Choosing approach

Train and bus — each has its own job

Taiwan's public transport network is excellent. You can reach almost anywhere without renting a car, as long as you pick the right service for the route.

🚆
Choose train when...
You're in a hurry over long distances · routes like Taipei-Kaohsiung, Taipei-Hualien, Taipei-Taichung · you need exact arrival times unaffected by traffic · you want to walk around or use the bathroom.
🚌
Choose bus when...
Budget is tight (buses cost 50-70% less) · destination has no train (Jiufen, Yehliu, Alishan, deep Yangmingshan) · you need late-night or pre-dawn departures (24/7 service) · early or late flights to handle.
⚠️ Know this first: Taiwan has two separate train systems — THSR (high-speed, west coast only) and TRA (national rail, island-wide). Tickets and bookings are completely separate. The two main long-distance bus operators are UBus and Kuo-Kuang at similar prices. City buses and the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle both accept EasyCard.

Frequently asked

FAQ — Trains vs Buses

Taipei to Kaohsiung — is the train or bus better value?

THSR wins decisively. The high-speed train runs in 90 minutes for NT$1,490 (Early Bird booking 28 days ahead drops it ~35% to around NT$970). UBus/Kuo-Kuang takes 5 hours for NT$650. The price gap is only NT$320-840 but you save nearly 4 hours. Worth it unless you're on a strict backpacker budget.

Do I need a bus to reach Jiufen and Yehliu?

Yes — no direct train to either. For Jiufen, take Keelung Bus 1062 from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT, or ride TRA to Ruifang then bus 788/F805. For Yehliu, take Kuo-Kuang 1815 from Taipei West Bus Station directly. Both accept EasyCard, which makes payment effortless.

Are long-distance buses in Taiwan safe?

Very safe. UBus and Kuo-Kuang are large established operators with modern fleets, trained drivers, dashcams and CCTV. Seats are wider than economy-class flights, many buses offer Wi-Fi and USB charging, and they run mostly on highways. Late-night services (midnight-5am) operate continuously, making them ideal for early flight departures or late arrivals.

Why is there no high-speed train to Hualien?

THSR only covers the west coast (Taipei-Kaohsiung). The east coast wasn't built because of mountainous terrain and prohibitive cost. To reach Hualien, take TRA Puyuma or Taroko Express — 2-2.5 hours along the scenic coastline for ~NT$440. Book on the first day reservations open (28 days before travel) as these trains sell out fast. Buses exist but take 3.5-4 hours and aren't worth it.

What's the difference between HSR Pass, TR Pass, and Taiwan Pass?

HSR Pass 3-day NT$2,800 — unlimited THSR rides. TR Pass 5-day NT$1,800 — all TRA trains (including Tze-Chiang and Local) but no THSR. Taiwan Pass NT$3,200 — combined HSR + TRA. Pick what matches your route: HSR Pass for frequent north-south runs, TR Pass for east coast or island loop, Taiwan Pass if you'll use both systems.

Can I use EasyCard on Taipei city buses?

Yes — and it's the best way. Tap on/off; standard fare is NT$15 per zone, EasyCard discounts it to about NT$12, and transferring between MRT/bus within 2 hours gives further discounts. City buses cover places MRT doesn't reach — like Yangmingshan, Maokong, and deeper Beitou. Google Maps has full route info in English.
