A bayside district that's a tower-studded skyline by day and a sea of lights reflected on the water by night — we'll walk you through Landmark Tower, the Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel, the Red Brick Warehouse, the Cup Noodles Museum, and Osanbashi Pier, plus where to stay and how to get there from Tokyo.
Picture a district where a few minutes' walk gets you everything — curved waterfront towers, a colour-changing Ferris wheel, century-old red-brick warehouses, a museum where you make your own cup noodles, and a wooden pier you can climb for a free bay view. This is Minato Mirai 21 (Minato Mirai means "harbour of the future"), Yokohama's bayfront district built on reclaimed land as a modern city centre. Honestly, if you're in Tokyo and want to escape the crowds for a day by the water, this is the answer — and you can get here on a single train straight from Shibuya.
The charm of Minato Mirai is that it transforms after dark — a sleek, polished skyline by day, then the moment the sun sets the tower lights and the Ferris wheel reflect off the bay, turning it into one of the favourite photo and date spots of Yokohama locals themselves. On this page we'll walk the highlights one by one, tell you which neighbourhood to stay in, and how to get here without getting lost.
The district has two main gateways — Minatomirai Station (the private Minatomirai Line) sits right in the heart, while Sakuragicho (JR) is the gateway on the ropeway side. Pick whichever fits where you want to start walking.

🏙️ Landmark building1
At 296 metres, this is one of Japan's tallest buildings. Its base is the Landmark Plaza mall, and the 69th floor was the Sky Garden observation deck, reached by one of the country's fastest elevators (~40 seconds). Honestly, the Sky Garden is closed for a long renovation right now — but the tower and its mall are still the heart of the district, visible from every angle.

🎡 Amusement park2
A free-entry amusement park in the middle of the district where you pay per ride. The star is the Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel, 112.5 metres tall, with the whole wheel changing colour at night — one loop gives you a view of the bay and Landmark Tower. The roller coaster that plunges into the water is another favourite that people love to stand and photograph.

🍜 Museum3
An instant-noodle museum that's more fun than it sounds. The highlight is the My CUPNOODLES Factory workshop, where you design your own cup — choosing the soup and toppings — and take home a one-of-a-kind cup. It's great for families and kids, and a solid indoor activity to keep in your back pocket for a rainy day.

🧱 Shopping & events4
A pair of red-brick buildings over a century old, once port warehouses, now a hub of shops, restaurants, and seasonal events. In winter there's an outdoor ice rink (the Art Rink, roughly late Nov–mid-Feb), and the buildings look lovely both by day and lit up at night — an easy, relaxed stroll by the bay.

⚓ View pier5
An international cruise terminal whose rooftop is laid with wooden decking and lawn, open to walk on free, 24 hours a day. From here you get a 360-degree view — Landmark Tower, the Ferris wheel, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the Bay Bridge. Yokohama locals know it as a night-view spot that's prettier and quieter than the rest.
Yokohama Guide →One of Japan's first urban aerial ropeways, opened in 2021, linking JR Sakuragicho Station with Unga Park in the Shinko area — a ~630-metre run, floating about 40 metres above the district, taking around 5 minutes. It's both a shortcut into the Red Brick Warehouse zone and a high-up sightseeing ride in itself, with the gondolas changing colour beautifully at night.
Yokohama Attractions →In Minato Mirai you don't have to walk far — every mall and the bayfront has options, from quick food-court meals to restaurants with a bay view. To dig into Yokohama's best food (Kobe beef, ramen, and Chinatown included), continue to our food guide.
Food courts and restaurants of every cuisine gather inside the big malls right by the station — easy to grab a bite and dodge the rain. Many upper-floor spots have city or bay views to linger over, ideal for lunch mid-walk.
The bayfront side has cafés, craft-beer bars, and dessert shops inside the red-brick buildings — a great mood in the evening, perfect for a coffee with a view of the boats. It's a favourite hangout for locals.
If you want something more serious, it's a few minutes on foot or by train to Japan's largest Chinatown (street food and dim sum) and the eating-and-drinking lanes around Sakuragicho. Our food guide rounds up the best spots.
The upside of staying here is that you can walk to every highlight, and many hotels have rooms with a bay or city view — ideal for families and couples. See whether Minato Mirai is right for you before you book.
Everything lines up along the bay within walking distance — you can clearly see how it all fits into a single day, from Landmark Tower around past the amusement park, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the cup-noodle museum.
