Hotel de Ladda — A European-Style Tower on the Mekong, Laos Across the Water

Turn onto Samran Chai Khong Road and the building stops you for a second — Hotel de Ladda is a dark-brick European-style tower with a clock turret, sitting right on the bank of the Mekong River in central Mukdahan. The detail guests repeat most is simple: every room faces the Mekong, so you open the curtains in the morning and the river and the Lao shore are right there. Downstairs there's a riverside pool and the De Paris restaurant, its walls painted as a Parisian streetscape — a combination you don't find in many small towns along the river.

Our Full Review

Hotel de Ladda positions itself as a Boutique design hotel on the Mekong, set on Samran Chai Khong Tai Road in the centre of Mukdahan. The building is a dark-brick European-style tower with a central clock turret and rows of arched windows — it reads more like an old hotel in Europe than a provincial Thai property. There are 47 rooms, and the thing that sets it apart from everything else in Mukdahan is that every room has a balcony facing the Mekong River. That single detail is what guests mention most: you wake up, open the curtains, and the river with the Lao shore opposite is right in front of you.

Rooms split between Superior, Deluxe Twin, Premier Corner Suite and Premier Suite. Several guests note the rooms are larger than expected, with spacious bathrooms, comfortable beds, and soft linens and towels. Each room comes with a fridge, minibar, safe, kettle, and a flat-screen TV — enough for a one- or two-night stop along the river. The Corner Suite and Premier Suite get a wider angle with the Mekong visible on two sides, which is the one to ask for if the view is the point of the trip.

Riverside pool at Hotel de Ladda Mukdahan at dusk overlooking the Mekong

Opened the curtains in the morning and the Mekong and the Lao shore were right there — absolute quiet, just the sound of water and the morning breeze, no traffic noise. The room was larger than expected, the bathroom roomy, the bed comfortable, and the linens genuinely soft for the price point. The building looks fully European from outside, photogenic from every angle, and the pool is outstanding in the late afternoon when the light drops over Laos. The De Paris restaurant interior is a surprise — Paris street murals on every wall, chandeliers in rows — breakfast had good variety. Excellent value for what you pay. If we come back to Mukdahan, we will stay here again without question.

De Paris restaurant with a painted Paris streetscape mural and chandeliers

The hotel restaurant, De Paris Restaurant, is painted with a Parisian street scene around the room, with chandeliers and blue striped chairs. Breakfast runs as a buffet with à la carte and continental options, and guests generally rate it as solid with an unusual, memorable dining room. Outside there's a riverfront terrace and a bar — in the evening you can sit with a drink and watch the sun drop over the Lao side of the river.

The other standout is the riverside outdoor pool, set right at the river's edge with a view across the Mekong to Laos — the late-afternoon light over it is genuinely good. Beyond that, the hotel has a massage room, a fitness centre, a garden, free private parking, and an airport transfer (charged separately). It also holds the ASEAN Green Hotel award for environmental management, which is a real credential listed on the hotel's own site.

Mekong riverfront terrace with tables facing the sunset over Laos

The location works in its favour — central and on the river, with the Indochina Market a short walk away, the cross-border shopping strip between Thailand and Laos. Hor Kaew Mukdahan tower and the main town temples are close by, while the second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge across to Savannakhet is about 11 km away, under 20 minutes by car. If you're using Mukdahan as a base before crossing into Laos, or touring along the Mekong, the position lines up well.

Hotel de Ladda

The score sits at 9.4/10 from 52 Trip.com reviews and around 8.7 on Booking. Guests rate the river views, the room size and the value most highly. The honest caveats, worth knowing in advance: the walls are fairly thin and you can sometimes hear the next room; a few reviews mention ants during the rainy season; and there's only one bedside table and lamp per room. These are minor limitations rather than trip-spoilers.

The bottom line: Hotel de Ladda works best for travellers who want a genuine Mekong river-view room and an eye-catching building at a budget-friendly rate. From around ฿1,500/night you get the full-room river view, a riverside pool, and an atmosphere unlike any other hotel in Mukdahan. If you want the widest view and a larger room, the Premier Corner Suite with its two-sided river outlook is the one to book.

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Hotel de Ladda is a Mekong-riverside option that delivers a full river view from the room and a striking building for a low-three-figure rate. It isn't a 5-star property, but it gives you a genuine riverside atmosphere that's hard to find in a town this size.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡If you want the quietest room — the walls are fairly thin, so ask for a higher floor or a Corner Suite with fewer shared walls → when the hotel is full you may hear the next room
  • 💡If the river view matters most — every room faces the Mekong, but the Corner/Premier Suite gets a wider, two-sided outlook → specify a full river view when booking
  • 💡If you're crossing into Laos — the hotel is about 11 km from the second Friendship Bridge → it works as a base before crossing to Savannakhet, under 20 minutes by car
