A laid-back riverside province on the Mekong facing Laos · the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge 2 · Mukdahan Tower river views · Phu Pha Thoep's surreal rock formations · the riverside Indochina Market · and Isan-Vietnamese food like nam neung
Mukdahan sits on the west bank of the Mekong in upper-northeast Thailand, directly across the river from Savannakhet in Laos. Long a trading post where Thai, Lao and Vietnamese cultures meet, it's anchored by the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge 2 and the riverfront Indochina Market. Beyond town, Phu Pha Thoep National Park's mushroom-shaped rocks, Mekong-side viewpoints and famously cheap riverside seafood make it one of Isan's most rewarding slow-travel stops.

Essential info and getting-around tips to help your Mukdahan trip run smoothly from the very first step.
There's no airport in Mukdahan itself. Most visitors take an overnight bus from Bangkok (~10–11 hrs) or fly to Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani or Sakon Nakhon and drive the remaining 1.5–2 hrs.
Carry cash for markets and street food. Cards and PromptPay QR work in hotels and bigger shops, and ATMs are easy to find in town (expect a per-withdrawal fee).
The town centre is small and walkable. For Phu Pha Thoep and Kaeng Kabao you'll want a rented car or motorbike, a songthaew, or a Grab/local taxi — public transport to the sights is limited.
Friendship Bridge 2 leads to Savannakhet. Many nationalities can get a Lao visa on arrival — bring your passport and a passport photo, and check the latest rules before you go.
