Save 50–70% — Stay in the City, Day-Trip the Mountain

HSR from Taipei in 1.5 hrs · NT$1,080 · Alishan Forest Railway depot here · NT$1,500 hotel vs NT$5,000+ on the mountain — Chiayi is the answer most visitors overlook.

The Case for Chiayi

The City Most Travellers Just Pass Through Is Actually the Smartest Base on the Island

Most visitors treat Chiayi as a transfer point — grab the forest railway ticket and rush up the mountain. But unless you have a specific reason to sleep at 2,200 metres, basing yourself in Chiayi city and day-tripping to Alishan is smarter in almost every way.

Chiayi sits at just 100 metres above sea level. That gap means reliable mobile signal, two rotating night markets, restaurants that actually compete for your business, and a hotel bed that costs a fraction of what you would pay inside the national park. The city is also the sole departure point for the Alishan Forest Railway, which fully reopened in July 2024 after 15 years of post-typhoon repairs — a genuinely scenic journey you can do one-way up and bus back down.

Getting There

Taipei to Chiayi, then Chiayi up to Alishan

🚄 Taipei → Chiayi

  • HSR (THSR) — Taipei Main Station to Chiayi HSR Station: approx. 1.5 hours · fare around NT$1,080 standard seat, or NT$840 with an Early Bird 35% discount booked in advance
  • Free shuttle bus — From Chiayi HSR Station, a complimentary BR Bus runs to central Chiayi TRA Station in about 20 minutes
  • TRA train — Budget option at around NT$400–480 but takes 2.5–4 hours depending on whether you catch a Tze-Chiang express or a local service

🌲 Chiayi → Alishan

  • 🚌Bus 7322 / 7329 (most popular) — Departs from outside Chiayi TRA Station. Fare NT$240 cash (NT$211 EasyCard). Journey time 2.5 hours. Departures roughly at 06:30 · 08:30 · 10:00 · 12:10 (verify current timetable)
  • 🚂Alishan Forest Railway — The full scenic route: 3–3.5 hours, reopened July 2024 after 15 years. Book at afrts.forest.gov.tw — seats sell out fast, especially during cherry blossom season (March–April)
🚂

Forest Railway fully operational: After Typhoon Morakot destroyed sections of the line in 2009, the Chiayi–Zhushan main line fully reopened in July 2024. The dedicated Alishan Express runs daily from January 2025. Tip: take the Forest Railway up for the scenery, then ride the bus back down to save time.

Ancient cypress forest shrouded in morning mist on Alishan Mountain, Taiwan
Day Trip Plan

One Perfect Day on Alishan from a Chiayi Base

Leave at dawn, reach the misty forest by 08:00, and be back in time for Turkey Rice at the night market.

🚌
05:30–06:00
Board the bus in Chiayi
Bus 7322 departs from outside Chiayi TRA Station. Fare NT$240. The 2.5-hour ride winds up dramatic mountain switchbacks — bring water, and consider motion-sickness tablets if you're sensitive.
🌿
08:00–09:30
Arrive — Plum Garden & Sister Pond
Morning mist clings to the canopy at this hour; the light is magical. Walk the Plum Garden Loop (30 min) and the Sister Pond boardwalk (20 min) before tour groups arrive. If you are here in March–April, cherry blossoms frame the path.
🌲
09:30–11:30
Shenlin Trail — Forest of Giants
The boardwalk through the Sacred Tree area passes cypress trunks over 2,000 years old. The loop is about 2 km on flat wooden planks — calm, cloud-filtered light turns this into one of the most photographed stretches in Taiwan.
🍱
11:30–13:00
Lunch — Alishan Railway Bento
Restaurants near the park's main station sell the famous Alishan Bento Box — braised pork or chicken on rice, NT$100–150. Arrive before noon or queue for 20 minutes. Outdoor seating overlooks the forest.
🚃
13:00–15:30
Park Branch Train + Zhaoping
Ride the narrow-gauge branch railway inside the park up to Zhaoping Station, then walk the Chushan Trail back down past Alishan Shrine — about 2 km of gentle downhill through forest. Far quieter than the main paths.
🚌
16:00–18:30
Bus back to Chiayi
Catch the 16:00 return bus from Alishan Transit Station. You will be back in Chiayi by around 18:30 — plenty of time to freshen up and head out to the Wenhua Night Market for Turkey Rice.
⚠️

The sunrise requires an overnight stay: If watching the sunrise from Alishan's Observation Platform is your primary goal, you must sleep inside the park. The special Sunrise Train departs around 04:30 from Alishan Station — there is no way to make this from Chiayi on the same morning.

8 City Highlights

Chiayi Has More Going for It Than Just the Mountain

Stay two nights and spend your first morning exploring — Chiayi rewards the curious.

Top Pick

Hinoki Village 檜意森活村

Twenty-nine Japanese-era cypress timber houses built in 1914 for the forestry administration, beautifully restored into cafés, craft shops and a small museum. The scent of hinoki wood still hangs in the air. Free entry; a 15-minute walk from Chiayi TRA Station.

Culture

National Palace Museum Southern Branch

The southern extension of Taipei's famous NPM, but focused on Asian art across South, Southeast and East Asia. The architecture alone is worth the visit. Budget 2–3 hours; most international travellers find it less crowded and more spacious than the Taipei original.

Food

Wenhua Road Night Market 文化夜市

One of the best night markets in central-south Taiwan, open almost every evening. Must-eat: Chiayi Turkey Rice (雞肉飯), Milkfish soup, grilled corn and taro balls. Buzzing from 18:00 — arrive by 18:30 for the freshest spread before queues grow.

Food

Wenchang Night Market 文昌夜市

Alternates with Wenhua on a rotating schedule and tends to draw more locals than tourists. Less foot traffic, more authentic pricing. Signature dishes: 碗粿 (steamed rice cake), old-style Turkey Rice and a wide spread of Taiwanese desserts.

Nature

Chiayi Botanical Garden

A tranquil lakeside garden wrapped in century-old trees — perfect for a quiet morning walk before catching the mountain bus. Free, open all day, and refreshingly crowd-free even on weekends.

Architecture

Chiayi Performing Arts Center

A striking contemporary building designed by Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto. The surrounding public plazas are great for evening photography. Worth a 30-minute wander after dinner.

Tea District

Boyao Tea & Coffee District

A compact neighbourhood of Japanese-influenced tea houses and third-wave coffee shops popular with Chiayi locals. A good spot to slow down on your second afternoon — browse the ceramics, try a cold-brew oolong and watch the city at its own pace.

Heritage

Cypress Forest Park

A small urban park planted with hinoki cypress in memory of the era when Alishan's forests were systematically logged. A short 20–30 minute walk; it gives you a taste of the forest canopy without leaving the city — ideal if your Alishan day is rained out.

When You Should Sleep on the Mountain Instead

Sunrise Seekers

You Want the Alishan Sunrise

The Alishan sunrise — watching the sun climb above an endless sea of cloud from the Observation Platform — is one of Taiwan's signature experiences. The special Sunrise Train departs around 04:30 from Alishan Station. You simply cannot catch it from Chiayi. If this is your priority, at least one night on the mountain is non-negotiable.

Honeymoon Upgrade

You Want a Mountain-View Room

If budget is no object and romance is the goal, waking up to a window full of cloud forest in Alishan Hotel or Alishan Gou Hotel is a genuinely special experience. The hushed mornings, the cold air and the mist rolling through the window are not reproducible in the city below.

FAQ

Before You Plan Your Chiayi + Alishan Trip

Why is Chiayi a better base than staying on Alishan Mountain?
Hotels in Chiayi cost NT$1,500–2,500 per night compared with NT$4,000–8,000+ on the mountain. The city has two rotating night markets and far more dining variety. The HSR connects you back to Taipei in 1.5 hours. The only genuine trade-off is missing the Alishan sunrise — which requires sleeping inside the national park.
How do you get from Chiayi to Alishan?
Two options: (1) Bus 7322 or 7329 from outside Chiayi TRA Station, NT$240 cash (NT$211 EasyCard), 2.5 hours. (2) The Alishan Forest Railway — scenic 3 to 3.5-hour ride, fully reopened since July 2024. Book tickets in advance at afrts.forest.gov.tw; they sell out fast during cherry blossom season and public holidays.
Is the Alishan Forest Railway running again?
Yes. The full Chiayi–Zhushan main line reopened in July 2024 after a 15-year closure caused by Typhoon Morakot in 2009. A dedicated Alishan Express train has run daily since January 2025. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead during the March–April cherry blossom period and Golden Week holidays.
Can you see the Alishan sunrise from a Chiayi base?
No. The first bus leaves Chiayi around 05:30 and arrives at Alishan at about 08:00, well after sunrise. Watching the sunrise requires sleeping in the park and catching the Sunrise Train departing around 04:30. If sunrise is your priority, plan at least one night on the mountain — ideally two nights in Chiayi plus one inside the park.
What else is there to do in Chiayi city?
More than most people expect. Hinoki Village is a beautifully preserved Japanese-era cypress estate, now home to cafés and craft shops. The National Palace Museum Southern Branch focuses on Asian art from across the continent and is often less crowded than the Taipei original. The Wenhua Night Market is one of the best in central Taiwan, and the Boyao tea district is a lovely afternoon detour.
How far is Chiayi from Taipei?
About 1.5 hours on the High Speed Rail (HSR). A standard seat from Taipei Main Station to Chiayi HSR Station costs around NT$1,080, or NT$840 with the Early Bird 35% discount. A free shuttle bus runs from the HSR station to central Chiayi TRA Station in about 20 minutes. Total door-to-door time from Taipei is roughly 2 hours.
