Quick Summary

Is THSR Worth It? Read This First

🚀 When THSR makes sense — and when it doesn't

THSR is the right choice when: Your trip is 3 days or under, you prioritise speed, or you're heading to a southern city (Taichung / Tainan / Kaohsiung) — THSR is 2–3x faster than conventional TRA express trains.
It's especially good value when: You book 28 days ahead for the 35% Early Bird discount. Taipei → Kaohsiung drops from NT$1,490 to approximately NT$970.
⚠️
Consider TRA or bus instead when: Budget is the priority and time is flexible; you want east-coast scenery (Hualien / Taroko); or your destination isn't served by THSR (Hualien, Taitung, Keelung, Jiufen).
🎫
3-Day Pass NT$2,400 is worth it if you're visiting multiple cities in one week — for example Taipei → Tainan → Kaohsiung → back, the individual fares add up to over NT$3,800.
⚠️ Note: All fares and journey times on this page are approximate 2026 reference figures. Always verify current prices at thsrc.com.tw before purchasing.

5 THSR Discounts Worth Knowing About

Early Bird seats are allocated in limited quantities — the longer ahead you book, the deeper the discount, but once that inventory sells out the reduced rate is gone even within the booking window.

35% OFF
Early Bird — 28 Days Ahead
Book 28 days before departure for a 35% discount — limited seats, sells out fast, Standard Car only. Booking opens at 06:30 Taiwan time on the eligible day. Example: Taipei → Kaohsiung drops from NT$1,490 to approximately NT$970.
20% OFF
Early Bird — 8 Days Ahead
Book 8 days before departure for a 20% discount. More inventory available than the 28-day tier but still limited. Standard Car only — a good option for travellers with a moderately firm plan.
10% OFF
Early Bird — 5 Days Ahead
Book 5 days before departure for a 10% discount — the smallest Early Bird saving but still meaningfully better than full fare. Standard Car only. The most accessible tier for flexible planners.
50% OFF
Senior Discount (65+)
Passengers aged 65 or over receive a 50% discount. Present a passport or national ID confirming age at the counter or when booking online via thsrc.com.tw. Available for Standard Car.

Decision Guide

Which Ticket Option Is Right for Your Trip?

🗺️
Long trip visiting 4+ cities within 7 days
3-Day Pass NT$2,400 is almost certainly best value. Example: Taipei → Taichung → Tainan → Kaohsiung → back ≈ NT$3,800+ in individual fares. You save approximately NT$1,400 or more.
📅
Trip date confirmed, booking 28 days ahead
Early Bird 28-day (35% off) via thsrc.com.tw or Klook — set a reminder and book the moment the window opens. These seats move fast, especially on popular routes at weekends.
📱
Moderately planned — booking 5–8 days ahead
Early Bird 5-day (10%) or 8-day (20%), or book through Klook which frequently has 10–15% promotional discounts for international travellers. You get a QR code — no paper ticket to manage.
Last-minute or unplanned travel
Station counter or kiosk, full fare. Non-reserved car (no seat assignment) is an option if you don't mind the risk of standing during peak periods. THSR runs every 15–30 minutes — you won't wait long for the next train.
Seat Classes

3 THSR Seat Types — Which Should You Choose?

💺
Standard Car
對號座 · Reserved Standard

The default and most popular class. 2+3 seats per row, reclining seats, free Wi-Fi (patchy in tunnels), USB and AC charging at every seat. Large luggage racks at the end of each car. Suitable for every route length.

Fare: As per fare table above · Early Bird discounts available

👑
Business Car
商務車廂 · Business Class

2+2 seats per row, wider seats, more legroom. Cabin crew serve complimentary drinks and a Bento meal on routes from Taichung southward. Price is approximately 70% higher than Standard — worth considering for routes over 1 hour if you value the comfort and meal.

Fare: ~70% above Standard · No Early Bird discount

🎫
Non-Reserved Car
自由座 · Unreserved Seats

2–3 cars per train with no seat assignment — same price as a Standard reserved ticket, but you sit wherever you find space. Great for off-peak travel; risky on weekends and public holidays when these cars fill quickly and standing is possible.

Which cars: Usually the last 2–3 cars (lowest car numbers). Check the platform signage before boarding.

Practical Tips

8 THSR Tips That Experienced Travellers Know

Set an alarm for Early Bird opening
The 28-day Early Bird window opens at 06:30 Taiwan time (UTC+8). Discounted seats on popular routes — especially Taipei–Kaohsiung on weekends — sell out within minutes. Book the moment the window opens, not later in the day.
📱
Klook QR codes work directly at the gate
THSR tickets purchased through Klook generate a QR code in the app. Scan it directly at the station turnstile — no need to visit a counter to exchange it for a paper ticket. One of the smoothest transit booking experiences in Asia.
🪟
Choose your seat side for the view
Travelling south from Taipei — the left side (seats D/E) tends to offer mountain and farmland views. The right side (seats A/B) gets glimpses of the coastal plain near Tainan and Kaohsiung. Neither is dramatically superior, but worth knowing.
🍴
Buy a station Bento — it's genuinely good
THSR stations sell a variety of Bento boxes for around NT$80–120. Eating on the train is perfectly acceptable and is part of the classic Taiwan rail experience. Pick one up on the concourse before boarding — shops are near the fare gates.
🛑
EasyCard does not work on THSR
Your EasyCard is valid on Taipei MRT, city buses and YouBike — but THSR is a separate network and requires its own dedicated ticket. Don't show up expecting to tap through with an EasyCard.
🚗
Non-reserved cars are at the low-number end
Check the platform diagram — unreserved cars are typically the last 2–3 cars (numbered from Car 1 at the front). Walking to the correct boarding zone saves the confusion of sitting in a reserved seat.
📶
Free Wi-Fi is patchy — bring your own data
THSR provides free onboard Wi-Fi, but speeds drop significantly in tunnels and at 300 km/h. A Taiwan eSIM or local SIM card provides far more reliable connectivity for the journey.
🔄
Missing your train is not a disaster
THSR runs every 15–30 minutes on the Taipei–Kaohsiung corridor. If you miss your train, go to the service desk — a small fee applies to change your ticket to the next available departure. THSR is highly punctual, but not guaranteed to be perfectly on time every single run.

When Does the 3-Day Pass Pay Off?
Break-even analysis & sample itinerary

Simple rule: if individual ticket prices would total more than NT$2,400, the pass saves money.

Sample itinerary that makes the pass worthwhile: Taipei → Kaohsiung (NT$1,490) + Kaohsiung → Tainan (NT$350) + Tainan → Taipei (NT$1,350) = NT$3,190 total. Pass saves approximately NT$790.

📍Where to buy: Klook (convenient online purchase) or Taoyuan Airport T1/T2 THSR counters on arrival
⚠️Important: Prices and conditions are 2026 figures — verify latest details before buying
Not worth it when: Visiting only 1–2 cities or individual fares total less than NT$2,400

FAQ

Taiwan High-Speed Rail Questions, Answered Directly

How much does THSR cost for children?
Children under 6 ride free if they do not occupy a seat. Children aged 6–11, or younger children who require a seat, pay 50% of the adult Standard Car fare. All fares quoted on this page are adult Standard Car prices. Verify the latest rates at thsrc.com.tw before purchasing.
Is the Early Bird discount available in Business Car?
No. The Early Bird discounts (5-day 10%, 8-day 20%, 28-day 35%) apply only to Standard Car seats. Business Car tickets are sold at full fare only. Additionally, Early Bird seats are allocated in limited quantities — once that discounted inventory sells out, the reduced rate is unavailable even if you're still within the booking window.
Can I cancel or change a THSR ticket?
Yes, but with a cancellation fee. Cancellations made more than 4 days before departure incur a 5% fee; cancellations within 4 days incur 12%; no refund is available after the departure time. Early Bird tickets may have stricter conditions — always read the fare rules before purchasing.
Is there a luggage limit on THSR?
Passengers may bring up to 2 carry-on items per person, with combined dimensions not exceeding 158 cm (W + D + H) and no more than 14 kg per piece. Large suitcases fit in the overhead racks or the floor storage areas in the vestibule at each end of the car. There is no checked-baggage service — everything travels with you in the cabin.
Are pets allowed on THSR?
Pets are generally not permitted on THSR trains. The exception is certified guide dogs for passengers with visual impairments, which are permitted with advance notice. If you need to travel with a pet, contact THSRC directly to check their latest policy before you travel.
What happens if I miss my THSR train?
Missing a THSR departure is less stressful than it sounds — trains run every 15–30 minutes on the Taipei–Kaohsiung corridor. Go to the service desk in the station; staff can usually transfer you to the next available train for a small fee. THSR is among the world's most punctual rail systems, but minor delays do occur occasionally — the schedule is not guaranteed to be perfectly on time every run.
