💦 Why stay upriver near the waterfalls of Kanchanaburi?
The sights people really come to Kanchanaburi for — the seven tiers of Erawan Falls, Sai Yok Falls, Hellfire Pass and the Srinakarin reservoir — sit 50–100 km out of town. Stay in the city and you'll burn hours driving back and forth, arriving at the falls once the crowds are already there. The fix is to stay upriver or by the lake instead: be at Erawan before the tour buses, swim the upper tiers while it's still quiet, or paddle a kayak through the morning mist over the reservoir before 7am. This article gathers 6 resorts that genuinely sit upriver in the forest or out on the lake, near the waterfalls — from a hot-spring resort on the Kwai Noi River at Sai Yok to floating bungalows and rafts on the Srinakarin reservoir over by Si Sawat and Erawan. Every one has real guest reviews, prices compared across 3 sites and direct booking links — and all are a different set from the in-town hotels and raft houses we cover in our other Kanchanaburi articles.
🚇
Kanchanaburi has no BTS or MRT, but it does have a historic railway — the Death Railway still runs, with State Railway trains from Thonburi Station in Bangkok → Kanchanaburi → Tham Krasae → Nam Tok (the Nam Tok / Sai Yok Noi terminus), around 2.5–3 hours. The stretch where the train crawls along the curved wooden viaduct at Tham Krasae is a journey people make deliberately, to remember the Allied POWs and conscripted Asian labourers who died building the line in 1942–43 — ride it with respect. You can also reach the area by minivan or coach from Bangkok's Southern (Sai Tai Mai) or Mo Chit terminals in about 2–3 hours, or drive (around 2 hours via Highway 323). But the resorts in this article sit far upriver, with almost no public transport out there — you really need your own car or an organised tour. They fall in two zones: Sai Yok, on the Kwai Noi River (northwest, roughly 50–100 km out, near Sai Yok Falls, Hellfire Pass and the Nam Tok railway terminus) and Si Sawat, on the Srinakarin reservoir and toward Erawan (north, about 65–100 km out, near the seven-tier Erawan Falls and Huay Mae Khamin Falls, with rafts and floating bungalows out on the lake). Once at the resort, the upper waterfall tiers, the kayaks and the resort's own boats are the main activities.

📍 118 Moo 8, Tha Sao, Sai Yok, Kanchanaburi
If you want to stay upriver in Sai Yok and soak in your own private hot spring, Home Phutoey is the first name that comes up. It's a SERENATA-group resort on the Kwai Noi River deep in the Sai Yok forest, built in a timber log-cabin style. What sets it apart is the Onsen Villa, which has a private natural mineral hot spring on the balcony — you soak looking out over the Kwai Noi and the hills. On the grounds there's TreeTop Adventure, a rope-and-zipline course up in the canopy, and the Peace Park, with a museum commemorating the Death Railway. Hellfire Pass is about a 3 km drive away and Sai Yok Falls is close too, so it works well as a base for nature plus history. Rooms are air-conditioned, with hot water, clean — not a rough camp.
💡 Tip: If you're here for the private hot spring you have to book an Onsen Villa specifically — standard rooms use the shared pools. Soak in the early evening after a day's hiking. The resort is a long way from town, so stock up on food and fuel before you head up.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Natural mineral hot springs, both shared pools and private in the Onsen Villas
- ✓ TreeTop Adventure canopy zipline, fun for all ages
- ✓ Peace Park with a WWII museum; Hellfire Pass ~3 km away
- ✓ Air-conditioned rooms with hot water, clean, quiet on the Kwai Noi
👎 Things to note
- ✗ A long way from town, car needed; few dining options outside the resort
- ✗ Some standard rooms feel dated — ask for a renovated room

📍 220 Moo 4, Ban Kaeng Kaep, Tha Kradan, Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi
If you want a floating raft room that's genuinely close to Erawan Falls, Lake Hill Resort is the one reviewers single out for its setting and views. It's a small resort in Tha Kradan on the Si Sawat side, on the water that flows down from the Srinakarin Dam. There are rooms on the bank and red-roofed raft rooms floating on the water, some with a bathtub on the raft terrace so you can soak looking at the river and the hills. The talked-about feature is that every room comes with a free kayak and paddleboard — you can put in right in front of your room. And it's only about a 4 km drive to Erawan Falls, closer than most. Rooms are air-conditioned with a coffee machine; it scores 9.0 on Booking, with strong praise for staff and food.
💡 Tip: Book a Raft Room with the terrace bathtub early — there are only a few and they sell out. The entrance sign is small and easy to miss from the main road, so set your map pin. Paddle out at dawn for the mist before heading to Erawan while it's quiet.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Red-roofed floating raft rooms, some with a bathtub on the riverside terrace
- ✓ Free kayak and paddleboard with every room — paddle from your door
- ✓ Very close to Erawan Falls — a ~4 km drive to the gate
- ✓ Scores 9.0 · attentive staff, good food, peaceful
👎 Things to note
- ✗ Small, hard-to-spot entrance — use GPS; small property, limited rooms
- ✗ Breakfast choice is thin, no fruit/pastries; a long way from town

📍 Tha Kradan (Chong Sadao), Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi
If you want a small, quiet waterside place near Erawan, Le Bassin Erawan is a resort reviewers praise for its atmosphere and privacy. It's a small property of about 14 rooms plus four tents, in Tha Kradan on the Si Sawat side. It's named after Monet's water-lily pond series, and the rooms are set along the ponds and the stream, each with a balcony or terrace facing the water. There are two free kayaks for paddling out to explore, and hammocks, rope swings and beanbags scattered around the grounds to lounge in. It's about a 17-minute drive to Erawan National Park, so you can set off early and have the falls before the crowds. Rooms have a warm wood finish, and it scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor, near the top of the specialty lodging in Si Sawat.
💡 Tip: With few rooms it sells out on weekends, so book ahead. Paddling a kayak around the lily ponds and stream in the morning before heading to Erawan is the best of it. It's far from town, so bring food along.

- ✓ Small and private, peaceful, scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor

📍 148 Moo 1, Tha Kradan, Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi
If you want to wake up to a wide lake and quiet hills, Raya Buri Resort is one reviewers praise for its views and calm. It's a 4-star, 79-room resort in a Balinese style, out on the reservoir above the Srinakarin Dam on the Si Sawat side. The rooms sit on, and float over, the lake water, cut off from town, with nothing around but green hills and still water. There are kayaks and pedal boats for getting out on the lake, and the restaurant is set right at the water's edge looking over the dam. The resort runs trips to a nearby grape farm, Huay Mae Khamin Falls and cave temples. It suits travellers who want a properly peaceful nature retreat; reviews praise the views and the water activities, with a few noting some insects, as you'd expect by the water.
💡 Tip: The road up to Si Sawat is winding, so allow extra driving time and fuel up first. Paddling a kayak or pedal boat through the morning mist before 7am is the best part. Bring your own insect repellent — you're on the water in the forest.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Rooms on and over the lake above the Srinakarin Dam, wide views
- ✓ Kayaks and pedal boats on the lake, genuinely peaceful
- ✓ Balinese-style decor, restaurant right at the water's edge

📍 241 Moo 5, Tha Kradan, Si Sawat, Kanchanaburi
If you're a group or family wanting both a floating raft and a water park in one place, Lake Heaven Resort & Park covers that. It's a resort out on the Srinakarin reservoir on the Si Sawat side. It has a row of white, pyramid-roofed Maldives-style floating bungalows on the water, plus a floating water park out on the lake — a 5-metre climbing mountain, slides, water bikes and jet skis. There are rooms both on land and on rafts, for anywhere from 2 up to a big 12-person house. Rates are usually a per-person package including three meals a day. It's remote and fairly quiet, mostly Thai guests, with fine lake-and-mountain views — a good spot to swim and unwind.
💡 Tip: Check how many meals and which water-park activities a package includes at booking, as it's usually priced per person. The buffet is mainly Thai, so bring snacks if you're a picky eater. It's far — a 3–4 hour drive from Bangkok — so plan the travel time.

📌 Note: All prices are approximate and may change by date and season — always check the live rate and compare 3 sites before booking · November–February is the best season — cool, dry, with genuinely cold nights upriver in the Sai Yok forest and by the dam, and lovely morning mist on the water; Bangkok visitors book heavily and riverside and raft rooms sell out, so reserve 1–2 months ahead · March–May is very hot — the falls run lower midday, though the cool water is still a relief · June–October is the rainy, green season — Erawan, Sai Yok and Huay Mae Khamin falls are at their fullest, but park trails get muddy and slippery (leeches), boats and water activities can be weather-dependent, and heavy rain can bring localised flash flooding upriver — check the forecast and message the resort first if you're booking an upriver or lakeside stay · Kanchanaburi has no BTS/MRT but does have the Death Railway train (Thonburi–Nam Tok, ~2.5–3 hrs, over the Tham Krasae viaduct); these resorts are far upriver, so a car or tour is needed · Article by Wherebest.com
