Why It Matters

Why Taiwan Travel Insurance Is Non-Negotiable

Taiwan is safe — crime is low, infrastructure excellent, people friendly. But Taiwan's healthcare system is not designed for uninsured foreign tourists. The National Health Insurance (NHI) only covers residents with a valid NHI card. As a tourist, you pay full foreigner rates — and they are substantial.

For a serious emergency — a fracture, appendicitis, or cardiac event — a private hospital in Taipei may require a deposit of NT$10,000–50,000 (approximately THB 11,000–55,000) before beginning treatment. A 3-night hospital stay can easily run NT$150,000–300,000 (THB 165,000–330,000). Beyond medical costs, Taiwan sits squarely in typhoon season from June through October: Typhoon Bebinca in September 2024 cancelled hundreds of flights at short notice. The April 2024 Hualien earthquake disrupted Taroko Gorge access for months. These are not hypothetical risks.

7 Things to Check in Any Taiwan Policy

Not all travel insurance is equal — always verify these before purchasing.

🏥
Medical Coverage Minimum

We recommend at least THB 1 million. Emergency surgery or ICU in Taiwan can exceed THB 300,000–500,000 without warning.

🌀
Typhoon / Earthquake Cancellation

Some plans cover "severe weather" broadly; others require an official government warning first. Read the trigger conditions carefully.

📞
24-Hour Thai-Language Hotline

Most Thai insurers have this — save the number before you fly. Do not leave it to find in a crisis at a Taipei hospital at 2am.

🛵
Adventure Activity Coverage

Planning to hike Taroko, rent a scooter, or scuba dive in Penghu? These may not be included in base plans — check exclusions or buy a rider.

🧬
COVID-19 Status

Premium plans from Allianz and AXA generally include COVID-19. Budget plans may still exclude it. Confirm in writing before buying.

💳
Personal Property Limits

Phone or camera stolen? Per-item limits are typically THB 10,000–30,000. If you carry expensive gear, check these caps before purchasing.

Deep Dives

Each Insurer Reviewed — Strengths, Weaknesses, Claims

🔵
AXA SmartTraveller
Best for Families

AXA is one of the most recognised insurance brands in Thailand, and the SmartTraveller / SmartTravel Asia plans offer high medical limits with a genuine family option that covers the whole group under one policy. Strengths: High coverage ceiling, broad inclusions, Thai-language 24h hotline reachable via a local Bangkok number, smooth online purchase flow. Claims are generally processed in 14–30 days with Thai-language documents. Watch out for: Adventure activities such as trekking above a certain elevation, scooter rental (without local licence), and recreational scuba are typically excluded from the base plan — you will need to add a rider, which increases the premium.

👪 Family Plan 🏥 High Limit 📞 24h Thai 💻 Buy Online
🎯 Best for: Families travelling with children; trips requiring comprehensive coverage
🟢
MSIG Easy Travel
Most Affordable Entry Plan

MSIG Easy Travel is the most budget-competitive of the six — offering the lowest entry price while still providing respectable medical coverage. Strengths: Transparent pricing, easy online purchase via MSIG's website, Rabbit Care or Frank.co.th, fast-responding Thai 24h hotline, and a solid track record of straightforward claims settlement. Watch out for: The cheapest plan tier has a lower medical limit than we'd ideally recommend for Taiwan — upgrade to the Premium tier for a trip to Taipei. Adventure activity coverage is very limited across all tiers; scooter or scuba in Penghu is almost certainly excluded.

💰 Budget-friendly 💻 Easy Online ⚡ Fast Claims
🎯 Best for: Budget travellers; short trips; standard sightseeing without adventure activities
🟠
Allianz Travel Care
Highest Coverage Limit

Allianz Travel Care offers the highest medical coverage ceiling of the six — up to THB 10M on the premium plan. The network of partner hospitals in Taiwan includes major private hospitals in Taipei, and the pre-authorisation (cashless treatment) system means you may not need to pay upfront at all if you are admitted to a network hospital. Strengths: Exceptionally high limits, strong global partner hospital network, relatively smooth pre-auth process when you call the hotline immediately upon hospital admission. Watch out for: Higher premium than MSIG or Roojai; pre-existing condition exclusions are strict — undisclosed conditions at point of sale can void claims.

🏥 Up to 10M THB 🌐 Partner Hospitals 💳 Cashless Option
🎯 Best for: Business travellers; high-value trips; anyone wanting maximum peace of mind
🟣
Roojai Travel Insurance
Best Online Value

Roojai is Thailand's leading digital-first insurer — everything is designed to be purchased, managed and claimed via the app or website, with no intermediary commission inflating the price. The result is consistently lower premiums than going through a traditional agent. Strengths: Excellent UI/UX — quotes, policy purchase and claims initiation all take under 5 minutes. Thai-language 24h line responds quickly according to Google and Pantip reviews. Transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Watch out for: As a newer brand, Roojai has fewer years of large-claim history than AXA or Allianz. Reviews are mostly positive but the sample size on Pantip is smaller than for established players.

💰 Best Price 💻 Digital-first ⚡ Great UX
🎯 Best for: Tech-comfortable travellers who want the best value and don't mind a digital-only process
Muang Thai Life Insurance
Flexible for Seniors

Muang Thai Life Insurance stands out for its flexibility around age and health conditions — policies cover a broader age range and the underwriting is often more accommodating of pre-existing conditions than competitors. Strengths: Nationwide agent network across Thailand makes in-person consultation easy; fully Thai-language service from start to claim; MTL 24h hotline covers both general queries and emergency medical assistance. Watch out for: Purchasing online is not as smooth as Roojai or AXA — some plans require going through an agent, which adds friction. Adventure activity coverage is limited.

🧓 Senior-friendly 🇹🇭 Full Thai Service 🤝 Agent Network
🎯 Best for: Seniors 60+; travellers with pre-existing conditions; those who prefer face-to-face agent service
🔴
Tipco TravelGuard (AIG)
Global AIG Network

Tipco TravelGuard is underwritten through the AIG (American International Group) network — giving it access to one of the widest global hospital and assistance networks in the industry, including strong coverage in Taiwan. Strengths: AIG's international 24h emergency coordination is robust, hospital partnerships in Taipei give cashless treatment options at select facilities, and the plan is popular among frequent travellers on Pantip. Medical, trip cancellation and personal property coverage are all solid at the premium tier. Watch out for: Premium pricing above the mid-market rate; claims routing through the international AIG system can involve more documentation steps than a Thailand-only insurer.

🌐 AIG Network 📞 International 24h 🏥 Hospital Partners
🎯 Best for: Frequent travellers; business trips; travellers wanting a globally-recognised underwriter

Hypothetical Scenarios

When Things Go Wrong — Which Insurer Helps Best?

The scenarios below are hypothetical and illustrative — not drawn from verified real-world claims data.

🧳

Lost Baggage at Taipei Taoyuan Airport

The airline routes your bag to the wrong city on a 5-day trip. You spend 3 days without clothes or toiletries.

Best response: Allianz and AXA typically include Baggage Delay coverage that reimburses essential purchases (clothing, toiletries) within 24 hours of delay confirmation — without waiting for a full claim settlement. You'll need to keep every receipt and get written confirmation from the airline.

🤒

Food Poisoning — 1-Night Hospital Stay

Night market seafood leads to severe food poisoning. ER admission at a private Taipei hospital. Total cost: approximately THB 80,000.

All six insurers cover this scenario under any plan with THB 1M+ medical coverage. The key is to call the 24h hotline before paying — pre-authorisation can turn a THB 80,000 upfront payment into zero if the hospital is in the network.

🌀

Typhoon Flight Cancellation

A September typhoon hits Taiwan. Your return flight is cancelled. You need 2 extra nights in Taipei — approximately THB 6,000–12,000.

Allianz, AXA and Tipco have the strongest Trip Interruption clauses for weather events. Documentation required: written airline cancellation notice (not just an app notification) and hotel receipts. Book accommodation through official channels only.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Taiwan Travel Insurance

Is travel insurance required to visit Taiwan? Do I need it for a visa?
Taiwan does not legally require travel insurance for tourist entry — unlike the EU Schengen zone, which mandates insurance as a visa condition. However, Taiwan's healthcare costs for uninsured foreigners are high: hospitals can require NT$10,000–50,000 upfront before treatment in emergencies, and the national NHI system does not cover tourists. Travel insurance is strongly recommended even if not mandatory.
Will a Thai travel insurance policy actually pay out for Taiwan?
Yes. All six insurers in this comparison cover Asia including Taiwan under their standard international policies. Key things to check: the exclusions list (adventure activities, pre-existing conditions), the minimum medical coverage (we recommend THB 1M+), and whether Taiwan is specifically listed or falls under a broader Asia geographic scope.
Is COVID-19 still covered in 2026?
It depends on the plan and insurer. Allianz and AXA premium tiers generally include COVID-19 as of 2026. Budget entry plans from several insurers may still exclude it or treat it as a pre-existing condition if you have tested positive recently. Always read the Exclusions section or ask the insurer directly — policies update annually.
Can I buy travel insurance at the airport on departure day?
Technically yes, but we strongly advise against it. Airport counter prices are typically 50–100% higher than buying online, and you usually get only the most basic plan. More importantly, trip-cancellation benefits typically require purchase 7+ days before departure. Buy online in advance for best coverage and best price.
My phone was stolen in Taipei — what do I need to claim?
Plans with Personal Property/Baggage coverage will help, but with conditions: (1) File a police report at a local station within 24 hours of discovering the theft and obtain an official copy. (2) Most plans cap per-item reimbursement at THB 10,000–30,000 — check this before purchasing if your phone is expensive. (3) Items left unattended in public are often excluded. Contact your insurer's 24h hotline immediately after filing the police report.
Can I file a claim without original paper receipts?
This is difficult with most Thai insurers. Standard claims require: original medical receipts, a doctor's certificate, boarding passes, and written airline documentation for delays or cancellations. Photograph every document during your trip and back up to cloud storage immediately — some insurers accept digital copies for initial claim lodging but request originals to follow. Do not discard paper originals until the claim is fully settled.
