About 1h30 by HSR from Taipei · Gateway to the Alishan Forest Railway and mountain sunrise · Taiwan's undisputed turkey rice capital · Most travelers transit through Chiayi for Alishan — but the city itself deserves a full day
Chiayi (嘉義) is a mid-sized city in southwest Taiwan, best known as the jumping-off point for Alishan National Scenic Area. The Alishan Forest Railway departs from Chiayi Station, winding 71 km up through cypress forests to reach Alishan at 2,216 m. Downtown Chiayi is Taiwan's turkey rice capital — a dish so embedded in local identity that nearly every lane has a dedicated shop. Most travelers transit through Chiayi for Alishan, but the city itself — with its art scene, night market, and food culture — deserves at least a full day.
Chiayi City is compact and walkable. Your choice of neighbourhood depends mainly on whether you're prioritising Alishan access or city exploration.

To see the famous Alishan sunrise over the sea of clouds, you must stay overnight on the mountain — Chiayi City hotels are too far to arrive in time. Consider 1 night in Alishan + 1 night in Chiayi.

Chiayi punches well above its size in food culture — turkey rice alone is worth the trip. From oyster balls to Alishan coffee, here's what to eat and where.

Local ComfortStir-fried eel with thick egg noodles in a sweet-savoury sauce — a southern Taiwan specialty also popular in Chiayi. Best eaten late at night in the central market area.
Late Night FavouriteGrown at altitude in the Alishan mountains, Taiwanese high-mountain coffee has a clean, mild acidity and gentle sweetness. Specialty cafés in Chiayi City stock the local harvest. Far superior to airport-bought Taiwan coffee.
Specialty CoffeeSilky soft tofu pudding served warm or chilled with sweet ginger syrup, peanuts, or taro balls. Chiayi has several beloved old-school douhua stalls near the train station area.
Dessert Must-TryThe legendary box lunch of the Alishan Forest Railway — pork chop or braised pork over rice in a classic wooden-style box, sold at Fenqihu Station. Eating it on the platform is a Taiwan railway tradition.

Getting to Chiayi, getting around, booking the Forest Railway, and honest tips for a smooth trip.
The HSR reaches Chiayi in ~1h30 from Taipei but the HSR station is in Taibao, ~15 minutes outside the city centre by taxi or shuttle bus. The TRA (conventional railway) drops you directly at Chiayi Station — which is where the Alishan Forest Railway departs. If catching the Forest Railway, consider arriving by TRA or taking a taxi from the HSR station to Chiayi TRA station.
The Alishan Forest Railway (阿里山森林鐵路) sells out weeks in advance during weekends, cherry blossom season (Mar–Apr), and national holidays. Book through the official Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) website or app as soon as your dates are confirmed. Walk-up tickets at the station are rarely available on popular days.
The famous Alishan sea-of-clouds sunrise occurs before 6 AM. The first Forest Railway from Chiayi departs around 6:30 AM and arrives at Alishan around 9 AM — far too late. The only way to see the sunrise is to stay overnight at an Alishan hotel and take the short internal railway to Zhushan Sunrise Station (祝山觀日出) at 4–5 AM. Book Alishan accommodation months ahead for peak periods.
Chiayi City itself is compact and flat — city buses, taxis, and rental bikes cover it well. Alishan is served by the Forest Railway and public buses (Chiayi Bus Company). Note: there is no public transport to Fenqihu other than the Forest Railway. Renting a car or joining a guided tour gives you more flexibility in the mountain area.
