Mount Moiwa — Sapporo's Night View by Ropeway and Cable Car

From the 531-metre summit, the whole grid of Sapporo spreads out below in a carpet of lights — one of Japan's "New Top 3 Night Views". You ride up by ropeway, then a little cable car nicknamed the Morris Car, to an observatory with a Lovers' Sanctuary, a planetarium, and a restaurant that looks straight out over the city. We'll walk you through what to see, the best time to go, and how to get there.

The Mountain Where Sapporo Lays Out Its Lights —Best at Sunset and After Dark

Picture standing at the edge of a viewing deck on a cold, clear evening, watching the sun slip behind the hills and the lights of a million-person city blink on one by one beneath your feet — that's Mount Moiwa, the green peak rising right at the southwest edge of Sapporo. At 531 metres it isn't tall as mountains go, but it sits in exactly the right spot, so the whole grid of the city fans out below, framed by the dark of the bay and the ring of mountains around it.

That view earns Mount Moiwa a real reputation: it's officially counted as one of Japan's "New Top 3 Night Views" alongside Nagasaki and Kitakyushu, and it carries the Japan Night View Heritage designation. Getting up there is half the fun — you ride a ropeway from the base to the mid-station, then change to a little cable car (everyone calls it the "Morris Car") for the final climb to the summit observatory. At the top you'll find the Lovers' Sanctuary with its bell and love padlocks, a small planetarium, and a restaurant with a wall of glass facing the city. This page walks you through it all — what to see, when to go, and how to get there.

🌃 Straight up, first off: the night view is the whole point, so come up around sunset and stay as the lights switch on — one ticket buys you both the daytime and the night view. Clear, dry evenings are best; if it's cloudy or snowing the view can vanish, so check the weather first. The summit is cold and windy all year, so bring a jacket even in summer. Prices and hours on this page reflect 2026 and may change — check the official site before you go.

Getting There

3 Easy Waysto Reach the Mount Moiwa Ropeway

The mountain sits at the southwest edge of the city and isn't on the subway, but it's still simple to reach. The classic route is the city streetcar plus a free shuttle bus — here are the three ways most travellers get up to the base.

OPTION 1
Streetcar + Free Shuttle

The classic route. Ride the Sapporo city streetcar (tram) and get off at the "Ropeway Iriguchi" stop — from central Susukino it's about 25–30 minutes. From the tram stop, a free shuttle bus runs up the hill to the Sanroku base station in a couple of minutes. Easy, cheap, and scenic.

OPTION 2
Taxi or Rental Car

You can go straight to the Sanroku base station by taxi or car — handy if you're in a group or short on time. From central Sapporo a taxi takes roughly 20 minutes. There's free parking at the base, so driving up yourself is a fine option, especially on a clear winter night.

OPTION 3
Sightseeing Bus / Tour

In peak seasons there are night-view sightseeing buses and tours that bundle the ropeway in. They're the most hands-off way to do it — you skip working out the tram and shuttle — though they cost more than going independently. Worth a look if you'd rather not plan the legs yourself.

🚋 Worth knowing: the streetcar runs as a loop through central Sapporo, so you board it near Susukino and ride round to "Ropeway Iriguchi". Don't skip the free shuttle bus from the tram stop — the base station sits partway up the hill, and it's a steep walk otherwise.

Tips for a GreatMount Moiwa Evening

A little planning turns a good visit into a great one — timing, weather, and what to bring make all the difference up at 531 metres. Here are six things people who've been wish they'd known first.

🌅
Aim for Sunset
Arrive 30–40 minutes before sunset so one ticket gets you the daytime view and the night view as the lights come on.
🌤️
Check the Weather First
Clear, dry evenings give the sharpest views. On cloudy or snowy nights the view can be hidden — check before you commit the trip.
🧥
Dress Warm
The summit is cold and windy all year. Bring a jacket even in summer; in winter, full cold-weather gear and gloves.
🎟️
Get the Combined Ticket
Buy the round-trip covering both the ropeway and the Morris Car — about ¥2,100 for adults — so you ride all the way to the top.
🍽️
Turn It Into Dinner
Book a window table at THE JEWELS to eat with the night view through the glass, instead of a flying photo stop.
🍜
Pair With Susukino
Come down hungry and head to Susukino for miso ramen or soup curry — see what to order in our Sapporo food guide.

Where to Stay

Where to Sleepfor a Mount Moiwa Night

Mount Moiwa is an evening trip, so it pays to base yourself in central Sapporo — Susukino or near Sapporo Station — so you can head up for sunset and come back down for dinner and drinks.

🏨 How to choose your location: stay around Susukino if you want to ride down off the mountain straight into the nightlife and walk back to your hotel after ramen · stay near Sapporo Station or Odori if you'd rather be on the subway interchange for onward travel · either way you're a short streetcar ride from the ropeway, so pick by your travel style · during the February Snow Festival, rooms sell out and prices spike, so book months ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions AboutMount Moiwa

Is Mount Moiwa worth visiting, and what is it famous for?
Yes — Mount Moiwa is Sapporo's signature night-view spot. From the 531-metre summit you look out over the whole grid of city lights spread below, framed by the mountains and the dark of the bay. It's officially counted as one of Japan's "New Top 3 Night Views" alongside Nagasaki and Kitakyushu, and it carries the Japan Night View Heritage designation. Most people come up around sunset and stay as the lights switch on, so you get both the daytime view and the night view in one trip.
How do you get to the top of Mount Moiwa?
You ride up in two stages. First the ropeway carries you from the Sanroku base station up to the Chuufuku (mid-station). From there a small cable car nicknamed the "Morris Car" climbs the last stretch to the summit observatory. The whole trip up takes only a few minutes. A round-trip ticket covering both the ropeway and the Morris Car is about ¥2,100 for adults (2026 prices may change).
How do you reach the Mount Moiwa ropeway base station?
Take the Sapporo city streetcar (tram) and get off at the "Ropeway Iriguchi" stop — from central Susukino it's about a 25–30 minute ride. From the tram stop a free shuttle bus runs up to the ropeway base station (Sanroku) in a couple of minutes, since the base sits up a hill. You can also reach the base directly by taxi or car, and there is free parking at the base.
What is the best time to go up Mount Moiwa?
Sunset is the sweet spot. Arrive about 30–40 minutes before the sun goes down, watch the daytime view, then stay as the city lights come on and the famous night view appears — that way one ticket gets you both. Clear, dry evenings give the sharpest views; on cloudy or snowy nights the view can be hidden, so check the weather first. The summit is cold and windy year-round, so bring a jacket even in summer.
What is the Lovers' Sanctuary on Mount Moiwa?
The summit is officially designated a "Lovers' Sanctuary" (Koibito no Seichi), a popular Japanese network of romantic viewpoints. There's a bell couples ring together, and a railing where you can fasten a love padlock — you buy the padlock at the summit shop. With the night view as a backdrop it's a favourite spot for couples, but it works just as well as a photo stop for anyone.
Is there anything to do at the summit besides the view?
Yes. The summit building has STAR HALL, a small planetarium running short star shows, and THE JEWELS, a restaurant with a wall of glass framing the night view — handy if you want to turn the visit into dinner. There's a gift shop and a café too. Honestly the view is the main reason to come, but these extras make it easy to spend an hour or two at the top rather than rushing back down.
