Green Island · Orchid Island · Kenting · Longdong · Xiaoliuqiu — each has its own strengths. Sea turtles, coral walls, aircraft wrecks, drift dives. Here is everything you need to know before you pick your dive destination.
There is no single best dive spot — the right choice depends on your certification level, what you want to see and how much time you have.
Green Island (Ludao) — Sea turtles, dramatic wall dives, 20–30 m visibility, saltwater hot spring bonus. April–October. Requires OW minimum.
Kenting + Xiaoliuqiu — Shallow, calm, shore-accessible. Discover Scuba available with no prior certification. Easy day trips.
Orchid Island (Lanyu) — Pelagic drift dives, hammerhead potential, deep reef, remote Tao culture. Advanced OW required.
Longdong Northeast Coast — 1-hour drive from Taipei. WWII Aircraft Wreck at 15–25 m. Cooler water but diveable year-round.
Real facts, real prices and the honest downsides too.
Why it wins: Green Island consistently produces visibility of 20–30 metres — among the best in East Asia. The flagship dive is Stone Lighthouse Wall, a sheer coral wall dropping past 30 m draped in sea fans and soft corals. Green sea turtles cruise the reef at 10–15 m and are seen on almost every dive in season. After the water, there is a saltwater hot spring on the coastline — the only one in the world outside Iceland. Soak in it after diving and life feels exceptionally good.
Beyond sea turtles: Orchid Island is Taiwan's most remote and least developed dive destination. The reward is genuine pelagic diving — whitetip reef sharks, manta rays on their migration route and immense schools of fish are all sighted regularly in drift conditions. Currents can turn fast and strong without warning, making this a poor choice for less experienced divers. The island is the homeland of the Tao (Dawu) people — use local guides exclusively and respect cultural boundaries.
Easiest access, no boat required: Kenting's Houbihu Bay (Back Bay) offers shore entry diving — no boat crossing, low current, warm shallow water. Perfect for Discover Scuba first-timers. For intermediate divers, the Maobitou drift dive along the point wall delivers an effortless glide through hard coral formations. Honest caveat: parts of Kenting's reef suffered bleaching between 2010–2020. Some sections have recovered well; others are still patchy. Ask your dive shop which sites are currently in good shape before booking.
The best dive day trip from Taipei: Longdong's rugged headlands shelter a series of dive sites along the cliff face. The highlight is the WWII Aircraft Wreck at 15–25 m — a wartime fighter encrusted by 70+ years of coral growth, now home to moray eels, lionfish and schools of glassfish. Water is cooler here (22–26°C) than the south, but visibility is excellent in summer. The big advantage: diveable year-round — on days when southern sites like Kenting are closed by swell, Longdong is often calm.
Taiwan's best odds of seeing a sea turtle: Xiaoliuqiu is a small coral island with an unusually dense population of green sea turtles. Your odds of encountering one reach 90%+ between April and September — even on a snorkel. Divers find turtles resting and feeding at 5–15 m on almost every dive. The logistics are straightforward: ferry across, dive or snorkel, return the same day. One honest note: avoid weekends and public holidays when the small island becomes genuinely crowded. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit is a different, far better experience.
