Where to stay in the Matsu Islands?
7 real-review picks
Cold War tunnels · Blue Tears · Fujian heritage

Matsu is Taiwan's most singular archipelago — a Cold War frontline (1949–90s) that looks and feels nothing like the rest of the island: Fujian stone architecture, anti-tank tunnels blasted through granite, and Blue Tears bioluminescence (the world's most intense concentration) visible April–September. Reach it by a 50-min flight from Taipei Songshan or an overnight 8–10hr ferry from Keelung. Most accommodation is family-run B&Bs and small guesthouses — no international hotel brands. These are the 7 stays we found worth it at every budget, across three islands.

🏝️ Why Matsu is unlike anywhere else in Taiwan — and worth the journey

The Matsu Archipelago (馬祖列島) sits in the East China Sea, a mere 9–25 km from Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland, yet governed by Taiwan — which explains why it looks and feels so singular. Fujian stone architecture in pristine condition, military tunnels and fortifications from the Cold War (1949–90s) blasted through solid granite, and the Blue Tears (藍眼淚) phenomenon — Noctiluca scintillans bioluminescence that turns the sea an electric blue at night — the most intense concentration of this natural display found anywhere in the world, April to September. Matsu divides into several main islands: Nangan (南竿), Beigan (北竿), Juguang (莒光) and Dongyin (東引), each with a distinct character. Almost every place to stay is a small B&B or family guesthouse — there are no international hotel brands here. The best season is April to October: winter brings thick fog, frequent flight and ferry cancellations, and a general shutdown of services.

🚇
Two ways to reach Matsu from Taipei: Fly Uni Air or Daily Air from Songshan Airport (TSA) — about 50 minutes to Nangan (LZN) or Beigan (MFK), from roughly NT$1,800 per leg. Flights are limited; book in advance. Or take the overnight ferry from Keelung (基隆) pier — departs evening, arrives Nangan around dawn, 8–10 hours, from NT$1,000+ per person. Good for those with budget flexibility and a spirit of adventure. On the islands, Nangan has a public bus circuit. Scooter or car rental is available for independent exploration. Between Nangan and Beigan there is a regular inter-island ferry taking about 20 minutes.

🏆 303 reviews · #1 TripAdvisor Nangan — most validated on Matsu📍 Nangan central location — airport and pier both accessible🗣️ English-speaking owner — arranges tours, Blue Tears trips🌊 Blue Tears boat tour arranged through property
📍 Nangan Township, Lienchiang County (馬祖南竿鄉), Taiwan

Dayspring Inn earns the top spot not through the highest score but through the metric that matters most in a remote destination: 303 reviews at 8.9 and the #1 TripAdvisor ranking in Nangan — a dataset no other Matsu property comes close to matching. Consistency at that volume, across all seasons, cannot be faked. The English-speaking owner is a genuine asset on an island where language can be a barrier: Blue Tears trip coordination, Cold War tunnel tours and inter-island logistics are all arranged through the property. Its Nangan location provides straightforward access to both the airport and the main ferry pier — the most practical base for first-time Matsu visitors.

💡 Pro tip: Tell the owner in advance which night you most want to see Blue Tears — they monitor sea conditions and will point you to the best spot or arrange a boat tour when the bioluminescence is strong. A heads-up the day before gives them time to plan.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ 303 reviews at 8.9, #1 TripAdvisor Nangan — the most thoroughly proven stay on Matsu
  • ✓ English-speaking owner who arranges Blue Tears trips, Cold War tours and inter-island logistics
  • ✓ Central Nangan location — best-connected base for airport and pier access
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ High demand from 303 reviews means it books out early during Blue Tears season (May–Jul)
  • ✗ Not right on the waterfront — focus is on location utility and service, not an open sea view

🌟 Score 9.1 — highest on this list🦞 Own beachfront seafood restaurant — Yellow Croaker and fresh Matsu catch🌊 East China Sea views from every room🌙 Beachfront Blue Tears viewing point on clear nights
📍 Nangan Township, Lienchiang County (馬祖南竿鄉), Taiwan

Island View B&B earns the second spot with the highest score on this list — 9.1 from 80 reviews, with East China Sea views from every room and its own beachfront seafood restaurant. Multiple guests describe the meals as the highlight of their entire Matsu trip: fresh-caught Yellow Croaker (黃魚 — the iconic Matsu fish), prawns and shellfish brought in daily from the surrounding sea. The beach in front of the property is a natural Blue Tears viewing spot on calm, clear nights. For travellers who want the best score combined with sea views and a genuine Matsu dining experience, Island View is the answer.

💡 Pro tip: Book dinner at the property's own restaurant when you reserve your room — Yellow Croaker and fresh prawns are available in limited quantities each day, and this is the most authentic way to eat like a Matsu local.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ Score 9.1 — highest on this list; 80 reviews show consistent quality
  • ✓ Own beachfront seafood restaurant serving Yellow Croaker and fresh Matsu catch daily
  • ✓ Sea views from every room; beachfront Blue Tears spot on clear nights
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ 80 reviews — a much smaller dataset than Dayspring's 303; less depth of validation
  • ✗ Higher price point than most Nangan B&Bs — worth it if sea views and food are priorities

🌙 270° East China Sea view — best Blue Tears vantage on Matsu🏝️ Beigan — quieter and less crowded than Nangan🌊 Sea visible on three sides from the terrace⭐ Location score 9.6 — highest on this list
📍 Beigan Township (北竿鄉), Lienchiang County, Taiwan

So Lohas is the specific answer if Blue Tears is the reason you are going to Matsu — a 270° view of the East China Sea from a property on Beigan, the island with the most intense Blue Tears concentrations in the archipelago. The location score of 9.6 reflects a genuine physical advantage: sea is visible from the bed, sea is visible from the terrace on three sides, and on peak Blue Tears nights the glow is visible directly from the room without stepping outside. Beigan is quieter and less visited than Nangan — the better atmosphere for a bioluminescence pilgrimage. 90 reviews at consistent quality confirms the property delivers what it promises.

💡 Pro tip: Blue Tears appear naturally and cannot be guaranteed, but Beigan in May–July has the highest occurrence rate in Matsu. Give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust to full darkness away from artificial light — the glow becomes dramatically more visible as your pupils dilate.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ 270° East China Sea view, location score 9.6 — the best Blue Tears front-row on all of Matsu
  • ✓ Beigan is quieter than Nangan — better atmosphere and less competition for the best viewing spots
  • ✓ 90 reviews at consistently high quality confirm the property delivers on its promises
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ Beigan requires a 20-min inter-island ferry from Nangan — more logistics than staying on the main island
  • ✗ Blue Tears are never guaranteed — a rainy or overcast night means no display regardless of location

🌊 Private sea-view balcony on every room⭐ Score 9.0 consistently maintained📍 Nangan — straightforward access to all island highlights💰 Best value sea-view B&B on Nangan
📍 Nangan Township, Lienchiang County (馬祖南竿鄉), Taiwan

Blue Zhuhai B&B takes fourth as the best mid-range option on Nangan — a solid score of 9.0 from 60 reviews, a private sea-view balcony on every room, and a price point that undercuts Island View B&B without sacrificing the views meaningfully. For travellers who want to wake up to the East China Sea from their own balcony on Nangan but do not want to pay the Island View premium, Blue Zhuhai is the best balance of cost and experience. Its central Nangan position covers the airport, pier and main attractions without requiring a scooter for everything.

💡 Pro tip: Request the highest-floor sea-view balcony room at the time of booking — the higher the floor, the more open the horizon, which matters particularly for Blue Tears nights when a clear, unobstructed sightline to the water makes all the difference.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ Score 9.0, 60 reviews — the most consistently validated mid-range B&B on Nangan
  • ✓ Private sea-view balcony on every room at a price meaningfully below Island View B&B
  • ✓ Central Nangan — easy access to airport, pier and all main attractions
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ 60 reviews — a moderate dataset; less depth than Dayspring's 303
  • ✗ No single standout feature that separates it from other Nangan B&Bs — a strong all-rounder rather than a destination in itself

🏛️ Sleep in a genuine 100-year-old Fujian stone building🏘️ Qinbi village — the most photogenic in all of Matsu🌊 Sea views over the East China Sea from the village📸 Mediterranean-Fujian atmosphere found nowhere else in Taiwan
📍 Qinbi Village (芹壁村), Beigan Township (北竿鄉), Lienchiang County, Taiwan

Chin-Be Village offers an experience that no other property in Taiwan can replicate — sleeping inside a 100-year-old Fujian stone building in the village of Qinbi, preserved on a clifftop above the East China Sea. Qinbi is called the "Mediterranean of Matsu" for good reason: granite houses in the Fujian style climb the hillside, the East China Sea stretches to the horizon, and the Chinese mainland sits 9 km across the water. At score 8.1 from 81 reviews, Chin-Be is not the highest-rated property on this list — but it is the only heritage stay, and for architecture and cultural travellers that difference is non-negotiable.

💡 Pro tip: Walk through Qinbi village at dusk — the golden light on the stone buildings with an orange sea behind them is the most-shared photograph from any Matsu trip. Bring a camera and allow 30–40 minutes to explore slowly before the light disappears.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ An experience found nowhere else in Taiwan — sleeping in a real 100-year-old Fujian stone building in Qinbi
  • ✓ Qinbi is the most visually striking village in Matsu; the Mediterranean-Fujian atmosphere is impossible to stage
  • ✓ 81 reviews confirm the heritage stay works practically, not just aesthetically
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ Score 8.1 is the lowest on this list — amenities may not match newer B&Bs
  • ✗ Beigan requires an inter-island ferry from Nangan — more logistics for guests short on time

🗺️ Only OTA property on Dongyin — Matsu's most isolated island🏰 Cold War fortifications + underground tunnels throughout the island🚶 Dramatic clifftop hiking trails — virtually no other tourists🍜 Gaoliang Liquor Seafood Noodle — authentic local dish
📍 Dongyin Township (東引鄉), Lienchiang County, Taiwan

Dongyin First Homestay has the clearest case for inclusion on this list: it is the only OTA-listed property on Dongyin, the most remote and rarely visited island in the Matsu archipelago. If you want to see Matsu's Cold War fortifications at their most intact — gun emplacements, tunnel systems blasted through cliffsides, radar stations and military infrastructure left in place — Dongyin is where they are. Add cliffside hiking trails with virtually no other visitors and a raw, unpolished island character that Nangan and Beigan have partly smoothed away. Score 8.7 from 233 reviews proves the property delivers even at this distance from the main island.

💡 Pro tip: Dongyin requires either a direct flight from Songshan (not through Nangan) or a long ferry connection — plan logistics separately and check the flight and ferry schedule before booking accommodation. On the island, public transport is minimal: scooter hire is the practical solution for reaching the Cold War sites.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ Only OTA property on Dongyin — 233 reviews at 8.7 prove consistent quality on the most remote island
  • ✓ Dongyin has Matsu's most intact Cold War infrastructure — gun emplacements, tunnels and fortifications fully accessible
  • ✓ Cheaper than Nangan and Beigan stays for a more authentic and less-visited experience
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ Dongyin is the hardest island to reach — direct flight or long ferry, complex logistics
  • ✗ Very limited facilities on a small island — not suited to guests who need comfort or convenience

💰 Dorms from NT$800 — cheapest on all of Matsu🏖️ Right on Jinsha Beach — one of the best Blue Tears spots on Nangan🏘️ Jinsha fishing village — authentic Matsu, not the tourist strip🎒 Backpacker-friendly community atmosphere
📍 Jinsha Village (津沙村), Nangan Township, Lienchiang County, Taiwan

Jinsha Backpacker Inn closes the list as the cheapest stay on Matsu, sitting right on Jinsha Beach in one of Nangan's most characterful traditional fishing villages — dorms from NT$800 and a score of 8.7 from 107 reviews that proves budget accommodation here does not mean poor quality. Jinsha Beach is one of the best Blue Tears viewing spots on Nangan: step out of the property and you are already on the sand. Jinsha village itself is a preserved fishing settlement with a character quite different from Nangan's busier tourist centre — old stone buildings, small boats and a pace of life that matches what most travellers imagine when they picture Matsu.

💡 Pro tip: Jinsha village is 10–15 minutes by vehicle from Nangan's airport and pier — check with the property about transfers or the nearest scooter rental when you book. The village has no convenience store, so stock up on essentials before heading over.
👍 Pros
  • ✓ NT$800 dorms — cheapest on Matsu; 107 reviews at 8.7 prove quality does not suffer
  • ✓ Right on Jinsha Beach — one of Nangan's best Blue Tears spots; walk out the door to the sand
  • ✓ Jinsha fishing village has authentic Matsu character — old stone buildings, not the main tourist strip
👎 Things to note
  • ✗ 10–15 min from Nangan's airport and pier — a vehicle or scooter is necessary
  • ✗ Dorm format — not suited to couples seeking privacy or travellers who need quiet

🌙
Came specifically for Blue Tears — want the best front-row position on the archipelago
So Lohas B&B (#3) — Beigan island, 270° East China Sea view, location score 9.6. The strongest Blue Tears vantage point on all of Matsu. Best for travellers whose trip is planned around the bioluminescence and who are comfortable with the 20-min inter-island ferry to Beigan.
🌊
Want a sea-view balcony on Nangan at a mid-range price
Matsu Blue Zhuhai B&B (#4) — score 9.0, 60 reviews, private sea-view balcony on every room at a price below Island View B&B. The best value sea-view option on Nangan for travellers who want a balcony view without paying a premium.
🏛️
Architecture and culture traveller — want a heritage experience found nowhere else in Taiwan
Chin-Be Village (#5) — sleep in a 100-year-old Fujian stone building in Qinbi, the most beautiful village in Matsu. An experience genuinely unavailable anywhere else in Taiwan. Best for travellers drawn by architecture and cultural history rather than activities and sea views.
🗺️
Want to explore Dongyin — the most remote and Cold War-intact island in Matsu
Dongyin First Homestay (#6) — the only OTA property on Dongyin, 233 reviews at 8.7, from NT$1,500. If intact Cold War infrastructure and clifftop hiking without crowds are what you are after, Dongyin and Dongyin First are the only option.
💰
On a tight budget — want Blue Tears on the beach without overpaying
Jinsha Backpacker Inn (#7) — dorms from NT$800, the cheapest on Matsu, right on Jinsha Beach which is one of Nangan's best Blue Tears spots. 107 reviews at 8.7 prove quality does not fall off at this price point. Best for backpackers and budget travellers who want the real Matsu experience.

Note: Prices quoted are approximate for standard nights; actual rates vary by date and availability. During Blue Tears Peak (May–July) prices rise and properties fill quickly — book at least 1–2 months ahead. Flights and ferries to Matsu are frequently cancelled in winter (November–March) due to dense fog and storms; plan your trip for April to October and always keep a contingency plan, as Matsu is remote and transport options are limited. Blue Tears (藍眼淚) are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed — but May to July offers the highest probability on the archipelago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions — Matsu Islands accommodation

How is Matsu different from Green Island or Orchid Island?

Matsu (馬祖) is defined by Fujian stone architecture (not found anywhere else in Taiwan), Cold War military history from the 1949–90s frontline against the PRC mainland, and Blue Tears bioluminescence — the most intense natural concentration of Noctiluca scintillans in the world. The food is Fujian-Chinese rather than Taiwanese, and the mainland is only 9 km away. Best for travellers interested in history, architecture and unusual natural phenomena. Green Island (綠島) is easier to reach, focused on diving, snorkelling and a famous saltwater hot spring. Orchid Island (蘭嶼) is the most remote, home to the living Tao indigenous culture and Pacific diving with 30+ metre visibility. If you want Cold War history and Blue Tears, Matsu is unique. If you want diving and indigenous culture, Orchid Island. If you want a gentler first offshore island, Green Island.

How do you get to the Matsu Islands?

Two options from Taipei: (1) Fly Uni Air or Daily Air from Songshan Airport (TSA) — about 50 minutes to Nangan (LZN) or Beigan (MFK), from roughly NT$1,800 per leg. Seats are limited; book online in advance at the Uni Air or Daily Air website. (2) Overnight ferry from Keelung (基隆) pier — departs around 20:00, arrives Nangan around 06:00, 8–10 hours, from NT$1,000+ per person one way. Buy tickets through the Taiwan shipping company website. On the islands, Nangan has a public bus service. Scooter and car hire is available on Nangan and Beigan. Between Nangan and Beigan a regular inter-island ferry runs about every hour or two during the day.

What are Blue Tears and where is the best place to see them in Matsu?

Blue Tears (藍眼淚) is the bioluminescent glow produced by Noctiluca scintillans, a marine dinoflagellate that turns the sea a vivid electric blue at night when disturbed. Matsu has the world's highest recorded concentration of this phenomenon, occurring April to September and peaking in May to July. Best spots on Nangan: Jinsha Beach (津沙灘) and Fuao Harbour (復興港). Best spots on Beigan: the east-coast beaches near Qinbi and the viewpoint on Bi-Shan (壁山). Blue Tears require darkness away from artificial light, a clear sky, and calm seas — allow 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust. Some properties on this list monitor conditions and can arrange a boat trip or point you to the best spot on a given night; ask when you check in.

When is the best time to visit the Matsu Islands?

April to October is the recommended window. Key periods: May–July = Blue Tears peak, the main draw for most international visitors; the phenomenon is most intense during this window. April–September = good weather overall, ferries and flights running reliably, all properties open. July–August = Taiwanese domestic peak season; accommodation fills fast, book 2+ months ahead. November–March = dense winter fog causes frequent flight and ferry cancellations; many activities limited; several B&Bs close. Matsu is not a year-round destination in the reliable sense.

How much does accommodation in Matsu cost?

Price range across this list: Jinsha Backpacker Inn dorms from NT$800 (cheapest); Dongyin First Homestay from NT$1,500; Chin-Be Village from NT$1,800; Matsu Blue Zhuhai B&B from NT$2,000; So Lohas B&B from NT$2,200; Dayspring Inn from NT$2,500; Matsu Island View B&B from NT$2,800. Flights add roughly NT$1,800 per leg from Taipei Songshan. During Blue Tears Peak (May–July) rates rise and properties fill quickly — book at least one to two months in advance.

Nangan vs Beigan vs Dongyin — what is the difference?

Nangan (南竿) is the main island: largest, most infrastructure, the airport and main ferry pier, most accommodation and restaurants, and the best logistics base. Key sites include Beihai Tunnel (a Cold War underwater boat dock blasted through granite), the Matsu Folklore Culture Museum, and the main Mazu Temple. Beigan (北竿) is quieter, reached by a 20-min inter-island ferry from Nangan. Qinbi village (芹壁) is the architectural highlight of the entire archipelago. Beigan has the most intense Blue Tears conditions in Matsu. Has its own airport. Dongyin (東引) is the most remote and least-visited island, with the most complete Cold War military landscape intact — gun emplacements, tunnels and observation posts — plus dramatic clifftop hiking with virtually no other tourists. Reached by direct flight from Songshan or a long ferry from Nangan. A 3–4 day trip can cover Nangan and Beigan well; Dongyin requires a dedicated extra day and separate logistics planning.
