10 Best Onsen Ryokan in Kannawa & Myoban Wake Up to Steam Drifting Past Your Window Private onsen · walk to the hells · from ¥10K
Kannawa and Myoban are the two Beppu onsen districts where steam pours off the rooftops all day. Kannawa has deep-blue spring water and jigoku-mushi (food steamed over the 'hell' vents); Myoban sits highest on the hill with milky white-blue sulphur baths. Here are 10 ryokan and onsen hotels across both districts that score genuinely high on every platform — prices compared across Booking, Agoda and Trip.com.

♨️ Kannawa vs Myoban — two steam districts, two completely different moods
Beppu has eight hot-spring districts (the Beppu Hatto). But that postcard image of steam pouring off the rooftops of an entire town? That's mostly Kannawa. This is the heart of the 'hells of Beppu' (Jigoku Meguri) — deep-blue mineral water, vents steaming on every corner, and a centuries-old food culture called jigoku-mushi, where ingredients are steamed over the natural hot-spring vents.
Myoban, by contrast, sits highest of the eight districts. It's famous for milky white-to-blue sulphur water that's prized for the skin, and for the thatched yunohana-goya huts that have harvested mineral crystals from the steam since the Edo period. Different water, different altitude, different feeling.
Based on guest scores from Booking, Agoda, Trip.com and TripAdvisor — plus verification that each property is currently operating — here are 10 ryokan and onsen hotels across Kannawa and Myoban, ranked by score, review volume, standout feature and tier. From a 5-star bay-view resort to a ¥10K toji guesthouse. Scores 8.1 and above.
🚇
Getting to Kannawa & Myoban — transit context: Both districts sit on the hillside above central Beppu. From JR Beppu Station, take bus #2/5/24/41 up to Kannawa (about 20–25 min, ~¥390). Myoban is a little further up via bus #5/24. Several ryokan in this list offer a free shuttle from Beppu Station if you give an arrival time at booking (e.g. Sanso Kannawaen). The big advantage of staying in Kannawa is that you can walk to the hells — Umi-Jigoku, Kamado-Jigoku and Oniishibozu are all on foot. The ANA InterContinental sits higher up the hill, so you'll want the shuttle or a taxi (~¥1,500–2,000) if you head out at night.

📍 499-18 Oaza Kannawa, Beppu, Oita · on the Kannawa hillside above the city
Score 9.5 from 228+ guests — if you want the Kannawa hotel that makes you stop in the doorway, this is it. It's a 5-star IHG resort designed by Kengo Kuma, built into the Kannawa hillside above Beppu, and all 89 rooms (68–102 sq.m.) face Beppu Bay — there is no room here without the view. The signature feature is the infinity pool that appears to spill toward the bay; you sit there at sunset while the steam from the Kannawa vents rises in front of you. The onsen uses genuine Myoban mineral water from the Kannawa source, the kind that's noticeably good for the skin. Honestly, it's the most expensive option in this district, and the hillside location means you'll ride down to the hells — but if you came to Beppu to actually rest rather than rush around, this is the best stay in the area right now.
💡 Tip: Hit the infinity pool during golden hour, 30–60 minutes before sunset — that's exactly when the Kannawa steam rises and the orange light floods the bay. The Sunken Lounge seating is limited, so go a little early.
👍 Pros
✓ Every room faces Beppu Bay, 68–102 sq.m. · Kengo Kuma design
✓ Infinity pool + Jacuzzi · the best sunset in the district
Private deep-blue onsen in every room45,000 sq.m. garden + Noh theatreKaiseki dinner + breakfast included5-min walk to the sea hell
📍 Kannawa 345, Beppu City, Oita · heart of the Kannawa onsen district
Score 9.4 from 374+ guests — Sanso Kannawaen is the ryokan you picture when you imagine waking up to the sound of hot-spring water in your own private garden. It sits on the Kannawa hillside and is famous for naturally deep-blue spring water you won't find from other sources in the city. The feature no other ryokan here can match: every room has its own private onsen, fed from two springs on the 45,000 sq.m. grounds — plus Umi-Jigoku (the sea hell) is just a 5-minute walk away. After breakfast you can step out the gate and be at a hell in minutes. Kaiseki dinner with Oita produce is included, and there's a free shuttle from the station. Honestly, the per-person pricing makes it look pricey, and the standard rooms have smaller outdoor tubs than you'd expect — but for a genuine ryokan in the single best location in Kannawa, there's no substitute.
💡 Tip: If you want a large outdoor rotenburo comfortable for two, book an Annex room or above — the Standard rooms have a private indoor onsen but the outdoor tub is smaller. Email the reservations team before you book to confirm.
👍 Pros
✓ Private deep-blue onsen in every room · two natural springs
✓ 5-min walk to the sea hell · the best location in Kannawa
Only 6 rooms · maximum privacyPrivate indoor/outdoor onsen in every roomKappo-style kaiseki served course by courseQuiet Japanese garden in the Kannawa woods
📍 Kannawa, Beppu City, Oita · in a quiet wood in Kannawa, ~2 min by car from the hells
Score 9.2 from 179 reviews — if you want the Kannawa ryokan where you never have to see another guest, this is the one. Kappo Ryokan Kannawa Bettei has just six rooms, each a separate cottage set in a quiet Japanese garden, and every cottage has its own private onsen — indoor or outdoor rotenburo. The 'Kappo' in the name signals the real draw: kappo-style kaiseki, where the chef serves each course with real attention, using seasonal Oita ingredients. Guests rave about the silence, the privacy, and a dinner that doesn't quit. Honestly, six rooms means it books out fast in peak season and the per-person rate runs high — but you get a level of privacy that a larger ryokan simply can't offer.
💡 Tip: Six rooms fill quickly, especially on Japanese holidays and during the autumn-foliage season — book 2–3 months ahead. Flag any dietary needs at booking, because the kappo kaiseki is prepared per guest.
👍 Pros
✓ Only 6 rooms · the most private stay in Kannawa
✓ Private onsen in every room (indoor/outdoor)
✓ Kappo kaiseki served course by course · seasonal Oita produce
✓ Quiet Japanese garden · ~2-min drive to the hells
✓ 9.2 score · highly attentive service
👎 Things to note
✗ 6 rooms · very hard to book in peak season
✗ High per-person rate (kaiseki included) · not for tight budgets
✗ No big-resort facilities (no pool/gym)

📍 Honome, Beppu City, Oita · on the Kannawa/hells edge, 4-min walk to the hells
Score 9.3 from 53 guests — Akarinoyado Togetsu opened in November 2022 right on the edge of the hells, so everything is still pristine and it scores near the top of Beppu's newer properties. What guests highlight most is the location: a 4-minute walk to the hells, so you can do Umi-Jigoku and Kamado-Jigoku on foot without taking a bus. Rooms are clean Japanese-Western, and some have a private semi-open-air onsen. Reviewers also praise the attentive service, fresh food, and a varied breakfast buffet — the beef steak gets repeated mentions. Honestly, the review count is still small (53) because it's new, and it sits on the edge of Kannawa rather than dead center — but for a clean, new room at an accessible price within walking distance of the hells, it's excellent value.
💡 Tip: Since it's right at the hells, walk to Umi-Jigoku and Kamado-Jigoku early in the morning before the tour buses arrive (they tend to roll in after 10 AM) — you'll get the steam and the hells almost to yourself.
👍 Pros
✓ Opened 2022 · clean, modern rooms, everything still new
✓ 4-min walk to the hells · easy sightseeing on foot
✓ Some rooms have a private semi-open-air onsen
✓ Varied breakfast buffet · the beef steak earns praise
✓ 9.3 score · accessible price for a new property
👎 Things to note
✗ Small review count (53) · short track record
✗ Sits on the Kannawa/hells edge, not the center of the district
✗ Private onsen is room-dependent · choose your room carefully
#5 · Okamotoya (Myoban milky-blue water, operating since 1875)
Operating since 1875 (Meiji era)Milky-blue sulphur open-air bathJigoku-mushi cuisine + original yunohana pudding~3,300 sq.m. garden · highest district
📍 Myoban, Beppu City, Oita · the Myoban district, highest of Beppu's eight
Score ~8.7 (TripAdvisor #6 of 91 Beppu hotels) — if you want the milky white-to-blue sulphur water that Myoban is known for, Okamotoya is the first name people mention. It's a ryokan that has been operating since 1875 (the Meiji era). What makes people drive up the hill is the milky-blue open-air bath set in a ~3,300 sq.m. garden — Myoban water is reckoned the best for the skin among the eight districts. Meals are served as jigoku-mushi, steamed over the natural hot-spring vents, and this is the original home of the famous jigoku-mushi pudding. Some rooms were refreshed in 2025. Honestly, it's up the hill and away from the city, and parts of the building show their age — but for genuine Myoban water and 150 years of heritage, this is the answer.
💡 Tip: Stop at the Okamotoya Baiten shop by the entrance for the jigoku-mushi pudding and steam-cooked eggs — they're a Myoban signature people queue for. The milky-blue outdoor bath looks its best in daylight when the sun hits it.
👍 Pros
✓ Milky-blue sulphur open-air bath — the Myoban signature
✓ Heritage property operating since 1875 · TripAdvisor #6/91
✓ Jigoku-mushi cuisine + original home of the yunohana pudding
✓ ~3,300 sq.m. garden · quiet hillside setting
✓ Some rooms refreshed in 2025
👎 Things to note
✗ Up the Myoban hill · far from the city and the Kannawa hells, needs transport
✗ Parts of the 150-year-old building show their age · not modern style
✗ Remote · inconvenient if you want to walk the hells daily
#6 · Oniyama Hotel (rooftop bath + hell-steam cuisine in Kannawa)
Rooftop open-air bath + ground-floor bath'Hell Steam' cuisine cooked over the vents3 private onsen for rentHeart of Kannawa · ~1-min drive to the hells
📍 Kannawa, Beppu City, Oita · the heart of the Kannawa onsen district, ~1 min by car from the hells
Score 8.9 from couples on Booking — for a Kannawa onsen hotel that delivers value plus a rooftop open-air bath, Oniyama Hotel comes up again and again. It sits in the heart of Kannawa with onsen on two floors — the ground floor and the 6th-floor rooftop, each a different mood, and the rooftop open-air bath is one of the larger ones in the district. There are also three private onsen for rent. The food gets real praise: the 'Hell Steam' menu steams dishes over the natural vents, true to Kannawa's jigoku-mushi tradition, alongside a varied breakfast buffet. The central location means you can walk to the steam vents and the hells. Honestly, its TripAdvisor sits at 3 stars because the building reads like an older hotel rather than a luxury ryokan — but on onsen, hell-steam food and location, it's strong value.
💡 Tip: The 6th-floor rooftop bath gives a better view of the Kannawa steam than the ground-floor one — go up in the evening. And order the Hell Steam set that's steamed at your table over the natural vents; it's a uniquely Kannawa experience.
👍 Pros
✓ Rooftop open-air bath + ground-floor bath · two moods
✓ 'Hell Steam' cuisine cooked over the vents · genuine jigoku-mushi
✓ Three private onsen available for rent
✓ Heart of Kannawa · ~1-min drive to the hells · walk to the steam vents
✓ Good value · kaiseki + breakfast buffet included
👎 Things to note
✗ Older-hotel building · TripAdvisor 3 stars · not a luxury ryokan
✗ Busy in peak season · baths can get crowded on weekend evenings

📍 Ida, Kannawa, Beppu City, Oita · heart of the Kannawa onsen district, 10-min walk to the hells
Score 9.3 on Trip.com (9.7 from couples on Booking) — short on budget but want genuine Kannawa onsen? Beppu Kannawa Onsen Hiromiya is the one guests can't stop praising. It's a toji guesthouse (the traditional long-stay-for-your-health kind) that the same family has run since 1960. This is not a luxury ryokan — the tatami rooms are simple, many share a bathroom, and there's a communal kitchen where guests cook their own food (including jigoku-mushi steamed over the vents). What sends the score soaring is the owner, who looks after guests like family, plus access to a private onsen at the lowest price in this list. The location is central Kannawa — 5 minutes to Hyotan Onsen, 10 to the hells. Honestly, the owner's English is limited and the rooms are very plain — but for genuine local Kannawa at ¥10K, this is a diamond in the rough.
💡 Tip: Use the communal kitchen to steam eggs, vegetables and meat over the natural vents, jigoku-mushi style — the way Kannawa locals have done for a century. The owner will happily show you how; it's an experience a luxury hotel can't give you.
👍 Pros
✓ Cheapest in this list · from ¥10K · genuine Kannawa onsen
✓ 9.3 Trip / 9.7 couples Booking · the owner draws overwhelming praise
✓ Access to a private onsen · shared kitchen for your own jigoku-mushi
✓ Family-run toji since 1960 · authentic local atmosphere
✓ Central Kannawa · 5–10 min to Hyotan + the hells
👎 Things to note
✗ 2-star guesthouse · plain rooms, many with a shared bathroom
✗ Owner's English is limited · use gestures/an app
✗ No kaiseki or ryokan-style service · built for long toji stays

📍 Kannawa, Beppu City, Oita · the Kannawa onsen district, near Yama-Jigoku
Score 8.3 overall on Agoda — but 9.5 from couples on Booking, and that tells the story. Kannawaso is a small Kannawa ryokan whose selling point is a quiet, traditional atmosphere that's hard to find in a district full of day-trippers. It's a genuinely Japanese-style inn: tatami rooms, some with a shared bathroom, plus a hot-spring bath to soak in. Guests praise the tasty local food, the friendly staff, and a location within walking distance of Yama-Jigoku and the hells. Honestly, there's a 23:00–06:30 curfew and a no-party rule, and the rooms are simple as you'd expect from a small ryokan — but for a couple who want quiet and good food on an easy budget, the couples' score is earned.
💡 Tip: There's a 23:00 curfew, so plan to be back before then. This is the right pick for a night when you want dinner in the ryokan and a quiet soak — not a night out late.
👍 Pros
✓ Couples rate it 9.5 on Booking · quiet, restful atmosphere
✓ Hot-spring bath + local food that earns praise
✓ Genuine traditional Japanese ryokan · friendly staff
✓ Central Kannawa · near Yama-Jigoku + the hells
✓ Accessible price · two meals included

📍 Kannawa, Beppu City, Oita · the Kannawa onsen district, walk to the hells
Score ~8.3 on Agoda/Booking — Kannawa Onsen Hotel Sansuikan is a Kannawa onsen hotel whose draw is the panorama and open-air bath on the 6th floor: you soak while looking out over Beppu Bay, the city, and the Kannawa steam all at once. There are baths on both the ground and 6th floors for two different moods, and guests single out the English-speaking staff who handle international visitors well, plus a location within walking distance of the hells. Honestly, it's a 3-star hotel — the building and rooms show their age, and Wi-Fi is strongest in the lobby — but if you weight a steam view from the bath, a walkable hell-tour location and easy communication at a good price, it's a solid pick.
💡 Tip: Head up to the 6th-floor bath at sunset — you'll see the Kannawa steam drifting over the rooftops with the orange light behind it. That's exactly the 'Beppu steam' shot people come for.
👍 Pros
✓ Panorama + open-air bath on the 6th floor · sea + city + steam
✓ English-speaking staff · good with international guests
✓ Heart of Kannawa · walk to the hells
✓ Baths on the ground floor + 6th floor · two moods
✓ Good value · two meals included

📍 Kannawa, Beppu City, Oita · the Kannawa onsen district, walk to the hells
Score ~8.1 (TripAdvisor #22 of 53) — to close the list, Hotel Kannawa is a straightforward Kannawa onsen hotel that guests call good value for the Beppu Bay and steam views. It's a mid-range hot-spring hotel with a bath, a sauna and free parking. What reviewers single out is the staff who handle international guests well — warm service even if the building is a touch dated — and a location within walking distance of the hells. Honestly, the facilities are basic and the building shows its age — but if you're on a budget and want to sleep in Kannawa so you can walk the hells easily, this is a value pick whose service punches above its star rating.
💡 Tip: Ask for a bay-facing room at booking — in the morning you'll see the Kannawa steam and Beppu Bay together. And use the free parking if you're driving; it's an edge that several central-district ryokan don't offer.
👍 Pros
✓ Value · Beppu Bay + Kannawa steam views
✓ Good with international guests · warm service
✓ Bath + sauna + free parking
✓ Kannawa district · walk to the hells
✓ Accessible price · two meals included
👎 Things to note

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ — Kannawa & Myoban Onsen Ryokan, Beppu
What's the difference between Kannawa and Myoban — which should I stay in?
Kannawa is the heart of the 'hells of Beppu' (Jigoku Meguri) — deep-blue mineral water, the jigoku-mushi steam-cooking culture, and vents steaming on every corner. It's the easiest base for walking the hells and has the most accommodation choice. Myoban sits highest of the eight districts and is famous for milky white-to-blue sulphur water that's great for the skin, plus the yunohana mineral-harvesting huts. It's quieter. For a first visit, choose Kannawa (the hells are easier to reach on foot).
What do Kannawa & Myoban ryokan cost — are they worth it?
From ¥10,000/night at a toji guesthouse like Hiromiya · mid-range ryokan with kaiseki run ¥15,000–31,400/person · the luxury ANA InterContinental is ¥35,000+. They're good value because most include kaiseki dinner + breakfast and a soak in genuine natural hot-spring water. If you want a private in-room onsen, budget ¥30,000+/person; if a shared bath in a steam district is enough, ¥10,000–15,000 covers it.
Which ryokan can I walk to the hells (Jigoku Meguri) from?
Easy walking distance: Sanso Kannawaen (5 min), Akarinoyado Togetsu (4 min), Beppu Kannawa Onsen Hiromiya (10 min), plus Oniyama, Kannawaso, Sansuikan and Hotel Kannawa (all in the Kannawa district, walkable to Umi-Jigoku/Kamado-Jigoku). Need transport: ANA InterContinental (higher up the hill, ~5 min by car) and Okamotoya (up in Myoban). If the hells are your priority, pick a ryokan in central Kannawa.
Which ryokan have a private in-room onsen?
Private onsen in every room: Sanso Kannawaen (blue water), Kappo Ryokan Kannawa Bettei (all 6 rooms). In some rooms: ANA InterContinental (Club IC and up), Akarinoyado Togetsu (some rooms, semi-open-air). Mainly shared/rentable: Oniyama (3 private baths for rent), Hiromiya (access to a private onsen), and Okamotoya/Sansuikan/Hotel Kannawa/Kannawaso (shared baths). To be sure a room has a private tub of the right size, ask the reservations team before booking.
Why isn't Suginoi Hotel on this list?
Because Suginoi Hotel is in the Kankaiji district, not Kannawa or Myoban. Kankaiji is another of Beppu's eight hot-spring districts, on a different hillside about 15 minutes by car from Kannawa. Suginoi is an excellent onsen resort (its 5-tier Tanayu bath is famous), but it's not in the Kannawa/Myoban steam districts this list focuses on, so we left it out to keep the list on-theme — we have a separate Suginoi review. Same goes for Yamada Bessou, which is in central Beppu near the station.
What is jigoku-mushi, and which ryokan let me try it?
Jigoku-mushi (地獄蒸し) means cooking food by steaming it over the natural hot-spring vents that rise in Kannawa and Myoban. It's an old Beppu food tradition — eggs, vegetables, meat and seafood steamed in sulphur steam take on a flavour all their own. Where you can try it on this list: Oniyama Hotel (the Hell Steam menu), Okamotoya (jigoku-mushi kaiseki + the original yunohana pudding), and Hiromiya (a shared kitchen where you steam your own). There are also public jigoku-mushi kitchens in Kannawa where you buy ingredients and steam them yourself.
