About This Trip

Chiayi in 2 Days, 1 Night — Food, Forests, and a Historic Railway

Chiayi is a city that international travellers tend to overlook, yet locals know it as a serious food destination in central-southern Taiwan that fully deserves an overnight stay. On day one you can check in and start eating straight away — a NT$40 bowl of Turkey Rice at Pen Shui, open since 1949, then an afternoon stroll through Hinoki Village, a Japanese-era cypress-timber district right in the city centre, and an evening at Wenhua Road Night Market for the famous sand-pot fish head. Day two kicks off early with the wooden Forest Railway chugging up to Fenchihu at over 1,000 metres — grab the legendary Bento box lunch, stop for a pour-over from Alishan-grown beans, and head back. This is a short, easy-walking, eat-well-every-meal kind of trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ · Common Questions Answered

Why is Turkey Rice only famous in Chiayi?
Chiayi was the centre of turkey farming during the Japanese colonial era, so braised turkey over rice became a local staple from that period. Pen Shui has been open since 1949, a bowl costs just NT$40, and this dish is nearly impossible to find elsewhere — Chiayi is really the only place that does it properly.
Is the Forest Railway to Fenchihu currently running?
The Chiayi–Fenchihu section is still operating, but you should check ahead as periodic maintenance work does affect schedules. The higher-elevation section up to Alishan remains partially closed. Check the Railway Bureau website for the latest timetable before your trip.
Can Chiayi work as a base for Alishan?
Absolutely — Chiayi is the main gateway to Alishan. From the central TRA station you can take the Alishan Bus (NT$231, about 2 hours) or the Forest Railway when open. If you want to catch the Alishan sunrise, staying overnight on the mountain is strongly recommended; otherwise you'd need to leave Chiayi around 03:00.
How much does a 2-day 1-night Chiayi trip cost?
Budget roughly NT$6,000–8,000 per person. Round-trip HSR tickets run NT$2,400–2,800; a mid-range central hotel costs NT$1,500–3,000 per night; food is very affordable (Turkey Rice is NT$40); the Forest Railway is NT$128; and souvenirs are entirely up to you.
What are the must-eat foods in Chiayi?
Turkey Rice at Pen Shui is first, no contest. Follow it up with sand-pot fish head on Wenhua Road, Fenchihu Bento box up on the mountain, and Alishan-bean coffee at Hong Sing. See the full Chiayi food guide.
Which area is the most convenient to stay in?
The TRA central station neighbourhood is the most convenient — you can walk to Hinoki Village and Wenhua Road from there. Expect NT$1,500–2,500 per night for mid-range options. If you prefer somewhere quieter, the area around Chiayi Park is just a short ride away. See 10 recommended Chiayi hotels.
