Haitang Bay (海棠湾) is Sanya's newest and furthest-out resort bay, ~30 km to the north-east — home to Atlantis Sanya with a waterpark and aquarium built in, the world's largest CDF duty-free mall, the Wuzhizhou Island ferry pier, and a run of 5-star resorts along the beach. Best for families, shoppers and a full resort holiday.
Honestly, if Yalong Bay is Sanya's first generation of luxury resort strip, Haitang Bay is the newer one — bigger, fresher and more all-in. Haitang Bay (海棠湾) is on the far north-east side of the city, about 30 km from downtown, and it is the furthest out of all the main bays. Its coastline runs around 21.8 km, carpeted with big-name resorts in a long row. Picture a white-sand beach that stretches out of sight, a wide sea, and luxury resort towers rising at intervals — that is what people call Sanya's "national coast".
What sets Haitang Bay apart from the other bays is that it was built to be a destination in its own right, not just a place to sleep. At its heart is Atlantis Sanya, an ocean-themed resort with a waterpark and aquarium built in, and the CDF Haitang Bay duty-free mall (三亚国际免税城), the world's largest single duty-free store at around 120,000 sqm. A short way on is the Wuzhizhou Island ferry pier (蜈支洲岛), the jumping-off point for a famous diving island, and along the whole beach runs a strip of 5-star resorts such as the Grand Hyatt, Shangri-La, Rosewood, Conrad and InterContinental.
Ever had this happen — a luxury resort that's lovely and quiet, but every time you want to go anywhere it's a long drive? That's Haitang Bay exactly. The upside is that everything in the bay — the waterpark, the duty-free mall, the beach, the resorts — sits together in one area. The trade-off is that it is the furthest from downtown, the local seafood restaurants and the markets, so eating outside the resort means calling a car. That is why we point this bay at people who plan to spend the trip mostly inside the resort — especially families coming for Atlantis and duty-free shoppers.
This is the version of Sanya where everything is spacious and premium — a long beach, clear water, enormous resorts, and the sense of being inside an island resort you never have to leave.
The charm of Haitang Bay is that it feels luxurious and calm at the same time. By day the long white-sand beach is quieter than the city beaches, each resort has its own broad pool and gardens, and it's an easy walk from your room down to the sand. In the evening the golden light on the sea and the resort towers is gorgeous, and anyone here for Atlantis or the duty-free mall barely has to leave the bay all day. The pace is slower than in town — it suits people who came to genuinely rest more than to be out exploring from dawn to dusk.
If you're travelling as a family with kids, Haitang Bay is the easiest answer, because Atlantis Sanya has the Aquaventure waterpark and an aquarium built in — a full day of play without going anywhere. The kids get plenty to do, and several resorts in the bay are designed for families, with kids' pools and kids' clubs.
Haitang Bay is home to the CDF duty-free mall, the world's largest, gathering more than 650 luxury brands in one place. Stay in this bay and you can shop at leisure — many resorts are within walking distance or run a shuttle to the mall. If you're a shopper who likes to take your time choosing, this location feels very worthwhile.
This is Sanya's newest and most complete 5-star resort strip, from the Grand Hyatt to Shangri-La, Rosewood, Conrad and InterContinental — big rooms, lovely pools, strong service. If this trip is about staying somewhere luxurious without watching the budget, this is where the top-tier options cluster most tightly.
The pier for Wuzhizhou Island, the famous diving island, is in Haitang district itself. Staying in this bay makes catching the boat easiest — ideal if you want to spend a day diving over coral and clear water on the island, then come back to a resort in the same bay.
The heart of Haitang Bay — an ocean-themed resort that combines a hotel, the Aquaventure waterpark (around 200,000 sqm), The Lost Chambers aquarium (more than 86,000 marine animals, with the huge Ambassador Lagoon) and a range of restaurants in one place. The waterpark opens roughly 10:00–18:00 (closing time varies by season). You don't have to stay there to go — you can buy a day pass — and resort guests usually get access bundled into the package. Read the deep dive in our full Atlantis Aquaventure guide.
The world's largest single duty-free store, around 120,000 sqm, open since 2014, gathering more than 650 luxury brands — from watches, jewellery and bags to cosmetics, fragrance, liquor and food. Thai passport-holders entering Hainan visa-free can buy within Hainan's duty-free quota (check the current rules and quota before you go). It sits in the bay about 30 minutes from downtown, and many resorts are within walking distance or run a shuttle. Read on in our Sanya duty-free shopping guide.
The pier for the famous diving island is in Haitang district itself (Houhai Village). From the pier it's about a 15-minute boat ride to the island; boats leave roughly every 20 minutes from 08:00 to 16:00, with the last return around 17:30. A ticket including the round-trip ferry is about ¥136 (~฿680). The water here is very clear — it's a spot for diving over coral, snorkelling and pretty seaside photo points, and it makes a good full-day trip. Check the latest prices and boat times before you go. A long stretch of white sand running along the line of resorts, with clear water, gentler waves than the city beaches and fewer people — good for a morning or evening walk along the sea, and for relaxing in your resort's beach zone. One thing to know: the bay is wide and open to the sea, so it can get more seasonal seaweed drifting in than the more sheltered bays, especially in the wet season — most resorts clean the sand within their own zone. See the citywide picture in our Sanya beaches guide.
Haitang Bay is an all-resort area, so the main eating is inside the resorts, the duty-free mall and Atlantis — for local seafood, you'll drive into town.
Unlike Dadonghai or downtown, where restaurants line the streets, Haitang Bay is a resort district, so most of the eating is inside the hotels — breakfast buffets, multiple in-house restaurants, and the dining in the Atlantis zone, which ranges from Chinese and international to restaurants with an aquarium view. The upper floor of the duty-free mall also has a food and café area. Meals inside the resorts run higher than the places outside, so if you want fresh seafood at local prices you'll need to drive into town or to a seafood market. Read the overview in our full Sanya food guide.
Sanya's signatures — fresh seafood, flower crab, lobster and shellfish — are mostly in the seafood markets and restaurants in town, which are a fair way from Haitang Bay. If you want to chase a proper seafood meal, budget about 40 to 50 minutes by DiDi each way into town, or fold it into a day when you're already heading to another sight — planning ahead beats a there-and-back drive for one meal.
This is Sanya's newest and most luxurious 5-star resort strip — the top-tier options cluster along the same beach.
The upside of staying in Haitang Bay is that you get top-tier luxury resorts plus a waterpark and the duty-free mall in one bay — especially if you're travelling as a family or coming to shop. The resorts here have big rooms, lovely pools, and many have a private beach or a sea view straight from the room. Rates run well above Dadonghai or downtown, but for a trip built around staying somewhere luxurious, many people find it worth it, because you barely need to leave the bay to fill a whole day.
One thing to know: Haitang Bay is the furthest from downtown and the airport (~45–50 minutes), so budget the time and the transfer fares, and if you plan to head out for seafood or other sights often, this bay may be less convenient than an in-town base. Choose it when you genuinely want the resort to be the main point of the trip — if you'd rather walk to restaurants and markets, weigh up a bay closer to the city first.
Or jump straight to individual resort reviews in this bay:
Sanya has no metro. The main way to Haitang Bay is a taxi/DiDi or a resort shuttle, and within the bay the distances between points are fairly long, so moving by car is easiest.
10:00 — Start at the CDF duty-free mall, shopping the luxury brands before it gets busy
12:00 — Lunch at the food area on the mall's upper floor, or head back to eat at the resort
13:30 — Back to the resort for a swim at Haitang Bay beach or a relax by the pool
17:00 — A beach walk in the cool of the evening, watching the sunset over the sea and the resort towers
Haitang Bay suits a single themed full day — pick one:
An Atlantis day — into the Aquaventure waterpark from opening at 10:00, the slides all morning, a lunch break, then The Lost Chambers aquarium in the afternoon, and a wander around the resort in the evening
A Wuzhizhou Island day — to the pier early, the boat across to Wuzhizhou Island, diving over coral and snorkelling, lunch on the island, an afternoon photographing the seaside points, then the boat back in the evening
