo World — the world of Mario

You can also ride both parks

Tokyo Disney and USJ are in different cities, but they're linked by a ~2.5-hour bullet train. If your trip is long enough, plenty of people base in two cities and ride both. Here's how to pair them on a single trip.

🚄
Bullet train links the two cities: Tokyo → Shin-Osaka, ~2.5 hrs
The Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi service from Tokyo station to Shin-Osaka takes about two and a half hours (the fastest runs are around 2 hours 21 minutes), with several trains an hour from early morning until late at night. A reserved seat costs around ¥14,720 (~฿3,300 · 2026 prices, with up to ¥400 added in peak periods). With a JR Pass you can ride the Hikari/Kodama services for free (Nozomi costs extra). Work out whether it's worth it before you buy on the JR Pass calculator.
1
Base in Tokyo and do Tokyo Disney first
Sleep in Tokyo and ride the JR Keiyo line to Maihama in about 15 minutes. Allow one day per park, and if you want both Disneyland and DisneySea (with Fantasy Springs), allow two days. Book date-specific tickets in advance and arrive at opening. See well-placed hotels in our Tokyo hotels roundup, and plan the whole trip with our 7-day Japan itinerary.
2
Take the bullet train to Osaka and do USJ
Get off at Shin-Osaka and drop your bags. The next day, ride the JR Loop to Universal City in about 11 minutes for Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country. Allow a full day and consider an Express Pass, because the popular zones get extremely crowded. See hotels near the park in our Osaka hotels roundup and the sights around town in our Osaka attractions page.
3
Fly home from either city (an open-jaw plan)
Fly into Narita/Haneda and out of Kansai (or the reverse) so you never have to double back — saving you half a day. Leave time to explore Tokyo and Osaka too. See the big picture of Japan's theme parks in our Japan theme parks guide, and for general travel info see our Japan travel info.
The decision

Pick this park if you're…

Already based in Tokyo, or you want the DisneySea that no other Disney has — choose Tokyo Disney. About 15 minutes on the JR Keiyo line from Tokyo station gets you both parks, plus the new Fantasy Springs zone, and you can easily allow 1–2 days per park.
Based in Osaka-Kansai, or a Mario-Nintendo-Harry Potter fan — choose USJ. Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country exist only here, about 11 minutes on the JR Loop from Osaka station, and one park is done in a single day.
Travelling with young children, or you want the classic Disney atmosphere — choose Tokyo Disney. Tokyo Disneyland has Cinderella Castle and parades, ideal for families, and you can save DisneySea for a second day if you have the time.
Travelling with older kids who love games, or you want big rides in one day — choose USJ. You get Mario Kart, Mine Cart Madness at Donkey Kong Country and Harry Potter all in one park; add an Express Pass if you'd rather not wait in long lines.
Travelling with 5–7 days or more, and you're a true theme-park fan — do both. Start in Tokyo for Disney, then take the ~2.5-hour bullet train to Osaka for USJ, flying out from whichever city suits. It's the best value for anyone who wants both Disney and Universal.

Frequently asked

FAQ · Tokyo Disney vs USJ

If I only have one day, should I go to Tokyo Disney or USJ?
Let your trip base be the deciding factor. If you are already based in Tokyo, Tokyo Disney Resort at Maihama in Chiba is the easiest — the JR Keiyo line from Tokyo station takes only about 15 minutes — and if you have to pick one park, DisneySea is the one with a character no other Disney park in the world has, plus the new Fantasy Springs zone. If you are based in Osaka-Kansai, head to USJ at Universal City, about 11 minutes on the JR Loop from Osaka station, where Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country exist only here. Both parks are huge and one day isn't enough to see everything, so choose by your base and decide which zone you most want to ride first. See the overviews in our Tokyo travel guide and Osaka travel guide.
How much do tickets cost at Tokyo Disney and USJ?
Both use dynamic pricing that changes by the day of entry. A 1-Day DisneySea ticket for an adult starts at around ¥7,900 and rises to about ¥10,900 on busy days (the most common base price is around ¥9,900). At USJ, a 1-Day Studio Pass in 2026 is around ¥9,200 for an adult and around ¥6,100 for a child (ages 4-11), and it also moves with the date. For both, buy a date-specific ticket online in advance so you don't have to queue at the gate, and always check the price for your chosen day on the official site first. See the big picture of Japan's theme parks in our Japan theme parks guide.
Where are Super Nintendo World and Donkey Kong Country?
They are only at USJ in Osaka, not at Tokyo Disney. Super Nintendo World is the world of Mario, home to the famous Mario Kart ride, and the new Donkey Kong Country zone that opened on 11 December 2024 expanded the area by about 70%. Its headline ride is Mine Cart Madness, an indoor mine-cart coaster inside The Golden Temple. If you are set on riding Mario and Donkey Kong, you have to come to USJ, and you should check the Area Timed Entry system or an Express Pass for this zone in advance because it gets extremely crowded. Plan your time in the city with our things to do in Osaka guide.
How is DisneySea different from Disneyland, and what is Fantasy Springs?
Tokyo Disney Resort has two parks side by side. Tokyo Disneyland is the classic Disney park you see worldwide, with Cinderella Castle and parades, ideal for families and young children. Tokyo DisneySea is sea-themed, with an atmosphere and rides no other Disney park has, leaning on beautiful zones and a slightly older skew on some rides. Its newest zone, Fantasy Springs, opened on 6 June 2024 and brings together the worlds of Frozen, Rapunzel and Peter Pan — a zone with very long queues, where at times you'll need Premier Access or a separate area-entry pass. If you have to pick one park, DisneySea is the more unique choice. Plan the trip in our Tokyo travel guide.
Can I do both Tokyo Disney and USJ on one trip?
Easily, but bear in mind they are in different cities. Tokyo Disney is at Maihama near Tokyo, while USJ is in Osaka, and the two cities are linked by the Tokaido Shinkansen in about two and a half hours. A sensible plan is to base yourself in Tokyo and do Disney first, then take the bullet train to Osaka and do USJ. Allow a full day for each theme park (DisneySea and USJ are both huge) and book date-specific tickets for both in advance. Work out whether a JR Pass is worth it before you buy, since the cross-city bullet train may tip the balance. Take a look at our JR Pass calculator and 7-day Japan itinerary.
How do I book tickets and skip the lines at Tokyo Disney and USJ?
Buy date-specific tickets on each park's official site in advance, then line up before the gates open, because morning queues for the big rides are the shortest. For skipping lines, Tokyo Disney uses Premier Access, a pay-extra service for individual rides through the Tokyo Disney Resort app — buy only for the rides you really want. USJ uses Express Pass, sold separately from your ticket as a bundle (such as Express Pass 4 or 7); pick a bundle that includes Donkey Kong if you intend to ride it. Prices for both move with the date, and on weekends and peak periods queues are longer and skip-the-line passes cost more. See what to prepare in our Japan travel info.
