5 Ways to See
the Alishan Sunrise Compared

Alishan at dawn is one of Taiwan's best experiences — but only if you choose the right approach. A 1-day tour from Taipei will miss sunrise entirely. Here's the full comparison.

5 Ways
All options compared
NT$2,800–15,000
Total cost range / person
2,200 m
Zhushan altitude
⚠️ Most important fact: Zhushan Sunrise Platform requires arriving at 4–5 am. A day tour from Taipei arrives at Alishan around 9–10 am — the sunrise was 4–5 hours ago. You must spend at least one night inside the park to see it.

Find Your Right Way

Each option suits a different traveller profile. Get the overview first, then read the detail.

🏨

Easiest / No planning required

Klook/KKday Overnight 2D1N — NT$5,500–9,000/person. Includes hotel, transport, guide, and breakfast. Best for first-timers.

💰

Cheapest / Confident DIY traveller

HSR + Bus #7322 — NT$2,800–5,000 transport only (hotel extra). Needs advance planning but lowest cost.

🚗

Most flexible / Groups of 3–4

Private Car Charter — NT$10,000–15,000/car. Split among 3–4 travellers, per-head cost drops to NT$2,500–5,000 with full itinerary control.

Worst for sunrise

1-day tour from Taipei — Arrives at 9–10 am, misses sunrise completely. Fine for the forest park, not for the sunrise experience.

Why overnight is non-negotiable

Why Sunrise Requires Staying the Night

Zhushan Sunrise Platform sits at 2,451 m. The Zhushan Forest Railway departs Zhaoping Station at around 3:30–4:30 am to get visitors to the viewpoint before first light. Sunrise is between 5:30–6:30 am depending on the season. The journey from Taipei takes a minimum of 4–4.5 hours — making it physically impossible to catch the sunrise on a day tour unless you left Taipei at midnight, when no public transport runs.

Some booking platforms list "Alishan Sunrise Day Trip" — read the small print. Most 1-day tours from Taipei visit the Sacred Tree Trail, Forest Railway, and Fenqihu Old Street, which are genuinely wonderful but are not the Zhushan sunrise viewpoint.

⚠️ Lunar New Year Blackout (approx. Feb 14–21): Hotels inside the park close to general tourists. Zhushan Forest Railway: Schedules change after typhoons and during maintenance — always confirm at Zhaoping Station the evening before. If the train isn't running, the walk up takes 40–50 min.

Option 1 — Not recommended for sunrise

1-Day Tour from Taipei — Beautiful Forest, No Sunrise

Alishan Day Trip from Taipei
Klook / KKday · 12–14 hours

Verdict: 1-day tours from Taipei marketed as "Alishan" typically cover the Sacred Tree Trail, Giant Cypress Forest, Forest Railway station, and Fenqihu Old Street — genuinely impressive. But they are not sunrise tours. Coaches depart at 5–6 am and arrive at Alishan around 9–10 am; the Zhushan sunrise was hours ago. Combined with a 12–14 hour round trip, you arrive home exhausted with beautiful forest memories but no golden sky.

🌳 Beautiful forest ⛔ No sunrise 😫 12+ hour exhaustion 💰 NT$1,500–2,500
⚠️ Honest disclosure: If your goal is the sunrise, do not book this. If your goal is to visit the forest park without an overnight stay, a day tour is perfectly good value.
🌅
Klook / KKday Overnight 2D1N
All-Inclusive · Stay in the park

Verdict: The easiest option for first-timers and our top recommendation for most travellers. NT$5,500–9,000/person covers everything — return transport from Taipei, accommodation inside the national scenic area, breakfast, English-speaking guide, and a 4 am wake-up call for the Zhushan sunrise. No logistics to figure out. The trade-off is a fixed schedule shared with your group.

🌅 Real sunrise 🛌 Hotel included 🇬🇧 English guide 👍 Best for first-timers
Options 3 & 4

HSR DIY and Private Car Charter

🚆
HSR + Bus #7322 DIY
Cheapest · Flexible · Needs planning

Verdict: The cheapest way to reach Alishan independently. Take the THSR from Taipei to Chiayi (approx. 1.5 hrs), then Alishan Bus #7322 from Chiayi train station up the mountain (2.5–3 hrs). Total transport cost approximately NT$1,000–1,200/person each way, plus park entrance NT$300 and Zhushan train NT$100–150. Book accommodation inside the park well in advance — 3–6 months during peak season. Full DIY freedom once you're there.

💰 Cheapest NT$2,800+ 🗺 High flexibility 📖 Plan ahead 🚆 No car needed

Route: Taipei → (THSR 1.5 hrs) → Chiayi → (Bus #7322 from train station, 2.5–3 hrs) → Alishan Station. From Alishan, board the Zhushan line at 3:30–4:30 am for the sunrise platform.

🚗
Private Car Charter
From Taipei or Chiayi · Maximum flexibility

Verdict: The most flexible option — book a charter from Taipei or Chiayi at NT$10,000–15,000/car. Split among 3–4 people the per-head cost is NT$2,500–5,000. The driver brings you to the park, you stay overnight, and the car picks you up after sunrise. Stop at Fenqihu for a famous lunch bento on the way up. No bus timetables, no rush. Ideal for families with children or elderly, photographers who want total freedom.

👑 Premium 📅 Maximum flexibility 👨‍👩‍👧 Family/Group 💰 Worth it at 3–4 pax
Option 5

Small Group from Chiayi — Mid-price, Intimate

👫
Small Group Tour from Chiayi
KKday / Klook · 8–12 pax · 2D1N

Verdict: A good middle ground between the all-inclusive Klook tour (pricier) and the DIY route (needs planning). Small-group tours from Chiayi run 8–12 people at NT$4,500–7,000/person including accommodation, guide, transport from Chiayi, and the Zhushan sunrise hike. Groups are smaller than big-bus tours, giving a more personal experience. Good option if you're already based in southern Taiwan or flying into Chiayi.

🌅 Real sunrise 🤝 Small group 8–12 💰 NT$4,500–7,000 🛌 Hotel included
🏨 Recommended hotels inside the park: For DIY stays, book well ahead. Top picks: Alishan House (walking distance to Sunrise Platform) · Alishan Gou Hotel (forest views) · Shermuh Alishan (resort style)
🌸 Cherry Blossom Season (Mar–Apr): Alishan is at its most beautiful but extremely crowded. Book everything 3–6 months in advance. Prices increase 30–50%.
Decision Matrix

Which Option for Your Traveller Type

There is no single best option — it depends on your priorities.

🧍

Solo Traveller / First Time in Taiwan

Choose Klook/KKday Overnight 2D1N. Easiest, no planning required, English guide included, chance to meet other travellers. Best value for the convenience.

👫

Couple / Group of 2–3

Choose HSR DIY + hotel booking or Small Group from Chiayi. More personal than big bus tours, reasonable cost, chance to linger at your own pace.

👨‍👩‍👧

Family with Children or Elderly

Choose Private Car Charter. Maximum flexibility, no rushing to catch buses, stop whenever needed. Per-head cost is comparable to small-group tours when split 3–4 ways.

📷

Photographer / Sunrise-Focused

Choose HSR DIY + stay 2–3 nights. Maximum flexibility to try multiple mornings if the first is clouded over. Adjust your sunrise spot, linger as long as you want.

🎒

Budget Backpacker

Choose HSR DIY + basic guesthouse in or near the park. B&Bs outside the national scenic area are cheaper. Total trip budget NT$3,500–5,000/person including transport and accommodation.

Pack List for 4 am Zhushan

What to Bring for the Sunrise Climb

Alishan sits at 2,200 m. At 4 am it is significantly colder than Taipei, even in summer. Don't underpack.

🧥
Warm jacket or windbreaker
4–6 am on Zhushan is 8–15°C even in June. Winter months drop to 2–5°C. Layering works best — you warm up quickly on the walk but the platform is exposed.
🔦
Torch / phone flashlight
The path up to Zhushan at 4 am is very dark. If the Forest Railway isn't running and you walk up, a dedicated torch is better than relying on your phone screen.
💧
Water and snacks
Park shops and cafes are closed before 5 am. Buy water and snacks from the supermarket in the park or convenience stores in Chiayi the evening before.
📱
Power bank and camera
Cold air drains phone batteries faster than normal. The Alishan sunrise is a rare moment — bring a power bank and make sure your camera's memory card is empty.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Alishan Sunrise

Will a 1-day tour from Taipei let me see the Alishan sunrise?
No. Day tours from Taipei depart at 5–6 am and arrive at Alishan around 9–10 am — the sunrise was 4–5 hours ago. To see the sunrise at Zhushan Sunrise Platform you must spend at least one night inside the park and wake at 3–4 am for the train or walk. Day tours are excellent for the forest park experience but are not sunrise tours.
What if it's cloudy — is the Alishan sunrise still worth it?
Alishan sits at 2,200 m and cloud or mist is normal, especially May–October (rainy/typhoon season). Even on overcast mornings the "sea of clouds" below the peak is dramatic in its own way. November–January (winter) has the clearest skies and highest probability of a vivid sunrise. For serious photography, book 2–3 nights so you have spare mornings if the first is clouded over.
Is the Zhushan Forest Railway sunrise train still running?
The Zhushan line operates but schedules change frequently — especially after typhoons or during seasonal maintenance. Always check the current timetable at Zhaoping Station or the Alishan Forest Recreation Area website the evening before. If the train isn't running, the walk up to the platform takes 40–50 minutes on a well-marked path. Bring a torch.
Is Alishan during Lunar New Year blacked out for tourists?
Yes. Around Lunar New Year (approximately February 14–21) the hotels inside the park are largely closed to general tourists or fully block-booked by special groups. Prices spike dramatically and crowds are extreme. Avoid this window, or if you must go, book more than 3–6 months in advance and expect premium pricing.
What is the best month to visit Alishan for the sunrise?
November–January (winter): Clearest skies, best sunrise probability, cold (2–10°C at night). March–April (cherry blossom): Most beautiful scenery but extremely crowded — book 3–6 months ahead. Avoid June–September: Rainy and typhoon season, cloud cover makes sunrise unlikely most days.
How much does the HSR + bus DIY route cost in total?
Approximate costs per person, one way: THSR Taipei–Chiayi NT$700–750 · Bus #7322 Chiayi–Alishan NT$253 · Park entrance fee NT$300 · Zhushan train NT$100–150. Round-trip transport excluding accommodation comes to approximately NT$2,800–3,000/person. Accommodation inside the park ranges from NT$1,500 (basic guesthouse) to NT$5,000+ per night.
Book before it sells out
