What is 環島?

Taiwan's Greatest Cycling Pilgrimage

Why 環島 has become a defining challenge for cyclists from Taiwan and around the world

環島 (huán dǎo) — literally "circle the island" — is a signposted bicycle route called Taiwan Cycling Route No.1 (環島1號線) that traces the entire coastline of Taiwan. The circuit covers roughly 950–1,000 km, taking most cyclists 9 to 14 days to complete. Unlike other famous cycling routes, this one passes through real cities, old temples, rice-field plains, and one of Asia's most dramatic ocean highways.

The 2006 Taiwanese film Island Etude — about a deaf student cycling the island alone — transformed 環島 from an athletic feat into a national rite of passage. High-school graduates do it after exams. Burned-out office workers do it to find perspective. And every year, thousands of foreign cyclists add Taiwan to their bucket list specifically for this ride.

⚠️ Be honest about fitness: 環島 averages 70–120 km per day, with elevation gains of 500–1,500 m on harder stages. If 40 km already exhausts you, you need more training. Plan at least 2–3 months of preparation — knee injuries and illness mid-route are the most common reasons people abandon the trip.

9-Day Standard Route

Day-by-Day 環島 Counter-Clockwise

Starting west to build fitness on flat terrain before reaching the spectacular east coast

Day 1
Taipei → Hsinchu
~110 km · Head south along the flat west coast through Taoyuan. The easiest day — use it to calibrate your pace.
Day 2
Hsinchu → Taichung
~100 km · Across the western plains through Miaoli. The flattest, most forgiving stretch of the entire circuit.
Day 3
Taichung → Chiayi
~110 km · Through Changhua and Yunlin farmland to Chiayi, gateway to the Alishan Forest Railway.
Day 4
Chiayi → Tainan → Kaohsiung
~130 km · Through 400-year-old Tainan into Kaohsiung. Best food day of the trip — eat everything.
Day 5
Kaohsiung → Kenting
~100 km · Ride to Taiwan's southernmost tip. The Pacific on your left, the Taiwan Strait on your right — simultaneously.
Day 6
Kenting → Taitung
~110 km · Turn north up the east coast. The Pacific Cycle Route begins. This is what you came for.
Day 7
Taitung → Hualien
~160 km · The longest day. East Rift Valley or coastal Pacific highway — mountains right, ocean left, almost no traffic.
Day 8
Hualien → Yilan (Suhua Improvement)
~120 km · Suhua Improvement Highway (opened 2020, replacing the old banned route) — 200m cliffs above the Pacific. Avoid weekends Mar–Oct when tour buses crowd the road.
Day 9
Yilan → Taipei (Circuit Complete)
~80 km · Through the Xueshan Tunnel back to Taipei. Tradition: photograph yourself at the station finish sign. You did it.
Must-Ride Sections

Five Stretches Everyone Talks About

🌊
Suhua Improvement (Northeast)
The 2020 highway replacing the old Suhua route that cyclists were banned from. Clifftop ocean riding at 200 m elevation — unanimously voted the most stunning section. Weekdays only in high season.
🏝
Pacific Cycle Route (Hualien–Taitung)
Ocean left, Central Mountain Range right. Smooth tarmac, fresh sea breeze, almost no cars. Every cycling travel writer calls this section "the one that makes it worth it."
🌾
Western Plains (Chiayi–Tainan)
Flat, breezy, temple-dotted farmland. The easy days that let you refuel — Tainan's street food scene is the best in Taiwan and you'll need the calories.
🏔
North Coast (Yilan–Taipei)
East China Sea views, green sea cliffs and the emotional weight of finishing. Many cyclists describe the final day as the most powerful experience of the entire trip.
Central Cross-Island — Skip It (for most riders)
Highway 14 over the Central Range reaches 3,000 m. Suitable only for very experienced climbers. Also: check road conditions after any seismic activity before attempting.
🏆
Kenting — The Southern Turning Point
Taiwan's southernmost tip — where you photograph the "南端" (Southern End) sign and pivot north. Two oceans, one road, pure elation at the halfway mark.
Where to Sleep & Stay Safe

Giant Hostels, B&Bs and Road Survival

🏨
Giant Hostel Network
Giant operates cyclist-specific hostels in key cities along the 環島 route, priced ~NT$600–900/night. Bike storage, repair tools, and fellow riders who've done this before. Book ahead in peak season (Oct–Nov, Mar–Apr).
🏡
Cyclist-Friendly B&Bs
Look for "歡迎環島" (Welcome Huandao) signs. Guesthouses along the route are accustomed to cyclists — many let you bring your bike inside. Rates NT$800–1,500 depending on location.
🛖
7-Eleven as Base Camp
Every 20–30 km along the route there's a 7-Eleven with bike racks, toilets, USB charging, hot food and an ATM. You will never truly bonk on 環島 — Taiwan's convenience store density is unmatched anywhere in the world.
🛣
Shoulder Lanes
Most highways have 1–1.5 m shoulder lanes for cyclists. Always wear a helmet, use rear lights after dark and stay well left. Avoid long tunnels during rush hour — take a tunnel bypass when available.
⚠️
Suhua Weekends Mar–Oct
During cherry blossom and summer seasons, tour buses fill the Suhua Improvement Highway on weekends. Ride on weekdays — the road is quieter, safer and you'll actually enjoy the scenery.
🎒
What to Bring
Padded cycling shorts (the single most important item) · Gloves · SPF 50+ sunscreen · Electrolyte sachets · Rain jacket · 2 spare inner tubes · Helmet (rentals provide one but bring your own for fit)

FAQ

Common Questions About 環島

What exactly is 環島 (huán dǎo)?
環島 (huán dǎo) literally means "circle the island." It refers to cycling Taiwan Cycling Route No.1 (環島1號線), a signposted coastal circuit of approximately 950–1,000 km around Taiwan. Most cyclists complete it in 9–14 days. The 2006 film Island Etude sparked the tradition, turning huandao into a national rite of passage shared by Taiwanese students, office workers and foreign adventurers alike.
Should I cycle clockwise or counter-clockwise?
Counter-clockwise is strongly recommended: you start south down the flat western coast, building fitness and saddle time before tackling the more dramatic but hilly eastern coast. April cyclists also benefit from prevailing northeast winds that push you along on the westbound leg. Going clockwise means hitting the hardest terrain when you're least prepared.
How much does a Giant bike rental cost?
Giant shops are distributed along the 環島 route. A road or hybrid bike rents for approximately NT$400–600 per day. A touring package with luggage-transfer service (so you only carry a daypack) costs more and should be arranged directly with the Giant shop in your starting city well in advance of your trip. Helmets are typically included.
What does a Giant Adventures guided tour include — and cost?
Giant Adventures' flagship 9-day 8-night 環島 package costs approximately NT$60,000–90,000 per person. It includes a quality Giant bicycle, 3-star hotel accommodation each night, a support van that carries your luggage between each stage, an on-call mechanic, some meals and a certified guide who manages routing and logistics. Current pricing and availability: giant-adventure.com.
When is the best time to cycle 環島?
October–December is the optimal window: temperatures of 18–26°C, minimal rainfall, clear skies and autumn colours on the east coast. March–May is also excellent, with cherry blossoms and comfortable winds. Firmly avoid July–September — typhoon season brings 35°C+ heat, flooding and genuinely dangerous conditions for cyclists.
How fit do I need to be before attempting 環島?
You need a real fitness base. If riding 40–60 km on a road bike already feels challenging, you are not yet ready for 環島. The route averages 70–120 km per day with elevation gains of 500–1,500 m on the harder eastern stages. Train consistently for at least 2–3 months beforehand: increase your long-ride distance gradually, and aim to ride 3–4 times per week. Knee injuries from under-preparation are the most common reason people quit mid-circuit.
