Atwell Suites Shanghai Wuning by IHG — Brand-New All-Suite 2025, the Highest Score in Its Group at 9.6
A score of 9.6 out of 10 from 1,941 real guest reviews within a few months of opening is not something you see every day. Atwell Suites Shanghai Wuning by IHG opened on 28 August 2025 as the first Atwell Suites property in Greater China, and it landed immediately at the top of our newly-opened Shanghai group by raw guest satisfaction. The core premise of the brand is straightforward: every room is a suite from the entry level up. The smallest Studio Suite starts at 35 square metres with a kitchen-style area — no standard rooms, no compromise on space. The hotel sits on Wuning Road in the Putuo district, a lively neighbourhood of local restaurants and everyday Shanghai life, though it is worth stating from the outset that the Bund and Nanjing Road are 20 to 30 minutes by metro from here.
The problem that Atwell Suites addresses is a familiar one: you book a hotel that looks good online and arrive to find a room that is essentially a bed, a bathroom and not much else. The brand's answer is to make every room a suite as standard. The Studio Suite at 35 square metres is the smallest option, and it includes a kitchen-style area with a fridge, microwave and counter space — useful if you are staying several nights, want to pick up breakfast ingredients from the Wuning Road market, or simply prefer not eating out for every meal. Early guest reviews compiled from multiple platforms describe the rooms consistently as "much bigger than expected" and "spotlessly clean" — which is not surprising for a hotel that opened in August 2025.
The three room tiers give a clear size-price ladder. Studio Suite at 35 sqm runs approximately ¥500–700 per night · Deluxe Suite at 45 sqm ¥650–850 · One-Bedroom Suite at 60 sqm ¥850–1,100, with the last option providing a fully separate bedroom for families or anyone on a working trip. Looked at against comparable five-star properties in Shanghai, these prices represent real value — many five-star hotels in Xintiandi or The Bund open above ¥1,400 and offer smaller rooms than the Studio Suite here.
"The rooms are genuinely spacious and everything is brand new. The team was responsive and helpful throughout — good value for an all-suite five-star in Shanghai."
The Putuo location on Wuning Road comes with real advantages and one practical caveat worth naming plainly. On the plus side, this is a genuine local Shanghai neighbourhood — morning markets, neighbourhood noodle shops, shengjianbao at prices locals actually pay, none of the tourist-district mark-up. If part of your reason for visiting is to see how the city actually lives rather than its postcard version, Putuo delivers that better than any hotel in Xintiandi. The caveat: Putuo is not a primary tourist district. The Bund, Nanjing Road, and the French Concession are all 20 to 30 minutes by metro, and the nearest station — Wuning Road on Lines 7 and 13 — is a five-minute walk from the hotel.
The metro connections cover the city reasonably well. Line 7 from Wuning Road runs to Jing'an Temple in about four stops and connects onward to People's Square and central Puxi. Line 13 goes east toward the Bund area with one interchange. For a guest who plans to spend most days in Xintiandi, the French Concession, or across the river in Lujiazui, it is worth knowing that 20 to 30 minutes each way adds up across a multi-day trip. Guests who are content to use the hotel as a sleep-and-recharge base and explore the city on day trips will find the connectivity adequate.
As an IHG property, the hotel is fully integrated with IHG One Rewards. Members earn points on every night, and Gold-tier members and above receive early check-in, late check-out and room upgrade requests where availability allows. The Atwell Suites brand's design language emphasises a residential feel over a corporate-hotel aesthetic — the common spaces are intended as a large shared living room rather than a conventional lobby, which makes the building more comfortable to spend time in between outings.
On pricing, Studio Suites start at approximately ¥500 (฿2,500) per night on regular weeknights. For a brand-new all-suite five-star in Shanghai, that is an unusually accessible entry point — the five-star tier in Xintiandi or The Bund routinely opens above ¥1,400. Expect ¥700 to ¥1,100 depending on room type during Shanghai's spring and autumn high seasons, and higher still over Golden Week in October and Lunar New Year. Even at peak pricing, the gap versus equivalent five-star hotels in more central districts remains considerable.
Two things worth stating honestly before you book. First, the review base of 1,941 guests is small relative to long-established hotels — Sofitel North Bund sits at around 8,467 reviews for context. A score of 9.6 built on early-adopter reviews tends to moderate as volume grows; the long-term picture on service consistency remains to be confirmed. Second, if your itinerary is centred on The Bund, Xintiandi, and the French Concession, a hotel in those districts will save you 20 to 30 minutes of metro each way, even though it will cost more. Atwell Suites Wuning makes most sense for travellers who are comfortable with a local-neighbourhood base and happy to factor in the commute — what they get in return is more space, newer facilities, and a noticeably lower room rate.
