Board a TRA train in Tainan at eight in the morning and by a quarter to nine you are stepping off in Chiayi. Walk to a quarter of Japanese cypress colonial buildings, visit Asia's art at the National Palace Museum South, eat the dish that no other city in the world does better, and close the day at a night market that opens at half past four — a side trip most Tainan visitors never think to take.

Many people spending two or three nights in Tainan never make the forty-minute hop to Chiayi, which is a missed opportunity. Chiayi has its own clear identity: it is the gateway to Alishan, home to the storied Alishan Forest Railway, and it produces a dish — turkey rice, 火雞肉飯 — that is so rooted in local culture that even other Taiwanese cities cannot replicate it convincingly.
A single day in Chiayi gives you variety that feels almost too good for such a short journey. Colonial Japanese timber architecture at Hinoki Village in the morning; a world-class collection of Asian art at the NPM Southern Branch before lunch; tender turkey meat in fried-shallot oil over steamed rice at midday; and a vibrant night market opening at late afternoon. If you decide you want to stay and catch the Alishan sunrise, Chiayi is your natural base.
The TRA Western Main Line is the only transport you need. Frequent departures, no advance booking, EasyCard accepted.
Tip: The historic Beimen Station (北門驛), the wooden terminal for the Alishan Forest Railway, is a five-minute walk from Chiayi's main TRA station and worth a quick photo stop on your way to Hinoki Village.
This sequence puts the museum in the morning when crowds are thin, lunch at the peak hour for turkey rice, and the night market at its liveliest in the late afternoon.
Three things to avoid: (1) Do not attempt the Alishan sunrise as a day trip from Tainan — mountain trains leave Chiayi from around 05:00, which means a 04:00 departure from Tainan. Stay overnight instead. (2) Avoid city buses during the 10:00–12:00 tourist rush on weekends — they fill up quickly; take a taxi instead. (3) Do not eat a full meal before the night market — the best stalls at Wenhua Road only run from 16:30 to 20:00, so save room.
Chiayi's defining dish. Shredded turkey, fried-shallot oil, white rice. Over 300 stalls compete for the title of best in the city. NT$40–60 a bowl.
Braised fish head in a clay pot with shacha sauce and vegetables. Rich, warming and deeply local. A full meal in itself for about NT$150–250.
Silky almond-scented pudding in clear syrup — Chiayi's most beloved dessert. Served cold or warm. The perfect cool-down after a full day walking.
Chiayi sits in a major tea-growing area. Traditional fermented tea, once the staple drink of the aboriginal Tsou people, is served in the Hinoki Village cafés. Hard to find elsewhere.
Pork casing filled with seasoned sticky rice instead of minced meat, grilled and drizzled with sweet-savory sauce and garlic. NT$25–40 at the night market.
| Item | Details | Approx. Cost |

Spend less: Switch to a local train (NT$87 each way) and skip the museum — spend the extra time in Hinoki Village and the night market — and the budget falls to around NT$700–800 per person.
A day trip from Tainan covers the city highlights comfortably. But if the Alishan sunrise or the Alishan Forest Railway is calling, one night in Chiayi means you can catch the 05:00 mountain train without rushing.
