💡 The context: Taiwan sits on the edge of the Kuroshio Current — one of the strongest warm ocean currents in East Asia. This keeps water temperatures between 22–30°C year-round and drives exceptional marine biodiversity. But each site has different conditions, seasons and skill requirements.

Diver swimming alongside coral reef at Green Island, Taiwan
⭐ Best Overall
Green Island (Ludao)
綠島 · 33 km off Taitung
Ferry 40 min · Domestic flight 25 min from Taitung

Why it wins: Green Island consistently produces visibility of 20–30 metres — among the best in East Asia. The flagship dive is Stone Lighthouse Wall, a sheer coral wall dropping past 30 m draped in sea fans and soft corals. Green sea turtles cruise the reef at 10–15 m and are seen on almost every dive in season. After the water, there is a saltwater hot spring on the coastline — the only one in the world outside Iceland. Soak in it after diving and life feels exceptionally good.

Clear turquoise water surrounding Orchid Island, Taiwan
🌊 For the Adventurous
Orchid Island (Lanyu)
蘭嶼 · 90 km off Taitung
High-speed ferry 2.5 hrs or domestic flight 25 min

Beyond sea turtles: Orchid Island is Taiwan's most remote and least developed dive destination. The reward is genuine pelagic diving — whitetip reef sharks, manta rays on their migration route and immense schools of fish are all sighted regularly in drift conditions. Currents can turn fast and strong without warning, making this a poor choice for less experienced divers. The island is the homeland of the Tao (Dawu) people — use local guides exclusively and respect cultural boundaries.

Colourful coral reef in Kenting Marine National Park, southern Taiwan
🎫 Best for Beginners
Kenting Marine National Park
墾丁 · Southern Taiwan
4 hrs bus/car south of Kaohsiung · Shore accessible

Easiest access, no boat required: Kenting's Houbihu Bay (Back Bay) offers shore entry diving — no boat crossing, low current, warm shallow water. Perfect for Discover Scuba first-timers. For intermediate divers, the Maobitou drift dive along the point wall delivers an effortless glide through hard coral formations. Honest caveat: parts of Kenting's reef suffered bleaching between 2010–2020. Some sections have recovered well; others are still patchy. Ask your dive shop which sites are currently in good shape before booking.

Rugged cliffs and clear blue water on Taiwan's northeast coast near Longdong
🚗 Easy from Taipei
Longdong Northeast Coast
龍洞 · New Taipei
1 hr drive from Taipei · No island crossing needed

The best dive day trip from Taipei: Longdong's rugged headlands shelter a series of dive sites along the cliff face. The highlight is the WWII Aircraft Wreck at 15–25 m — a wartime fighter encrusted by 70+ years of coral growth, now home to moray eels, lionfish and schools of glassfish. Water is cooler here (22–26°C) than the south, but visibility is excellent in summer. The big advantage: diveable year-round — on days when southern sites like Kenting are closed by swell, Longdong is often calm.

Vivid coral and a sea turtle at Xiaoliuqiu island, Taiwan
🚤 Day Trip from Kaohsiung
Xiaoliuqiu Coral Island
小琉球 · 15 km off Donggang
30-min ferry from Donggang · Day trip possible from Kaohsiung

Taiwan's best odds of seeing a sea turtle: Xiaoliuqiu is a small coral island with an unusually dense population of green sea turtles. Your odds of encountering one reach 90%+ between April and September — even on a snorkel. Divers find turtles resting and feeding at 5–15 m on almost every dive. The logistics are straightforward: ferry across, dive or snorkel, return the same day. One honest note: avoid weekends and public holidays when the small island becomes genuinely crowded. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit is a different, far better experience.

Essential Practical Info

Before You Dive in Taiwan — What to Know

📋
PADI vs SSI — Both Fine
Taiwan recognises PADI, SSI, NAUI, CMAS and all internationally accredited certifications equally. No preference between agencies at any dive shop. If you want to get certified here, an Open Water course costs around NT$15,000 (3–4 days). Kenting and Xiaoliuqiu both have multiple good training operators.
🛡️
DAN Insurance — Do Not Skip
Get DAN Asia-Pacific dive insurance before you arrive. Hyperbaric (recompression) treatment is extremely expensive without cover. The nearest 24-hour decompression chamber is at NCKU Hospital, Tainan — the closest for Kenting and Xiaoliuqiu divers. For Green Island or Orchid Island, the nearest facility is in Taitung.
📸
Photography Rules
No flash photography near sea turtles. Flash startle turtles and disrupts natural feeding and resting behaviour. Keep at least 1 m distance; never touch, ride or chase. Inside Kenting NP, rangers actively patrol — fines for reef damage are heavy and real. Never fin-kick the seabed near live coral.
📅
Season at a Glance
Green Island / Xiaoliuqiu: Apr–Oct best. Avoid Nov–Mar (northeast monsoon, rough seas). Kenting: Oct–Apr best visibility on the western side. Longdong: year-round but avoid typhoon season Jul–Sep when dive cancellations are likely.
🚣
Recommended Dive Shops
Green Island: Green Island Dive (PADI 5-Star) · Xiaoliuqiu: Liuqiu Dive Club · Kenting: Caesars Dive Kenting (near Houbihu) · Longdong: Northeast Coast Dive. Book ahead — holiday weekends fill up fast at all sites.
⚠️
Orchid Island — Cultural Respect
No special dive permit is required, but use only local Tao guides. Certain areas of the island are sacred ancestral territory — entering without invitation is disrespectful. The Tao fishing calendar also restricts certain activities seasonally; a good local guide will know the current situation.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Diving in Taiwan

Do I need a PADI or SSI certification to dive in Taiwan?
Taiwan accepts PADI, SSI, NAUI, CMAS and all internationally recognised dive certifications equally. A minimum Open Water (OW) certification is required for most boat dives. If you have no certification at all, you can join a Discover Scuba Diving session at Kenting or Xiaoliuqiu with no prior experience needed. Getting your OW certificate in Taiwan costs approximately NT$15,000 and takes 3–4 days.
Which Taiwan dive site is best for beginners?
Kenting's Houbihu Bay and Xiaoliuqiu are the most beginner-friendly options — shallow 5–15 m water, gentle currents, and the option to shore-dive at Kenting without even getting on a boat. Green Island has the best overall diving but requires at least an Open Water certification, and most dives involve a boat entry at greater depths. Longdong also has good beginner sites but the cooler water (22°C in winter) can be a deterrent for first-timers.
When is the best time of year to dive in Taiwan?
It depends on the site. Green Island and Xiaoliuqiu: April–October (calm northeast monsoon, warm and clear). November–March the wind and swell can make boat crossings uncomfortable or impossible. Kenting: October–April (winter brings clearest visibility on the western side, less wind). Longdong: year-round, though typhoon season July–September brings cancellations. Avoid July–September for most offshore island diving if you have limited dates.
Do I need dive insurance? Where is the recompression chamber?
DAN (Divers Alert Network) Asia-Pacific insurance is strongly recommended for any diving in Taiwan. Hyperbaric treatment without insurance is very expensive. The nearest 24-hour decompression chamber is at NCKU Hospital in Tainan — the best-placed facility for Kenting and Xiaoliuqiu divers. For Green Island and Orchid Island, the closest chamber is in Taitung city on the east coast.
Can I use flash photography on sea turtles in Taiwan?
No — flash photography near sea turtles is prohibited. Flash light startles turtles and disrupts their natural feeding and resting patterns over time. Always maintain at least 1 metre of distance and never touch, grab or ride a turtle. Inside Kenting National Park, rangers actively patrol dive sites and can issue significant fines for reef damage or wildlife harassment. Do not stand on or fin-kick the seabed near live coral formations either.
How much does a boat dive cost in Taiwan?
A standard two-tank boat dive package — including tanks, weights and dive guide — costs approximately NT$1,800–3,500 depending on the site. Green Island and Orchid Island are at the higher end because of the ferry crossing costs built into the package. Kenting and Longdong are more affordable with shore access options. Xiaoliuqiu sits comfortably in the middle range at NT$1,800–2,200. Wetsuit rental adds NT$300–500 if you need it.
