About This Trip

A plan you can follow on foot — no car, no rush

Tainan is a genuinely walkable city — the historic center is packed with ancient temples, Japanese-era shophouses, and legendary food stalls that have been here since your great-grandparents' time. 3 days and 2 nights is the sweet spot: Day 1, head straight to Anping to see the Dutch fort and the surreal Tree House, then stroll back for street food on Guohua Street. Day 2, loop through the old town — Chihkan Tower, the Confucius Temple, the 1932 Hayashi Department Store — and finish at whichever night market is open that evening. Day 3, a slow morning on Shennong Street, a browse through Yongle Market, and a farewell bowl of danzai noodles from a recipe that's been unchanged since 1895. You'll go home full in every sense.

Day-by-Day Schedule

Hour-by-hour itinerary for all 3 days

DAY
1
Anping · Dutch Fort · Tree House
AM 09:00
Arrive in Tainan + check in near ChihkanFrom Taipei, the HSR takes about 90 minutes (NT$1,350). The HSR station is 30 minutes from the city center — take the shuttle bus (NT$25). Checking in near the Chihkan area is ideal: everything you need is within walking distance.
AM 10:30
Anping Old Street + Anping FortTake bus 88 or 99 from Tainan Station (NT$18, about 30 min). Anping Fort (安平古堡) was built by the Dutch in 1624 — the oldest fort in Taiwan. Admission NT$70. Stroll Old Street afterward for shrimp paste crackers, fish-shaped snacks, and taro ice cream.
PM 13:00
Lunch + Anping Tree HouseGrab lunch in the Anping area — plenty of fresh shrimp noodle spots. The Tree House (安平樹屋) is just a 5-minute walk away: an old colonial warehouse where massive banyan roots have taken over the entire building. Stunning for photos. Admission NT$70 combined with the fort.
PM 16:30
Back to town + street food on Guohua Street (國華街)Guohua Street is Tainan's street-food heartland. Must-try: milk tea with tapioca, hot or cold tofu pudding, fish porridge, oyster fritters. It's walkable from your hotel — no taxi needed.
PM 19:00
Rest / make reservations for popular spotsTainan doesn't shut down early — many restaurants are open until near midnight. If you're planning to hit the legendary Danzai noodles on Day 3, check their hours in advance (the original shop closes in the afternoon, around 14:00–17:00).
DAY
2
Old Town · Chihkan Tower · Night Market
AM 08:30
Breakfast at the morning market + traditional pork congeeMorning markets in the old-town area open as early as 5 am. Try: Tainan-style fish porridge · fried banana · hot soy milk. A full meal is under NT$100 — way cheaper than any café.
AM 10:00
Chihkan Tower (赤崁樓) + Confucius TempleChihkan Tower is another Dutch fort, built in 1653. The nine stone turtles carrying inscribed tablets inside are pure Instagram gold. Admission NT$70. Taiwan's oldest Confucius Temple (台南孔廟) is just a 10-minute walk away and free to enter.
PM 13:00
Hayashi Department Store (林百貨) + old-town photo walkThis Japanese-era department store was built in 1932 and is still in operation. The top floor has a great view and good coffee. The surrounding streets are lined with beautiful colonial-era buildings — perfect for photos.
PM 15:30
Rest + prepare for the night marketCheck which market is open that evening — Huayuan (花園) opens Thu/Sat/Sun · Dadong (大東) opens Mon/Tue/Fri · Wusheng (武聖) opens Wed/Sat. Don't guess; they rotate and there's no overlap.
PM 18:30
Tainan night market (per the rotation schedule)Tainan's night markets are bigger than most visitors expect. Must-try here: Tainan-style oyster (not fried — smothered in glutinous starch sauce, completely different from Taipei) · bubble tea · pork rice noodles · rice sausage. Prices are nearly half of Shilin in Taipei.
DAY
3
Art Street · Old Market · Legendary Danzai
AM 08:00
Shennong Street (神農街) in the morning calmThe most beautiful indie street in Tainan. Quiet in the morning, coffee shops start opening at 8 am. The warm brick-red walls and faded wooden doors photograph themselves — you don't need to frame anything extra.
AM 10:00
Yongle Market (永樂市場) + last-minute souvenirsA Japanese-era fabric and fresh produce market. Upper floor has fabric stalls and local crafts; ground floor has prepared foods and snacks. Good souvenirs: turtle-shaped egg cakes, peanut brittle, oolong tea.
NOON 11:30
Danzai noodles (度小月擔仔麵) — the original since 1895The original shop is on Zhongzheng Road (中正路). A small bowl is NT$60 — think of it as a snack. Silky prawn broth, minced pork, salted egg. It's simple, and every bite tells you why it's been here for 130 years.
PM 13:30
Head back to TaipeiShuttle bus to the HSR station costs NT$25 and takes about 30 minutes. The HSR back to Taipei is 90 minutes. If you have time to spare, grab a coffin bread (棺材板) before boarding — you've earned it.

Practical Tips

5 things worth knowing before you go

🌙
Always check the night market rotation first
Huayuan (花園) opens Thu/Sat/Sun · Dadong (大東) opens Mon/Tue/Fri · Wusheng (武聖) opens Wed/Sat. Go on the wrong day and there'll be nothing there — no guessing, always check.
🚌
Tourist Buses 88/99 save a lot of money
Tourist buses cost NT$18 per ride and connect Tainan Station with Anping and the main sights. Buy a Day Pass (NT$100) if you're making multiple trips. You don't need a taxi every time.
🏡
The Chihkan area is the best base for 3 days
You can walk to Chihkan Tower, the Confucius Temple, Guohua Street, Shennong Street, and Yongle Market — all within 15 minutes. Saves a lot on taxis. See 3 hotels near Tainan TRA Station →
🌡
It's much hotter than Taipei — pack sun protection
Tainan is in the south of Taiwan. May–September temperatures hit 33–36°C. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and stay hydrated. October–April is much more comfortable for sightseeing.
🍜
Eat breakfast seriously — the best food sells out early
Many iconic Tainan shops make only 200 bowls a day then close. Arrive after 10 am and you may be too late. This is especially true for the classic danzai noodle shops that close in the afternoon before reopening for dinner.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ · Common questions answered

What's the fastest way to get to Tainan from Taipei?
Take the HSR (High Speed Rail) from Taipei Station to Tainan HSR Station — about 90–110 minutes, NT$1,350. From the HSR station, take the shuttle bus (NT$25) for another 30 minutes into the city. Direct buses from Taipei take 4–5 hours and really aren't worth it.
Which days are Tainan's night markets open?
Three markets rotate — Huayuan (花園) opens Thu/Sat/Sun · Dadong (大東) opens Mon/Tue/Fri · Wusheng (武聖) opens Wed/Sat. Check which one is open on your specific day and plan accordingly — they never overlap.
Is 2 days enough, or do I need 3?
2 days is fine if you just want the highlights (Anping + old town). 3 days is recommended if you want to eat your way through the city without feeling rushed. Tainan is very walkable — the more time you have, the more hidden gems you'll stumble upon.
How much does a 3-day 2-night Tainan trip cost?
Budget around NT$8,000–11,000 per person · HSR round-trip NT$2,700 · 2 nights mid-range accommodation NT$3,000–5,000 · street food 3 meals/day NT$400–600/day · attraction admission NT$400–600 total · souvenirs at your discretion.
When is the best time to visit Tainan?
October to April has the best weather — cool with clear skies. May to September is hot and humid, sometimes hitting 36°C; you can still sightsee but it's tiring in the midday sun. Avoid Chinese New Year and long public holidays when Taiwanese domestic tourists fill every corner of the city.
What food is absolutely unmissable in Tainan?
Top 5 must-tries: Danzai noodles (recipe unchanged since 1895) · Coffin bread (棺材板), deep-fried toast stuffed with creamy filling · Tainan-style oyster (topped with glutinous starch sauce — very different from Taipei's version) · Tainan bubble tea · Beef soup (牛肉湯), fresh beef cooked tableside with scalding broth · full food guide here
