🆕 New format

How 48 teams works (made simple)

2026 is the first World Cup to grow from 32 to 48 teams — more matches, more rounds, and a "Round of 32" that has never existed before.

1

12 groups of 4

48 teams split into Groups A–L, playing a round-robin — 72 group-stage matches in total.

2

Who advances?

1st + 2nd of every group (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-placed teams = 32 teams.

3

Round of 32 (new)

The first knockout round, created by the 48-team format · single elimination.

4

Last 16 → 8 → 4

Round of 16 → quarters (8) → semis (4), down to two teams in the final.

5

Final + third place

Losing semi-finalists meet in Miami; winners contest the final at MetLife.

Trivia: because of the extra Round of 32, the 2026 champions will play 8 matches to lift the trophy (up from 7), and at 39 days it's the longest World Cup in history.
