Orchid Island
in 2 Days & 1 Night

25-min flight from Taitung · Scooter loop of an ancient island · Eat fresh flying fish with Taiwan's smallest indigenous tribe

📅 Updated May 2026
What this trip is about

An ancient island where time moves slower — come for the culture, not a resort

Orchid Island is best experienced over 2 days and 1 night — enough time to scooter the 37 km island loop, visit the still-inhabited underground houses of Yayo village, watch sacred Tatala boats that are actually still used, and sit down to eat flying fish with a Tao family before the season passes. Day one: land and ride the full circuit straight away. Afternoon: soak up the villages. Evening: stargaze under a Milky Way you rarely see anywhere else. Day two: catch sunrise at Dongqing Beach, visit the Tao Culture Museum, have a proper flying fish lunch, then fly back to the mainland.

Day-by-day schedule

Hourly itinerary for both days

DAY
1
Fly in · Full island loop · 6 villages
07:30 AM
Travel to Orchid Island Airport from TaitungDEH Air morning flight from Taitung Airport (TTT) — 18-seat propeller plane, 25 minutes, NT$1,500 one way. Book at least 90 days in advance as seats sell out fast, especially during flying fish season (March–June) and holidays.
09:00 AM
Check in + pick up a rental scooterMost guesthouses on Orchid Island are meal-inclusive (3 meals included, NT$1,800–2,500/night). Rent a scooter from your host — NT$400–500/day. Bring enough cash before you arrive: ATMs on the island are limited and don't always accept foreign cards.
10:30 AM
37 km island loop through all 6 Tao villagesThe full circuit takes 2–3 hours at a relaxed pace. The 6 villages are Yeyou, Iraraley (look for Tatala boats on the beach), Ivarino, Imowrod, Iranmeylek, and Yayu. Always ask permission before photographing villagers. Never touch the Tatala boats in the villages — this is the most important cultural rule.
02:00 PM
Yayo Village — the only inhabited underground houses in TaiwanYayo (野銀) is the sole village where people still live in traditional underground houses. The low grass-thatched roofs are built to withstand typhoons; the living areas sit below ground level. You can walk through the open areas without entering private courtyards. Homeowners are generally happy to explain the architecture if you approach respectfully.
05:30 PM
Dongqing Beach — sunsetDongqing Bay (東清灣) on the northeast coast faces directly toward the Pacific. Waves can be strong — respect red flag warnings and don't swim when one is flying. The open sky makes this the best sunset spot on the island. After dark, there is virtually zero light pollution here — Bortle Class 1 skies, meaning the Milky Way is sharp and visible to the naked eye.
07:30 PM
Dinner at your guesthouse (meal-inclusive)Most hosts cook traditional Tao food — fresh seafood, wild boar, and local greens. After dinner, head back to the beach and lie down to watch the stars. The absence of light pollution is something you genuinely have to see to believe.
DAY
2
Sunrise · Flying fish · Return home
05:15 AM
Sunrise at Dongqing BeachGet there 30 minutes before sunrise. The beach faces due east, directly toward the Pacific — the predawn blue light before the sun appears is genuinely one of the most beautiful things on this island. Bring water and a windproof layer as the sea wind is strong in the early morning.
08:00 AM
Breakfast + visit the Tao Culture MuseumThe museum is near Dongqing and opens at 08:30. You'll learn about the flying fish lifecycle — which the Tao people regard as sacred — and see a full-scale replica Tatala boat with its traditional carved designs. Allow about an hour.
11:30 AM
Flying fish lunch at Yeyou — or a cultural meal at an underground houseMarch–June is the season when fresh flying fish is available. Local restaurants in Yeyou serve salt-grilled flying fish. If you want a cultural meal inside an underground house, you'll need to arrange this in advance directly with a Tao host — it's an experience you genuinely cannot find anywhere else.
01:30 PM
Check out + head to the airportTwo return options: fly back to Taitung (25 min, NT$1,500) or take the ferry (5 hours, NT$1,100). The flight is strongly recommended — the ferry is prone to delays of 1–3 hours or sudden cancellations when seas are rough. If you have onward flights from Taitung, always fly back and allow at least 2 hours of buffer.

Before you go

5 things worth knowing before you leave

🙏
Tao culture demands genuine respect
Never photograph villagers without asking first. Don't walk through villages in swimwear. Never touch the Tatala boats — this is the non-negotiable rule. If a local tells you an area is off-limits, step back immediately without arguing.
💵
Bring NT$3,000–5,000 cash before boarding
The only ATM on the island is a Chunghwa Post machine that doesn't reliably accept foreign cards. Restaurants, guesthouses, and scooter rentals are mostly cash-only. Top up before you leave Taitung city.
✈️
Book DEH Air tickets 90 days in advance
The plane seats just 18 people and sells out fast — especially March–June (flying fish season) and public holidays. Booking site: dailyairlines.com.tw. If you can't get a flight, the ferry is the fallback (5 hours, but fine in calm weather).
🐟
Flying fish season runs March–June only
Outside this window, flying fish is only available dried or preserved. If you visit July–February you can still explore the island fully — underground houses and snorkeling are year-round. Note: August–September is typhoon season; flights can be cancelled at short notice.
🌊
Build in a buffer if taking the ferry back
The return ferry regularly runs 1–3 hours late, or gets cancelled when swells are high. If you have connecting flights from Taitung, always fly back and allow at least 2 hours of buffer. Arriving a day early and staying in Taitung the night before departure is the safest strategy.
Frequently asked questions

FAQ · Common questions

Should I fly or take the ferry to Orchid Island?
Flying is better in almost every way — 25 minutes versus 5 hours, and the price difference is only NT$400. The catch: the plane has just 18 seats and sells out 90 days in advance. If you can't get a flight, the ferry is fine when seas are calm. A popular combo is to fly in and take the ferry back to enjoy the Pacific Ocean views on the return.
How should I respect Tao culture as a visitor?
The most important rule: never touch the Tatala boats (the red-white-black carved wooden boats you'll see in the villages). Always ask permission before photographing villagers. Do not walk through villages in swimwear. Stay out of any area marked as off-limits. When in doubt, ask before doing anything — the Tao people are generally welcoming to respectful visitors.
Is 2 days and 1 night enough?
Yes, for the main highlights — scooter loop, underground houses, sunrise and sunset. If you have 3 days and 2 nights, you can add a full day of snorkeling and possibly experience a flying fish ritual if invited by a Tao family. A day trip is not recommended given the travel distance — you'd also miss the sunrise, which is one of the best things about the island.
Where is the best snorkeling?
The best spots are Longmen Bay (龍門岩) and Xiaotiankeng (小天坑). The water is clear enough to see coral, colorful fish, and sea turtles. Rent snorkel gear from your guesthouse or the scooter rental shop. Do not stand on coral and do not take anything from the reef.
When exactly is flying fish season?
March through June is the real flying fish season. During this window the Tao people catch flying fish from their traditional Tatala boats, and you can eat freshly salt-grilled flying fish at local restaurants. Outside the season, the island is still absolutely worth visiting — underground house culture and snorkeling are available year-round.
How much does a meal-inclusive guesthouse cost?
Expect to pay NT$1,800–2,500 per night including all three meals. Options are limited — there are only a handful of guesthouses on the island. Book at the same time you book your flight. Most places are family-run by Tao or Taiwanese owners who cook local food. There are no chain hotels on Orchid Island.
