Narrow stairways, gold-rush history, and teahouses hanging over the Pacific. An hour from Taipei — and a world away from it.
Not just Spirited Away. Jiufen is a real place with real history — and it's even better in person.
Jiufen was a gold-mining town during the Japanese colonial era. When the mines ran dry, the town emptied out — and because of that, the narrow hillside streets were never modernised. What you walk through today is an authentic 1930s atmosphere that survived by accident.
The A-Mei Teahouse became famous when Spirited Away fans noticed its uncanny resemblance to the film's bathhouse — though Studio Ghibli has never confirmed the connection. Whether or not it's true, the atmosphere at dusk when lanterns flicker on and mist rolls in from the sea is something most travellers describe as genuinely magical.
The main street of Jiufen, built along the contour of the hillside. Narrow, atmospheric, lined with food stalls and souvenir shops. Walk it end-to-end, duck into alleys — the real Jiufen is in the side streets.
Tip: Arrive before 14:00 or after 18:00 to avoid the tour-group rush.
The famous stepped alleyway where the A-Mei Teahouse sits, with lanterns overhead and the Pacific below. This is the image everyone wants. Come at dusk for the full effect — the light is different every five minutes.
Tip: Face away from the teahouse for the wider sea view shot.
The red-lantern teahouse that looks like the bathhouse in Spirited Away. Tea for two runs NT$400–600 including taro balls and snacks. You're paying for the view and the atmosphere as much as the tea — worth it once.
Book ahead: Weekend afternoons fill up fast. Walk-ins are fine weekday mornings.
A coastal rock formation 20 minutes south of Jiufen by bus or car. Natural erosion has carved the rocks into stacked columns and arches — nothing like this anywhere else on Taiwan's northeast coast. Often skipped; absolutely shouldn't be.
Tip: Combine with the coastal road drive between Jiufen and Keelung.
Tip: The train+bus option is usually faster on weekends. Direct bus gets caught in highway traffic after 15:00.
15-minute hike from MRT for the best Taipei 101 viewpoint — golden hour is unmissable.
