Penghu isn't built for day trips. But if you only have one day, flying from Kaohsiung is the only sensible option — 35 minutes each way, 5–6 hours on the island, and enough time to walk Magong Old Street and the ancient Tianhou Temple. Here's the honest guide.
Penghu (澎湖) is a 90-island archipelago in the Taiwan Strait, famous for crystal-clear water, the world-class Ocean Fireworks Festival, the iconic Double-Heart Stone Weir, and superb seafood. Most of that requires 2–3 nights to experience properly.
This page is for travellers who have genuinely committed to a single day and want to make the most of it — no sugarcoating, no filler.
For a single-day visit, flying is the only option that leaves you meaningful time on the island. The alternatives are explained honestly below.
Direct flight from Kaohsiung (KHH) to Magong (MZG) takes 35–40 minutes. Operated by Mandarin Airlines and UNI Air daily, multiple departures. Roundtrip price typically NT$2,500–4,000 — book 2–4 weeks ahead for better fares.
Earliest departures around 07:00–08:00; last return flights around 18:00–19:00. This gives you 5–6 hours on the island — enough for Magong only, not the outer islands.
The closest ferry port is Budai (布袋港) in Chiayi County — not Kaohsiung. From Kaohsiung city, driving to Budai takes 1.5 hours, then the ferry crossing is another 1.5 hours each way. Round-trip transit alone: 6+ hours. Ferry price ~NT$1,000 roundtrip.
More practical if you're based in Chiayi or Tainan. From Kaohsiung, the math simply doesn't favour the ferry for a day trip — you'd spend more time travelling than exploring.
If you can extend your schedule at all, staying 2–3 nights is the real answer. You'll see Double-Heart Stone Weir, watch Ocean Fireworks (Apr–Jun), cycle across Penghu Great Bridge, snorkel on Jibei, and eat your way through Magong's seafood market at leisure.
Fly in one afternoon, check in to a beachside guesthouse, and leave two days later. Magong hotels start around NT$1,200–2,500/night — modest cost for a dramatically better experience.
Budai Port is not in Kaohsiung: The nearest ferry terminal for Penghu is Budai, in Chiayi County — a 1.5–2-hour drive from Kaohsiung. If you're based in Kaohsiung, combined transport costs for Grab/taxi to Budai plus the ferry may not be much cheaper than flying, and the journey takes far longer.
Built around an early-morning departure from KHH and a late-afternoon return. All stops are reachable from Magong city centre — no outer-island ferry required.
No IDP? Rent an electric bicycle instead. No licence required, ~NT$200–300/day, top speed around 25 km/h. Within the Magong city radius that covers everything in this itinerary. Alternatively, local taxis are available and inexpensive by Taiwan standards — ask your accommodation to call one.
Per-person estimates in New Taiwan Dollars. Flight prices fluctuate significantly — book 2–4 weeks ahead.

Overnight comparison: Adding 2 nights' accommodation (NT$1,200–2,500/night) increases your total cost modestly — but unlocks Ocean Fireworks, Double-Heart Stone Weir, outer island hopping, and water sports. The marginal cost-per-experience ratio is dramatically better with an overnight stay.
Penghu's headline experiences all require an overnight stay. Know what you're trading before you book.
