An hour-by-hour itinerary with transport tips, costs at every stop, and a full budget breakdown — Taiwan's arts city at its best in a quick, perfectly paced trip.
Taichung sits squarely in the middle of Taiwan — an ideal stopover that rewards two full days. Day one is all about street art, street food, and cool architecture in the city; day two takes you out to the windswept Gaomei Wetlands for a sunset you won't forget. Everything connects easily by bus or taxi.
Each stop includes transport and estimated cost. Prices are in NT$ (NT$1 ≈ US$0.031). Adjust the timing as you like.
Drop your bags and head straight to Rainbow Village — a former military village where a 90-year-old veteran named Huang Yung-fu painted every wall, path, and step with vivid colors and folk figures. It's one of Taichung's most iconic photo spots and takes about an hour to explore.
An architectural marvel by Japanese architect Toyo Ito — the curving, cave-like structure is free to explore in its public areas. There are cafés and restaurants inside the building and in nearby shopping centers for a relaxed lunch.
A former Japanese-era ophthalmology clinic turned into an enchanting ice cream and gift shop that looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel — floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, dramatic lighting, and towers of pineapple cakes. Try the signature ice cream sundae and pick up some local pastries as souvenirs.
Taichung is the birthplace of bubble tea. Stop at Chun Shui Tang, the tea house credited with inventing the drink, and sip a pearl milk tea in the city that gave it to the world.
Taiwan's largest night market buzzes every night and is credited with launching several iconic street food dishes. Come hungry, eat everything, and browse the shops — this is a proper evening out.
Check out and leave your bags at the hotel. Stroll along this leafy linear park in the heart of the city, lined with independent cafés, bookshops, and small museums. It's the perfect way to ease into the morning over a good coffee.
Take a bus or taxi out to this coastal wetland reserve where a wooden boardwalk stretches across tidal flats flanked by rows of wind turbines. The scene — especially at golden hour — is one of the most photographed views in all of Taiwan.
Watch the sun sink behind the turbines at Gaomei, then head back to the city to collect your bags. From Taichung HSR Station you can zip north to Taipei or south to Kaohsiung in under an hour, or hop on a bus to Sun Moon Lake for the next leg of your Taiwan adventure.
Estimated from the itinerary above — flights and personal shopping not included. Accommodation is based on a shared double room (split between two).
* NT$3,200–5,000 ≈ US$99–155 per person — Taichung is easy on the wallet; most major attractions are free. Flights and personal shopping are not included.
