Getting from Xi'an airport (XIY)
into the city without the stress

The airport sits 25 km out of town. The bus is cheap and drops you in the hotel districts, Metro Line 14 is the cheapest but needs one transfer, and the taxi is simple — if you know the one thing to watch. Everything compared, with real fares, before you leave Arrivals.

First things first

Get to know Xi'an airport before you land

Xi'an has one main airport: Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY, 西安咸阳国际机场), sitting northwest of the city about 25 km from the Bell Tower in the centre. That doesn't sound far, but because the route runs along expressways the real journey takes 40–60 minutes by car, and an airport bus making several stops can take 70–96 minutes. The first thing worth knowing before you even leave the plane is which terminal you land at — because a brand-new Terminal 5 opened in early 2025 and split the flights up clearly.

T5
Terminal 5 (new)
opened February 2025

The new flagship terminal, larger than T1, T2 and T3 combined. It handles all international flights, including those from Thailand, plus major carriers such as China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines. If you fly direct from Bangkok, this is where you'll land.

IATA code: XIY
Serves: International flights + major carriers
Taxi: Ground Transportation Center, Floor 1
Metro: Line 14 (Airport West / 机场西 station)
T2 / T3
Terminals 2 and 3
domestic flights

These serve mostly domestic routes within China. If you connect from another Chinese city (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu) you may arrive here instead. The bus stops and taxi rank are in a different building from T5 — follow the signs carefully.

Serves: Domestic flights
Taxi (T2): Outside Gate 213, Floor 1
Taxi (T3): Ground Transportation Center, Floor 1
Linked: Free inter-terminal shuttle
Check before you go: after T5 opened, the layout of pickup points still shifts from time to time. Before you walk out of the arrivals hall, look for the signs marked "机场巴士 Airport Bus", "出租车 Taxi" and "地铁 Metro" inside the building, or ask at an Information desk — staff can point you the right way.
From XIY into the city

From the airport to town — 3 main options compared

Most international travellers land here. Here's everything laid out clearly — choose by where your hotel is and what time you land.

🚌
Airport Bus (机场巴士)
XIY to the Bell Tower, railway station or major hotels · drops you right there, no transfer

This is what most visitors choose, because it sets you down in the central districts without dragging luggage up and down stairs. There are several lines by destination, and the in-town fare is ¥25 per person (~฿125). The most popular is the Bell Tower Line, which stops at the Bell Tower (Bell Tower Hotel) and takes around 70–96 minutes; the Railway Station Line calls at Xi'an North, then the Jincheng Hotel, then Xi'an Railway Station. There are also lines to Qujiang (the Big Wild Goose Pagoda district), Chang'an and the western Hi-tech Zone. Buses leave every 30–50 minutes, and you buy a ticket at the counter inside or pay onboard.

¥25 / person (~฿125) ~70–96 min Drops you in the hotel districts, no transfer
Best if: you're staying near the Bell Tower, the Muslim Quarter, inside the City Wall, or near the railway station, and want the simplicity of not changing vehicles. Less ideal if your hotel is far from a bus stop (you may need a short taxi at the end).
Operating hours: In-town lines run roughly 09:00 to past midnight (varies by line)
Where to board: T2 at the Passenger Service Center · T3 and T5 at the Ground Transportation Center
Popular destinations: Bell Tower Line (city centre) · Railway Station Line

🚇
Metro Line 14 (地铁14号线)
XIY to Xi'an North (北客站), transfer to Line 2 / Line 4 · cheapest option

Metro Line 14 runs from Airport West (机场西) station at the airport into Xi'an North Railway Station (西安北 / 北客站), which is both the high-speed rail hub and a metro interchange. The ride takes around 40–48 minutes for a fare of ¥7 (~฿35). From there you change to Line 2, which runs south through the Bell Tower (钟楼) and the South Gate at Yongningmen, or Line 4 toward the Big Wild Goose Pagoda district. Total time to the Bell Tower is about 78 minutes, for roughly ¥8 (~฿40). Signs in the stations are in English, so getting lost isn't really a worry. The one catch: you'll be hauling bags up and down escalators and walking the transfer at Xi'an North, which is enormous.

¥7–8 / person (~฿35–40) ~78 min to the Bell Tower (incl. transfer) Transfer at Xi'an North required
Best if: you're on a budget, want to skip the traffic, are travelling light, and your hotel is near a Line 2 or Line 4 station. Not ideal for late arrivals (Line 14 closes around 23:26) or if you've got several heavy bags.
Operating hours: Approximately 06:00–23:26 daily
Transfer point: Xi'an North (西安北站) — Line 2 to the Bell Tower, Line 4 to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda
How to enter: Scan the Alipay / WeChat QR at the gate, or buy a token from the machine
🚕
Taxi
XIY to anywhere · most direct, one rule to remember

A metered taxi from XIY to the city centre (the Bell Tower area) runs ¥110–150 (~฿550–750) plus a ¥10–15 highway toll that the passenger pays, taking 40–60 minutes in normal traffic. To Xi'an North alone it's cheaper — around ¥70–100. Use only the official taxi rank inside the terminal: T2 is outside Gate 213 on Floor 1, while T3 and T5 are at the Ground Transportation Center on Floor 1. Don't accept anyone who approaches you in the hall — these are almost always unlicensed touts who charge flat, negotiated rates. Confirm the driver starts the meter before you leave the airport grounds.

¥110–150 + toll (~฿550–750) 40–60 min depending on traffic Door to door, 24 hours
Watch out for: unlicensed touts who approach you before you reach the official rank — decline without engaging and walk straight to the well-signed rank. If a driver won't run the meter, get out and take the next cab. The highway toll is a normal passenger charge, not a scam.
📱
DiDi (滴滴出行)
Ride-hailing app · similar to the taxi fare, price confirmed upfront

DiDi is China's dominant ride-hailing app and works much like Grab or Uber. The fare is comparable to a metered taxi, paid through Alipay or WeChat Pay so you don't handle cash, and you see the price before you book. The pickup point at the airport is usually a designated zone separate from the taxi rank, so follow the DiDi signs or check the in-app map once booked. Download and link your payment before you fly — airport Wi-Fi can be slow at busy times — and note that Alipay has DiDi built in (the 出行 / Transport menu), ready to use once you're set up.

~¥100–150 (~฿500–750) Pay via Alipay / WeChat Pay Fixed price shown upfront
One practical tip: set up the Alipay Metro QR before you land. When you reach Line 14, or walk into any metro station in town, you can scan straight through the gate without queuing for a ticket. See how to set up Alipay for visitors in our China payments guide.
Late arrivals

Landing late, after the metro stops — what to do

Metro Line 14 closes around 23:26, but Xi'an still has ways into the city overnight.

Some flights from Thailand land in the evening or late at night. If you've missed the last metro, don't panic — Xi'an has genuinely useful overnight options.

🚌 Night airport bus (Night Line)

Night lines run roughly 22:00–01:30 to the Bell Tower and railway station, every 30–40 minutes, at the same ¥25 fare as the day services. The cheapest option if you land before about 1 am.

Hours: ~22:00–01:30 · Fare: ¥25 (~฿125)
🚕 Taxi / DiDi — 24 hours

The official rank has cabs all night. Late fares may be slightly higher on the meter, but it's the most direct option. Having Alipay / DiDi ready helps, since you may need to communicate your destination at that hour.

Hours: 24 hours · Fare: ¥110–150 + toll
🏨 Hotel pickup

Many Xi'an hotels offer a paid airport pickup. If you land very late, arrange one in advance — far less stressful than hunting for a taxi at 2 am. See hotels that offer it in our 10 best Xi'an hotels.

Upside: Met at the gate by name · Need: Book ahead
🌅 For the return — Morning Line

If your departing flight leaves at dawn, a Morning Line airport bus runs from town to the airport from around 04:00, and taxis run all night. Always allow 3 hours' check-in time for an international departure.

Hours: from ~04:00 · Fare: ¥25 (~฿125)
Your first 30 minutes

Right after you land — do these 4 things before you leave

China has no Google, Facebook, LINE or WhatsApp. Without preparing, that first step off the plane can be disorienting. Sort these four things while you're still inside the terminal.

1
Turn on your eSIM / roaming straight away — data matters most, because you'll need it for Alipay, DiDi and maps. Many China eSIMs include a built-in VPN so Google, LINE and the rest work. Set it up and test it before you travel. Read our China internet, VPN & eSIM guide.
2
Check Alipay / WeChat Pay is linked to a card — shops, the metro, buses and DiDi barely take cash in China. Link a Visa or Mastercard in international mode before you arrive. We walk through it in the Alipay & WeChat Pay guide.
3
Carry a little backup cash — even if you mostly use apps, keep ¥100–300 in yuan on hand in case a bus or app glitches. The airport ATMs work, or bring yuan from home.
4
Save your hotel name in Chinese — screenshot the hotel name and address in Chinese characters to show a taxi driver or to ask directions. English isn't as widely spoken in Xi'an as in Shanghai or Beijing, and the characters help a lot.
Paying for transit

How to pay for the metro and buses — no coins required

Xi'an's transit is reasonably well set up for international visitors, with English-menu token machines. But the slickest options are all app-based.

Alipay Metro QR (recommended)

Open Alipay, go to the Transport / Metro function, and scan the QR at the metro gate or the reader on a city bus. No ticket, fare deducted automatically — a big time-saver when it's crowded.

Requirement: Link a Visa or Mastercard in international mode — see our China payments guide
Single-Journey Token

Station vending machines have English menus. Select your destination, pay with cash or coins, and receive a small plastic disc to scan at the entry gate and return at your exit station.

Upside: No app needed · Downside: Queue every time
Chang'an Tong (长安通) card

Xi'an's reloadable transit card. Buy and top up at station counters; works on the metro and city buses. Worth it if you're staying several days and would rather not rely on an app.

Cost: Deposit + loaded credit
WeChat Pay

Works exactly like Alipay for metro and bus payments. If you've already set up WeChat Pay and linked a card, it works the same way — both apps accept foreign cards in international mode.

Setup: Open the account + link a card before arriving in China

Frequently asked

FAQ · Before you land in Xi'an

How far is Xi'an airport from the city centre?
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) sits northwest of the city, about 25 km from the Bell Tower in the centre. That distance doesn't sound far, but because the route runs along expressways the real journey time is around 40–60 minutes by car, or 70–96 minutes on an airport bus that makes several stops.
Which terminal do I land at — T2, T3 or T5?
Since February 2025, the new Terminal 5 handles all international flights, including those from Thailand, along with major carriers such as China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines. T2 and T3 serve domestic routes. If you're flying direct from Bangkok you'll almost certainly land at T5. Bus stops, the taxi rank and the metro entrance are all clearly signposted inside the building.
Is the airport bus or Metro Line 14 better from Xi'an airport?
It depends where your hotel is. If you're staying near the Bell Tower, the Muslim Quarter or the railway station, the airport bus Bell Tower Line (¥25) drops you right there with no stairs to drag luggage up and down. Metro Line 14 (¥7) is cheaper and avoids traffic, but you have to change trains at Xi'an North to continue on Line 2 or Line 4 — best if your luggage is light and your hotel is near a metro station. See the in-town routes in our Xi'an metro guide.
How do I pay for the metro and buses in Xi'an?
The easiest option for visitors is the Alipay or WeChat Pay in-app QR — scan at the metro gate or the reader on city buses, no ticket needed. Alternatively, buy single-journey tokens from the English-menu vending machines, or use a reloadable Chang'an Tong (长安通) card bought at station counters. Airport bus tickets are sold at the counter or paid onboard. Set it all up before you fly with our China payments guide.
How much does a taxi from Xi'an airport cost, and what should I watch out for?
A metered taxi from XIY to the city centre (the Bell Tower area) runs about ¥110–150 plus a ¥10–15 highway toll that the passenger pays, taking 40–60 minutes in normal traffic. Use only the official taxi rank — T2 is outside Gate 213 on Floor 1, while T3 and T5 are at the Ground Transportation Center on Floor 1. Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the hall, as these are usually unlicensed touts. Make sure the driver starts the meter before leaving the airport.
What if my flight lands late, after the metro stops running?
Metro Line 14 runs until about 23:26. But Xi'an also has night airport buses (Night Line) running roughly 22:00–01:30 to the Bell Tower and railway station, plus 24-hour taxis at the official rank. If you land very late, set up Alipay / DiDi in advance, or arrange a hotel pickup ahead of time.
