⛴️ Why stay in Mae Haad on Koh Tao?
Mae Haad is the west-coast town where every ferry docks — a small working port that packs restaurants, dive shops, mini-marts, ATMs and a pharmacy into a few walkable streets. The real draw is that you step off the boat and walk straight to your room, with no pricey shared taxi-truck across the island, so arrival day is easier here than anywhere else, and on the day you leave you can walk from your room to the boat in time. Be honest about one thing: Mae Haad is a pier, not a wide white swim beach to sunbathe on all day — the real swim cove is Jansom Bay, a small bay about a 10-minute walk south, shallow and clear and good for snorkelling. This article gathers 6 stays in Mae Haad and Jansom Bay that are confirmed open and bookable now, from a beachfront boutique to a dive-school bungalow, each with real guest reviews, prices compared across 3 sites and direct booking links.
🚇
Koh Tao has no train, no BTS/MRT and no airport — the only way on is a ferry to Mae Haad pier. The high-speed catamarans Lomprayah/Seatran/Songserm run from Chumphon on the mainland (about 1.5–3 hr), or from Koh Phangan (about 1–1.5 hr), Koh Samui (about 1.5–2 hr) or Surat Thani. Most people fly into Samui (USM) or Chumphon/Surat and then take the boat. On the island there is no Grab — you get around by songthaew taxi-truck (pricey and shared), water taxi to the more remote bays, or a rented scooter — but be warned that Koh Tao's roads are steep, rough and notorious for scooter accidents, with the viewpoints and the east bays (Tanote, Hin Wong) especially steep, so inexperienced riders should take a taxi or a boat instead. The upside of basing yourself in Mae Haad is that nearly every stay here is a walk from the pier, the restaurants and the dive shops — you needn't touch a scooter at all if you don't want to. The nearest swim beach is Jansom Bay, a 10-minute walk south along the shore (a private cove with a 200-baht entry fee for non-guests, and no fins allowed).

📍 25/9 Moo 2, Mae Haad, Ko Tao, Surat Thani
Scoring 9.0, the highest in this article — Lücke Boutique Hotel opened in 2012 as a 14-room, adults-only stay in the heart of Mae Haad Bay. The beachfront rooms open straight onto the Mae Haad sand and the dive boats moored offshore, looking along the headland toward Koh Nang Yuan. Every room is individually decorated and has its own kitchen, which makes it a good fit for several nights. It's a few minutes' walk to the pier, the restaurants and the dive shops in Mae Haad town — no scooter needed.
💡 Tip: There are only a handful of sea-view rooms and the Junior King Suite, and they book out fast, so reserve ahead if you want the water view — the entry-level Standard rooms are garden or city view, so check the room photos before you commit.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Beachfront rooms open straight onto Mae Haad
- ✓ Full kitchen in every room — good for longer stays
- ✓ Walk to the pier, restaurants and dive shops in town
- ✓ Adults only, quieter than a typical hotel
👎 Things to note
- ✗ The priciest in this article, and sea-view rooms are limited
- ✗ A small property — no pool or big-resort services

📍 9 Moo 1, Mae Haad, Ko Tao, Surat Thani
Scoring 8.9 from 25 reviews — Ananda Villa is a family-run beachfront stay on Mae Haad, just 100 metres from the pier, about a 2-minute walk from the boat to your room. It mixes air-conditioned beachfront rooms that face the sea with cheaper fan bungalows set back in the garden, so you can match the room to your budget. The seaside restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner by the water. From here you can walk to the shops, dive centres and ATMs in Mae Haad town.
💡 Tip: Ask for a beachfront room when you book — the garden bungalows are cheaper but have no sea view — and the waterside rooms are quietest and best in the early morning, ideal for breakfast over the sea.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Just 100 m from Mae Haad pier — a 2-minute walk to your room
- ✓ Beachfront rooms face the sea, with a seaside restaurant on site
- ✓ Choice of cheaper fan bungalows or air-con rooms
- ✓ Walk to the shops, dive centres and ATMs in Mae Haad town
👎 Things to note
- ✗ Garden bungalows are fan-only, fairly basic and have no sea view
- ✗ It's a port, so there's boat and traffic noise when ferries come and go

Scoring 8.8 — Big Tree Boutique Hotel is a 12-room boutique stay in the Mae Haad area, about 700 metres from the pier, set on the main road behind town. The rooms are clean and modern with a private balcony each, plus a kitchen and fridge, suited to anyone who wants quiet over beachfront. There's an on-site spa and free parking, and it's about a 10-minute walk to the pier and the restaurants in Mae Haad town.
💡 Tip: There's no pool and it's not on the beach, so it suits you if you want a nice quiet room at a fair price — for a swim, walk down to Jansom Bay or Mae Haad beach, and book a spa slot ahead as treatment rooms are limited.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Boutique-styled rooms, each with a private balcony
- ✓ Kitchen and fridge in the rooms — good for longer stays
- ✓ Quieter than the seafront, with free parking
- ✓ Good value for a boutique room in the Mae Haad area
👎 Things to note

📍 Moo 2, Mae Haad, Ko Tao, Surat Thani
Scoring 8.4 from 269 reviews, with couples rating the location 9.3 — Port Station is a 3-star stay with fresh air-con rooms in the Mae Haad area, a 2-minute walk from the beach. The rooms are clean and white with wood floors, air-con, a balcony and an en-suite, from around ฿1,400. It's a good-value pick if you want a fresh, clean room near the pier without paying beachfront-resort rates, and you can walk to the restaurants and dive shops in town.
💡 Tip: The rooms are good value but it's a small place with no pool — walk down to Jansom Bay for a swim — and some rooms look out over the town rather than the sea, so book a Deluxe with a balcony if you want somewhere to sit outside.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Good value, with fresh clean air-con rooms and wood floors
- ✓ 2-minute walk to Mae Haad beach, near the pier
- ✓ Every room has a balcony and en-suite
- ✓ Plenty of reviews, a high location score, free parking
👎 Things to note
- ✗ A small place — no pool or on-site restaurant
- ✗ Not directly on the beach; some rooms face town rather than the sea

📍 Moo 2, Mae Haad Beach, Ko Tao, Surat Thani
Scoring 7.9 on Trip.com (7.2 on Booking from over a thousand reviews) — Koh Tao Regal Resort is a beachfront resort on Mae Haad with three pools, one deep enough for dive training, and an on-site PADI dive centre. The curved, multi-storey building sits right on the sand at the south end of Mae Haad, and every room has a balcony and a fridge. The beachfront Regal restaurant serves Thai and Western food, and you can walk along the sand into Mae Haad town — a beachfront option with a pool at a reachable rate.
💡 Tip: It's a large, long-running resort and room quality varies by block, so ask for a renovated or beachfront room when you book — and if you plan to learn to dive, ask about a stay-and-course package with the on-site centre.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Three pools, one deep enough for dive training
- ✓ On-site PADI dive centre with stay-and-course packages
- ✓ On Mae Haad beach, every room with a balcony, walk into town
- ✓ A reachable beachfront rate with an on-site seaside restaurant
👎 Things to note
- ✗ Mid-range overall score; room quality varies between blocks
- ✗ The building and some rooms are older — they look dated next to the photos

📍 7/1 Moo 2, Mae Haad Beach, Ko Tao, Surat Thani
The cheapest starting rate in this article — Crystal Dive Resort is a set of bungalows attached to a 5-star PADI dive school right on Mae Haad beach. The point is the stay-and-dive deal: rooms are discounted for course students (from around ฿300 during a course, ฿600 on a fun-diving day, ฿1,000 on a non-diving day). The simple air-con bungalows sit around the dive centre, steps from the sand, with two training pools, dive boats and a private pier. It's a great fit if you've come to Koh Tao mainly to learn to dive.
💡 Tip: The lowest room rates are tied to taking a course or diving with Crystal directly — without diving the room costs more — and the rooms are basic bungalows meant for sleeping after a dive, not a luxury resort, so know that before you book.
👍 Pros
- ✓ Stay-and-dive deal, with rooms discounted for course students
- ✓ 5-star PADI dive school with its own boats and pier
- ✓ Air-con bungalows on Mae Haad beach, two training pools
- ✓ The lowest starting rate in this article for divers
👎 Things to note
- ✗ The cheapest rates require a course or diving with Crystal, otherwise more
- ✗ Very basic bungalows aimed at divers — not a resort room
