Yanqi Hotel by Kempinski — Open the Curtains to a Lake and Mountains at One of the Closest Stays to the Great Wall

Picture this: after a full day walking the Mutianyu Great Wall, you don't have to face the long drive back into the city. You drive about 20 minutes instead, and you're at a quiet lakeside resort — pull back the curtains and there's still water and the Yanshan mountains. That's what Yanqi Hotel, managed by Kempinski (北京雁栖酒店) is: a low-rise 5-star resort sitting on a private island in Yanqi Lake, the actual venue that hosted the APEC leaders' summit in 2014. Rooms run from 54 to 456 sqm, with a spa, an indoor pool, a marina and tennis courts on site. To be honest, this is not a hotel for exploring the city — there's no metro, and it's about 60 km (a ~1.5 hr drive) from central Beijing. But if you want a calm day off paired with a Great Wall trip, it's a different world from the city towers. The scores compiled from real guest reviews sit very high.

Our Full Review

Here's what really sets this resort apart from a city hotel — the atmosphere and the space. The buildings are low-rise, arranged around a still reflecting court, with a large glass pavilion at its centre that glows beautifully in the water at dusk. Around it is Yanqi Lake and the mountains, not skyscrapers and traffic. There are only 110 rooms and suites, each starting at 54 sqm and running up to 456 sqm for the biggest suites. Plenty of guests say the rooms are larger than they expected, the beds are comfortable, and the view from the window is the thing they remember longest.

One guest recalls: "Escaping the city to stay here was the best decision — quiet, peaceful, very spacious rooms, and you wake up to the lake and the mountains. The staff looked after us so well it felt special. Perfect for actually relaxing alongside a trip to the Great Wall."

Yanqi Hotel, managed by Kempinski (北京雁栖酒店)

The big draw is the location near the Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城) — about 25 km away, roughly a 20-minute drive, far closer than staying in the city. If you plan to walk the wall first thing in the morning before the crowds, basing yourself out here saves you an hour or more of round-trip driving. Beyond Mutianyu, the area also has Hongluo Temple and Yanqi Lake itself for a stroll or a paddle. It's a calm, green, semi-rural setting.

The Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城), about a 20-minute drive from the hotel

But let's be clear before you book — there's no metro here, and it's a long way from the centre. It's about 60 km from Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, a roughly 1.5-hour drive in normal traffic, while Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) is around 45 km away. The realistic way in and out is driving yourself, a ride-hail (DiDi), or the hotel's transfer service. If your plan is museums, shopping and the old city every day, this isn't the place. But if you're here to relax and see the Great Wall, the location fits that plan perfectly.

On facilities, the resort is set up for full days on site. There's Kempinski The Spa for a recovery massage after a day on the wall, a fitness centre with an indoor swimming pool, plus a separate children's pool, a lakeside marina, tennis courts, and a Kids' Club — which makes it a genuinely good fit for families. For food there are Chinese restaurants and a breakfast buffet on site. The feature guests praise most consistently is the service — attentive, warm, and on top of every detail. It's no surprise the Yanqi Island team has handled banquets at leaders'-summit level.

A lake-and-mountain scene on the outskirts of Beijing, similar to the area where the hotel sits

The overall picture from real reviews is strong — TripAdvisor rates it 5/5 and ranks it near the top of all Beijing hotels (around #6 of more than 3,500), while Hotels.com runs as high as 9.6 and Booking.com sits around 8.8. Blending those, we land on a realistic 9.0/10. What guests agree on is the calm, the room size, the views and the service. The recurring criticisms are real too: first, the distance and the reliance on a car; and second, the limited choice of restaurants and evening activity nearby, because it's a suburban resort rather than a city district where food is a walk away at any hour.

The Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城), about a 20-minute drive from the hotel

On price, a standard room starts at around ~¥3,800 (฿19,000) per night — you may see less on a deal, and clearly more in peak and long-holiday periods. We'd always check the rate for your actual dates, because a resort like this swings a lot with the season. China's Golden Week (October 1–7) and Chinese New Year send prices up and fill rooms fast, so if you're travelling then, book several months ahead and take a free-cancellation rate. The best weather for the Great Wall is spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October).

The honest summary, friend to friend: Yanqi Hotel by Kempinski is for travellers who want a quiet day off by the lake, big rooms, and a base close to the Great Wall. If you split your Beijing trip in two — city hotel for the old town one stretch, suburban resort to wind down another — this is the answer that fits. But if your trip is city sightseeing every day and budget leads the call, look at the Wangfujing or CBD options in our Beijing list first.

This place is a great fit if...
In short — if you want a quiet day off by the lake, big rooms, and a base close to the Mutianyu Great Wall, Yanqi Hotel by Kempinski is the best choice for an escape paired with a wall trip. But if you'll be sightseeing in the old city every day, it's far out and there's no metro.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you plan to sightsee in the city (Forbidden City / Tiananmen / shopping) every day · It's about 60 km from the centre, with no metro and a ~1.5 hr drive · Fix → choose a Wangfujing or CBD hotel in our list, where attractions are an easy walk or metro ride away
  • 💡If you don't drive and don't want to rely on taxis/DiDi · Getting in and out needs a car throughout; there's no public transport straight to the door · Fix → check the hotel's transfer service and pre-book a Great Wall tour that includes pickup
  • 💡If you're travelling during Golden Week or Chinese New Year · Resort rates surge and rooms sell out fast · Fix → book 2–3 months ahead, check the price for your dates, and take a free-cancellation rate

Insider Tips
🧱
Do the Great Wall early in the morning
Stay here and it's about a 20-minute drive to Mutianyu. Go at opening (around 07:30) before the crowds and tour buses arrive, then come back to the lake to relax in the afternoon — you save a lot of round-trip driving to the city.
🚗
Plan your transport ahead
There's no metro here; it's ~60 km from the centre and ~45 km from PEK airport. Self-drive, use DiDi, or pre-book the hotel's transfer, and leave a buffer for evening traffic on the way in.
🛁
Make the most of the spa and pool
After a day on the wall, Kempinski The Spa and the indoor pool are what you came for. Book a spa slot in advance, especially at weekends when the resort is busiest.
📅
Pick the season and check dates
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) have the best weather for the wall. Avoid Golden Week (October 1–7) and Chinese New Year, when prices spike. Resort rates swing by date — always check before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions — Yanqi Hotel by Kempinski

Where is Yanqi Hotel by Kempinski, and how do you get into the city?
The hotel sits on Yanqi Island in Yanqi Lake, in the Huairou District north of Beijing. There's no metro, and it's about 60 km from the city centre (Tiananmen / Forbidden City), roughly a 1.5-hour drive. The realistic way in and out is self-driving, a ride-hail (DiDi), or the hotel's transfer service. Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) is around 45 km away.
Is the Great Wall close to the hotel?
Very close compared with staying in the city — the Mutianyu Great Wall (慕田峪长城) is about 25 km away, roughly a 20-minute drive. That makes it ideal if you want to walk the wall first thing in the morning before the crowds, then come back to relax by the lake in the afternoon. This is the main reason many people choose to stay out here rather than commuting from the centre.
What does a room cost per night, and are there pricey periods to watch?
A standard room (Deluxe Room, ~54 sqm) starts at around ~¥3,800–4,800/night (roughly ฿19,000–24,000); you may see less on a deal, and lake-view rooms and suites run higher. A resort like this swings a lot with the season — Golden Week (October 1–7) and Chinese New Year see rates spike and rooms sell out fast. Always check the rate for your actual dates, and book several months ahead for long holidays.
How is Yanqi Hotel by Kempinski different from the Sunrise Kempinski (the round golden building)?
Both belong to the same complex on Yanqi Lake, but they're separate buildings. Sunrise Kempinski is the landmark round, golden tower, while Yanqi Hotel is the low-rise waterfront resort — quieter, with big resort-style rooms. They're about a 15–20-minute bike ride apart. Choose Yanqi for the low-rise lakeside resort feel; choose Sunrise if you want to stay in the iconic tower.
Who is this hotel best suited for?
It's the best fit for travellers who want a quiet escape by the lake paired with a Great Wall trip — especially families (Kids' Club, children's pool, lots of space) and couples after privacy. There's a spa, an indoor pool, a marina and tennis to fill a whole day on site. It's not ideal for travellers set on sightseeing in the old city every day, because it's far out and you depend on a car throughout.
