Why visit Ranong?
Ranong sits at the southern edge of Thailand's Andaman coast and most travelers drive straight through — which means the ones who stop find it pleasantly uncrowded. The main draw is Koh Payam, a small island with no cars and limited electricity, white-sand beaches facing west, and some of the best sunsets on Thailand's Andaman side. Koh Chang Ranong (unrelated to the famous Koh Chang in Trat) is even quieter and more remote.
Ranong town is the ferry gateway and has a notable draw of its own: natural hot-spring mineral water, and a row of restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses in the old quarter.
🚇
Getting there: Ranong is roughly 3 hours by road from Surat Thani. Ranong Airport has a handful of daily flights from Bangkok (Don Mueang). Ferries to Koh Payam depart from the main pier (Tha Ruea Saphan Pla) and take about 1.5–2 hours. Koh Chang Ranong is about 45–60 minutes by boat.

📍 Hin Khao Bay, Koh Payam, Ranong
Phayamas is the only adults-only resort on Koh Payam, set on a quiet private cove called Hin Khao Bay. The teak bungalows are two-story with two bathrooms each. The owner runs the property personally and brews craft beer on-site — Phayamas Pale Ale and Island Brew get repeated mentions from guests as a highlight.

📍 Rueang Rat Road, Ranong town center
The B Ranong Trend Hotel delivers the best value in town. Loft-style rooms have raw concrete walls and high ceilings; the rooftop infinity pool with a city panorama is what guests mention most. Free parking and a central location make it the practical base before ferrying to the islands.

The Blue Sky Resort@Ranong sits on a hillside 15 km outside town. The infinity pool looks across the bay toward Myanmar — on clear days the view is striking. Buffalo-horn-shaped roof bungalows blend into the hillside. It suits guests who want sea views and genuine quiet without crossing to an island.

📍 Ao Yai Beach, Koh Chang, Ranong
Koh Chang Resort Ranong offers the most stripped-back island experience in the province. Beachfront bungalows sit on stilts at the water's edge — open the door and you are looking at waves. Koh Chang Ranong has no 24-hour electricity; power cuts after midnight mean star-filled skies that are hard to find anywhere else in Thailand.
Tip: Bring a torch and mosquito repellent. The beachfront bungalows are worth the price for the direct ocean experience, but if you need reliable amenities, look elsewhere in this list.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Quiet beach with few visitors
- ✓ Stilt bungalows open directly onto waves
- ✓ Welcoming owner
- ✓ Good food
👎 Things to note
- ✗ No electricity after midnight
- ✗ Bathroom cleanliness is inconsistent

📍 Koh Payam, Ranong, east beach
The Blue Sky Resort is the largest resort on Koh Payam. The Mangrove Villas sit inside a mangrove forest — guests can kayak directly out from their balcony at high tide. Loft villas with rooftop sun decks are more contemporary than most accommodation on the island. The 120-seat beachfront restaurant handles larger groups.
Tip: The east-facing beach is not Koh Payam's best; you will need to ride a motorbike to the west side for sunsets. The Mangrove Villa is the most distinctive room type here.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Mangrove villas, kayak from the balcony
- ✓ AC rooms clean by island standards
- ✓ Friendly staff
- ✓ Pool and restaurant on-site
👎 Things to note
- ✗ Pricier than other island options
- ✗ East beach not as attractive as the west side
- ✗ Lagoon can be muddy at low tide

📍 Rueang Rat Road, Ranong town center
Rattanasin Hotel has the largest review base of any budget hotel in Ranong (168 reviews) — a reliable signal for a guesthouse at this price point. The Sino-Portuguese building was renovated in emerald green tones that catch the eye. The morning market is a two-minute walk away, which partly compensates for no breakfast in the rate.
Tip: No breakfast included, but the street market right outside the door makes that irrelevant. Request a room away from the main road for quieter nights.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Attractive Sino-Portuguese renovation
- ✓ Central location, 2-min to morning market
- ✓ Clean rooms, comfortable beds
- ✓ Very affordable
👎 Things to note
- ✗ Roadside rooms get traffic noise at night
- ✗ No breakfast included

- ✓ Spacious rooms with mountain views
- ✓ Convenient central location

📍 Buffalo Bay (Ao Khao Kwai), Koh Payam, Ranong
Phayam Cottage Resort occupies a stretch of Buffalo Bay (Ao Khao Kwai) on Koh Payam's sunset side. A beachside swimming pool is the main draw. Both fan and air-conditioned bungalows are available, making it a middle-ground option for guests who want sunset access without paying Cede or Phayamas prices.
Tip: The AC Sea View bungalow is worth the step up if budget allows. During low season (May–October) the beach is very quiet, but some services may be reduced — call ahead to confirm what is open.
👍 Pros
- ✓ West-facing beach, good sunset position
- ✓ Beachside swimming pool
- ✓ Quiet garden bungalows
- ✓ Beachfront restaurant for sunsets
👎 Things to note

📍 Phetkasem Road, Ranong town center
Ranong Garden is the most affordable option on this list, an older city hotel on the main Phetkasem Road. The standout feature is a large parking lot capable of handling coaches and oversized vehicles. The in-house Fueang Fa restaurant serves straightforward Thai food at low prices. It suits tour groups or budget travelers who need a base without any frills.
Tip: Rooms on the interior side of the building are quieter than road-facing rooms. Breakfast is not included in the room rate but the hotel restaurant opens separately.
👍 Pros

- ✓ Friendly staff
- ✓ Clean rooms
- ✓ Central location
👎 Things to note

How to choose the right Ranong hotel
🏕
Here for Koh Payam
Choose Cede (west beach, best sunsets) or Phayamas (adults-only private cove) for the top-end experience, or Phayam Cottage if you want a beachside pool at a mid-range price. All Koh Payam accommodation requires a 1.5–2 hour boat journey from Ranong pier.
🏙
Staying in Ranong town
For full amenities, Tinidee Hotel (4-star, mineral water) is the strongest option. On a tighter budget, The B Ranong (rooftop pool from ฿700) and Rattanasin (heritage building from ฿650) both over-deliver for their price.
🌿
Prioritizing quiet
Phayamas Private Beach (adults-only island cove) and The Blue Sky Resort@Ranong (hillside, 15 km from town) are the quietest on this list. Koh Chang Resort is even more remote — with no power after midnight and very few visitors, it is as off-grid as Thailand gets.
💰
Budget under ฿800
Koh Chang Resort starts at ฿300 for garden bungalows, but requires a boat trip and has no 24-hour electricity. In town, Ranong Garden (฿600) and Rattanasin (฿650) are the most practical choices for travelers who want a low rate with working power.
Note: Scores and prices reflect data at time of review. Rates vary by season and availability. Prices shown are starting rates before tax. Island resorts — especially on Koh Payam and Koh Chang Ranong — sometimes close partially or fully during low season (May–October). Confirm directly with the property before booking.
