About This Trip

One Day, Two Different Worlds · Shifen by Day · Jiufen at Dusk

If you've ever seen a poster of that red-lantern village and thought of Spirited Away — coming here will show you the real thing is even better. This one-day plan is designed to give you both worlds: hop the train to Shifen in the morning, release a sky lantern over the railway tracks, swing by the waterfall, then head to Jiufen in the afternoon — narrow alleyways, taro balls, and A-Mei Tea House looking every bit like an anime scene. Then watch the golden hour transform into a sea of red lanterns glowing down every step of Old Street.

Daily Schedule

Hour-by-Hour Itinerary — Full Day

DAY
1
Shifen → Jiufen · Lanterns · Tea · Red Glow
09:00
Leave Taipei Main Station → RuifangTake TRA Yilan Line (express or local) to Ruifang — about 50–60 minutes, NT$49–86. From Ruifang, change to the Pingxi Line to Shifen (another 20 minutes). EasyCard works throughout.
10:30
Shifen Old Street · Release a sky lantern over the tracksSky lanterns NT$200 each (includes colours and brush). Write your wishes on all four sides. Shops line both sides of the track — when the train comes through, everyone folds things away in seconds. Honestly unlike anywhere else in the world. Aim to arrive before noon when it's still quiet.
12:30
Walk down to Shifen Waterfall (十分瀑布)20-minute walk from Old Street, or a tuk-tuk for NT$50. The falls are 40 metres wide and 20 metres tall — the largest in Taiwan. Free entry. Worth walking rather than riding; the trail is beautiful the whole way.
13:30
Back to Ruifang → bus up to JiufenFrom Ruifang Station take Bus 825 or Bus 1062 (which runs from Taipei via Ruifang) to Jiufen — 20–25 minutes, NT$15–25. Buses run every 20–30 minutes. Or share a taxi from Ruifang for NT$200–250.
14:30
Jiufen Old Street · Taro balls at A-Gan YiA-Gan Yi (阿柑姨芋圓) taro ball dessert with an ocean view — NT$60. This is the oldest stall with the best scenery on Old Street. Expect a 15–20 minute queue, but it's worth every minute.
15:30
A-Mei Tea House · Tea with a viewThe multi-storey red building often called the "Spirited Away inspiration" — whether that's myth or fact, it's undeniably stunning. Tea sets run NT$350–500 per person (minimum charge). The clearest view of Jiufen harbour and the mountains. Book ahead on weekends.
17:00
Sunset + Red Lanterns Begin to Glow (Peak Time)This is exactly why you planned to arrive in the afternoon. Between 17:00 and 18:30, golden light falls across the red tiles and lanterns flicker on all along Shuqi Road — the "magic hour" photographers travel from around the world to catch. Best spots: the top of the Shuqi Road steps and any tea-house balcony.
18:30
Dinner + snacks along Old StreetTry jiufen taro ball soup (九份芋圓湯), crab sausage, pineapple cakes, and seafood down the side alleys. Budget NT$200–400 per person for dinner.
20:00
Return to Taipei on Bus 1062Bus 1062 runs directly from Jiufen to Taipei's Zhongxiao Fuxing in about 1.5 hours — NT$120. Departs every 30–40 minutes. Alternatively, take a bus down to Ruifang and train back (NT$100 combined). Back in Taipei around 21:30–22:00.

Insider Tips

5 Things to Know Before You Go

🌅
Arrive in Jiufen mid-afternoon for the best light
17:00–19:00 is when red lanterns glow and the sun sets — the magic hour every photographer chases. Getting there before 14:00 also means you can sit at A-Mei before it gets completely packed.
📅
Avoid weekends and public holidays
On holidays Old Street gets so crowded it's hard to walk. Weekdays see about 50% fewer people. Shuqi Road is a narrow alley — two people can barely pass each other on a busy weekend.
💵
Always carry cash
Most shops on Old Street are cash-only. ATMs are available at Ruifang Station and at the entrance to Old Street. Sky lanterns and taro balls are strictly cash.
⏱️
Budget 2 hours for Shifen, 4–5 for Jiufen
Shifen: lantern release 30 min + waterfall 40 min + market stroll 30 min = about 2 hours. Jiufen: if you want to sit comfortably at A-Mei, allow at least 4 hours.
🚌
Bus 1062 goes direct to Taipei — no transfer needed
Bus 1062 from the Jiufen bus stop runs direct to Zhongxiao Fuxing (Blue–Orange MRT intersection) for NT$120. Cheaper and more flexible than taking the train via Ruifang. Service runs until around 22:00.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ · Common Questions

Is one day really enough for Jiufen + Shifen?
Absolutely, if you manage your time well. Shifen takes about 2 hours and Jiufen needs 4–5 hours including tea at A-Mei. The key is leaving Taipei before 09:00 so you make it to Jiufen in time for the magic hour at dusk.
Is a group tour or DIY better?
DIY is far better value for this trip. Group tours typically allow only 90 minutes in Jiufen — not nearly enough for A-Mei Tea House plus magic hour. The train and bus cost roughly NT$600 per person, compared to NT$1,000–1,500 for a tour.
What time do the red lanterns light up at twilight?
The red lanterns along Shuqi Road start glowing around 17:00–17:30. The most beautiful window is 17:30–19:00, when natural light and lantern light blend together. After 19:00 the lanterns are fully lit but the atmosphere feels more like pure nighttime.
Can I skip Shifen and just do Jiufen?
Absolutely. If you drop Shifen you can leave Taipei later and arrive in Jiufen around 2–3 pm, giving you more time to wander Old Street and linger over tea. Great choice if you prefer soaking in atmosphere over ticking off activities.
How much does the full day cost?
Roughly NT$1,500–2,000 per person. Breakdown: transport NT$600, sky lantern NT$200, A-Mei tea NT$400, taro balls NT$60, lunch and dinner NT$500, snacks NT$200. Souvenirs not included — still much cheaper than a group tour.
Should I still go if it's raining?
Rain is common in Jiufen — it sits on a hillside with high humidity — but rain won't ruin the trip. The red lanterns actually look more magical in the rain. Parts of the alley are covered, so one compact umbrella is enough. At Shifen the trail can get slippery when wet — wear shoes with good grip.
