Sanya Without the Rush —
5 Days for Sea, Islands and Downtime

Switch bays one day at a time: clear coral water, a seaside Guanyin temple, a tropical rainforest, and a final day that's nothing but the beach, a spa and duty-free shopping before you fly. This plan is built to slow you down.

Why 5 days?

Sanya is a place that punishes rushing

Sanya isn't a checklist city. It's a resort town on the South China Sea — the place mainland Chinese fly to escape the northern winter — and its whole appeal is the slow rhythm. Picture this: walk down to the beach before the sun gets fierce, swim, eat seafood, nap through the heat of the afternoon, then go watch the sunset. That's what Sanya gives you, if you give it enough time.

This 5-day plan deliberately differs from a 4-day one by adding downtime, not extra sights. Highlights are spread out one theme per day, alternating a far-out day (an island, a rainforest) with a near-home day, and then closing with a final day that has no schedule beyond the beach, a spa and duty-free. If you have less time, the 4-day plan is the better fit.

Before you book, read our guide to Sanya's bays and beaches to decide where to stay — the bays are far apart (Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay sit 25–35 km from downtown), and your base shapes every day of this plan.

5 Days · 4 Nights Full Wuzhizhou Island Day Final Day: Beach + Spa + Duty-Free Budget ¥800–2,000/person/day

Day 1
Settle In, the Nearest Beach, and Sunset at Luhuitou
Luhuitou Park hilltop viewpoint in Sanya looking down over Sanya Bay and the city at dusk
✈️ Morning–Midday — Arrival and Check-in
Most flights from Thailand land at Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX 三亚凤凰国际机场), just 14 km west of downtown on the Sanya Bay side. There's no airport metro — the easiest way in is a DiDi or taxi: roughly ¥30–50 (~US$4–7) to downtown or Sanya Bay (about 20 minutes), ¥40–60 to Dadonghai, ¥100–140 to Yalong Bay (about 40 minutes), or ¥120–160 to Haitang Bay. Many resorts also run paid shuttles.

Don't over-program the first day — check in, drop the bags, and spend what's left getting to know your neighbourhood.

🏖️ Afternoon — The Closest Beach
Hit the beach nearest your hotel — no need to travel far. If you're staying in town, Dadonghai (大东海) is right there, walkable, with sun loungers to rent. If you're at Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay, just step out onto the resort beach. Sanya's sea is warm year-round and easy to swim in, and the late afternoon, once the sun softens, is the perfect time to ease into beach mode. Read our guide comparing every bay to pick the spot that suits you.

🌅 Evening — Sunset on the Hill
Close the first day with the city's best view — head up to Luhuitou Park (鹿回头) on the hill south of downtown, where you can take in all of Sanya Bay and the city in a single frame. It's a local favourite for sunset, with a deer statue (the source of the name) tied to a city love legend. Get up by golf cart or DiDi. More detail in our Luhuitou Park guide. Come down for seafood in town afterwards (see our Sanya food guide).
Tip: If your flight lands late, skip Luhuitou today and fit it in on another evening. On the first day, recovering from travel matters more than ticking off a viewpoint — Sanya isn't going anywhere.

Day 2
Wuzhizhou Island — the Clearest Coral Water off Haitang Bay
Wuzhizhou Island in Sanya with bright blue water and white sand seen from a hilltop viewpoint
⛴️ Morning — Get to the Island Early
Today is the island day. Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛) has Sanya's clearest coral water, sitting off Haitang Bay to the north-east. From downtown it's a 40–50 minute DiDi ride to the pier. The combined entry and round-trip ferry ticket is about ¥144 (~US$20) per person. The island is open 08:00–18:30 and boats run every 20 minutes — aim to reach the pier before 10am to dodge the queues and the midday sun.

Booking ahead on Klook or Trip.com is easier than buying on the day. Full detail in our Wuzhizhou Island guide.

🤿 Midday — Water, Coral and Views
A shuttle golf-cart loops the island, stopping at viewpoints and beaches. The water is clear enough to see coral and fish, ideal for snorkelling or a beginner's dive (intro courses run on the island). There's plenty of water sport too — jet skis, banana boats, glass-bottom boats. The favourite photo spots are the lighthouse and the "end of the world" Lover's Island on the eastern side. Spend the whole day here at an easy pace; there are restaurants and shaded rest stops.

🌇 Evening — Back to the Mainland
Catch a ferry back in the late afternoon, before the last boat. Return to town or your resort to rest, and find some fresh seafood for dinner — an island day uses a lot of energy, so an early night isn't a bad idea before tomorrow.
Tip: Water sports on the island are charged separately from the entry ticket and aren't cheap (a dive runs about ¥400–600). If you're set on diving, compare package prices on Klook in advance. If you just want clear water to swim in, you won't pay extra. Bring strong sun protection — the island sun is intense.

Day 3
West Coast — Nanshan's Guanyin Statue and Tianya Haijiao
The 108-metre Guanyin of Nanshan statue standing in the sea at the Nanshan cultural zone in Sanya
🛕 Morning — Nanshan Temple
Today swaps the sea for culture on the city's west coast. Start at the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone (南山文化旅游区) — a large seaside Buddhist park whose centrepiece is the 108-metre Guanyin of Nanshan statue, standing out in the sea with three faces, which you can climb up to on its base. Admission is ¥108–129 (~US$15–18) depending on the season; open 08:00–17:30. The grounds are huge with internal shuttle trams, so allow 2.5–3 hours. More in our Nanshan Temple guide.

🌊 Afternoon — Tianya Haijiao
On the way back, stop at Tianya Haijiao (天涯海角) — a beach scattered with giant boulders carved with the Chinese characters for "edge of the sky, corner of the sea." It's a Sanya symbol known across China and a hugely popular couples' photo spot. Stroll the shore, photograph the legendary rocks, and enjoy the easy pace and the cool sea breeze. More in our Tianya Haijiao guide.

🍤 Evening — Back to Town for Dinner
The west coast is a fair way from downtown, so DiDi back in the early evening. Tonight, try a local Hainan dish — Wenchang chicken, the poached free-range chicken served with a ginger dip, is a must at least once on this island. Or head back to the seafood strip in town.
Tip: Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao are on the opposite side of the city from Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay. If you're staying on the east side today, it's a longer journey — hiring a car with a driver for the half day may beat calling DiDi one ride at a time. Compare half-day tour prices on Klook.

Day 4 — Day Trip
Yanoda Tropical Rainforest — Trading the Sea for the Mountains
Yanoda Tropical Rainforest in Hainan with a wooden boardwalk through lush green forest and a valley waterfall
🌿 Morning — Into the Rainforest
After four days by the sea, change the scenery for some green — the Yanoda Tropical Rainforest (呀诺达) is about an hour north of Sanya, a genuine Hainan rainforest with canopy walkways, waterfalls, suspension bridges and an adventure zone. The ticket is around ¥158 (~US$22) booked online, including the sightseeing shuttle inside the park. It's open all day, and the forest air runs cooler than the city.

You can go by hired car with driver, or book a day tour with hotel pickup — easier given the distance from town. More in our Yanoda rainforest guide.

🪜 Midday — Easy Forest Walking
Yanoda has several trails, from flat boardwalks suitable for all ages to wet-foot routes (bring shoes you don't mind soaking). There are Li and Miao cultural shows, and you can dress in tribal costume for free photos. Have lunch in the park, then take the nature in slowly without any hurry.

🚗 Evening — Back to Sanya
Head back into the city in the early evening, rest, and keep dinner low-key — tomorrow is a chilled-out final day with no early start.
Day 4 alternative: If you'd rather stay by the sea than head inland, swap in an offshore island, or, if you're travelling with kids, the Atlantis Aquaventure water park at Haitang Bay is a fun full day. See all the options in our Sanya day-trips guide.

Day 5 — Slow Day
A Slow Beach Morning, a Spa, and Duty-Free Before You Fly
Yalong Bay in Sanya with a long white-sand beach, clear blue water and a row of palm trees along the shore
🏖️ Morning — One Last Beach
The final day has no agenda except soaking up the sea one more time — down to the beach in front of your hotel early, before the sun gets strong, for a last swim, a lounger and a cold coconut. If you're at Yalong Bay, the city's best swimming beach, this is the morning that pays off. Let yourself slow right down; there's nowhere far to be.

💆 Late Morning–Afternoon — A Spa to Recharge
Before flying out, treat yourself to a spa. Nearly every Sanya resort has one in-house, and there are good standalone spas across town and around the bays, ranging from a straightforward Thai or Chinese massage to a full resort treatment. A proper massage after four days of touring is the best possible way to close the trip. Just line up the spa time against your flight, and leave room for the airport run.

🛍️ Afternoon–Evening — Duty-Free Before You Fly
End on a shopping note — the CDF mall at Haitang Bay (海棠湾免税城) is the largest duty-free complex in the world, open 10:00–22:00, with cosmetics, perfume, bags, watches and designer brands at tax-free prices. Travellers flying out of Hainan can buy within an annual quota, using their passport and outbound flight details.

Most purchases are sent to the airport pickup counter, so you don't have to haul anything around. Plan to finish shopping before your airport check-in time. Read the full how-to and quota rules in our Sanya duty-free shopping guide.
Closing tip: Allow at least 2.5–3 hours at Sanya Phoenix Airport before an international flight. If you bought duty-free for airport collection, you'll need to pick it up before check-in, so leave time to walk to the counter. The airport is near Sanya Bay — if you're at Haitang Bay today, budget ~45–50 minutes for the drive.

Which Bay to Stay In and How to Get Around

🏨
Which Bay for This Plan
Sanya's bays are far apart — pick one and stay put rather than moving around:

Dadonghai — in town, walkable, best value for first-timers
Yalong Bay — best swimming beach, luxury resorts, quiet (the ideal place for that Day 5 morning)
Haitang Bay — newest and most upscale, home to Atlantis and the duty-free mall, but furthest out
Sanya Bay — a long sunset beach near the airport at a mid-range price
Luxury / families: Yalong Bay & Haitang Bay 5-star resorts Value / first-timers: in-town hotels · Dadonghai · Sanya Bay See the Top 10 Sanya hotels →
🚕
Getting Around Sanya — No Metro
Sanya has no metro; tourists move mainly by DiDi or taxi, which is cheap and easy. The options:

DiDi / taxi — flagfall ~¥10, the main way everyone gets around
City buses — ¥1–5, scan Alipay/WeChat
Tourist tram (有轨电车) — a short line near Sanya Bay
Ring high-speed rail — for east-coast day trips (Haikou / Lingshui)
Recommended: set up DiDi and link a card before you arrive, plus Alipay/WeChat Pay Navigation: Amap (高德地图) is far more accurate in China than Google Maps

Frequently Asked Questions

Before Your 5-Day Sanya Trip

Is 5 days enough for Sanya?
Five days is the comfortable length — enough for Wuzhizhou Island, the west-coast culture sites, a rainforest day trip, and still real time to lie on a beach and have a spa without rushing. With less time, the 4-day plan works too. Sanya is a resort town: slowing down is part of the trip, not a waste of it.
Which bay should I stay in?
Dadonghai is in town and walkable — the best value for first-timers. Yalong Bay has the best swimming beach and the luxury resorts, 25 km east. Haitang Bay is the newest and most upscale, home to Atlantis and the world's largest duty-free mall, but furthest out. Sanya Bay has a long sunset beach near the airport at a mid-range price. Pick one bay and stay put — they're far apart. Compare them in our bays and beaches guide.
How do I plan a day trip to Wuzhizhou Island?
Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛) sits off Haitang Bay. The combined entry and round-trip ferry ticket is about ¥144 (~US$20) per person. The island is open 08:00–18:30 and boats run every 20 minutes. Arrive at the pier before 10am to beat the queues and the midday heat. Book ahead on Klook or Trip.com. The water is exceptionally clear and good for snorkelling over coral. Full detail in our Wuzhizhou Island guide.
What is the best time of year to visit Sanya?
November to April is the peak dry season and the best window — warm 25–28°C, little rain, clear water (it's why mainland Chinese flee the northern winter here). May to October is hot, humid and rainy, with typhoon risk from July to September. Avoid Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and the October Golden Week, when rates jump 2–3x and the beaches are packed.
How do I get around between Sanya's beaches?
Sanya has no metro. The main way tourists move is DiDi or taxi — cheap and easy, with a flagfall around ¥10. City buses cost ¥1–5 (scan Alipay or WeChat), there's a short tourist tram near Sanya Bay, and the Hainan ring high-speed railway covers east-coast day trips. Use Amap (高德地图) instead of Google Maps. Because the bays are spread out, factor transfer time and cost into where you base yourself.
Is duty-free shopping in Sanya worth it?
Very much so if you plan ahead. The CDF mall at Haitang Bay is the largest duty-free complex in the world, open 10:00–22:00, with cosmetics, perfume, bags and watches at tax-free prices. Travellers flying out of Hainan can buy within an annual quota using their passport and outbound flight details. Most purchases are collected at the airport pickup counter, so you don't have to carry them around. See our duty-free shopping guide.
