📌 TL;DR — Quick Summary
If you want to buy a SIM at Taoyuan Airport, go with Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信) — best coverage island-wide. Tourist plans start at ~NT$300 for 5 days up to NT$1,000 for 30 days. Process: find the counter in Arrivals → show your passport → pay → staff set up the SIM in your phone in ~5 minutes. Prefer to skip the queue? Book online via Klook and pick up at the airport counter.
SIM Card vs eSIM

Who Should Get a Physical SIM Card?

eSIMs are more convenient for many travelers — but physical SIM cards remain the best choice for certain situations.

📱
Phone doesn't support eSIM
Older or certain budget handsets don't support eSIM at all — a physical SIM is your only option.
📞
Need a local phone number
Calling hotels, taxis or restaurants locally requires a Taiwan number (+886). Physical SIMs include one.
👴
Easier for less tech-savvy travelers
No APN configuration needed — airport counter staff will set everything up and verify it works before you leave.
🗺️
Long trips with unlimited data
Most tourist SIM packages offer unlimited data at a flat price — no surprise charges, no throttling worries for longer stays.

Note: If your phone supports eSIM and you're traveling for 3–5 days, an eSIM may be more convenient and cost-effective. Read the comparison guide before deciding.

3 Major Carriers

Chunghwa, FET and Taiwan Mobile — How Do They Compare?

All three carriers offer dedicated tourist prepaid SIM packages at similar price points — but differ in coverage and strengths.

📶 Chunghwa Telecom
中華電信 · #1 Carrier in Taiwan
⭐ Recommended

Best nationwide coverage in Taiwan according to multiple public reviews and user reports. Particularly strong in areas outside major cities — Yehliu, Pingxi, Jiufen, Yangmingshan — where other carriers can be weaker. Tourist SIM plans are unlimited data (fair use policy: heavy usage may trigger speed reduction after threshold). Staff counters at T1 and T2 Taoyuan Airport.

Taiwan's second-largest carrier. Excellent signal in major cities — Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung — nearly matching Chunghwa in urban areas. Coverage can be somewhat weaker in remote mountain areas. Tourist SIM prices are similar to Chunghwa; occasionally offers better promotional deals. Counter available at Taoyuan Airport T1 and T2.

🏷️ Often Runs Promos

Taiwan's third-largest carrier with tourist SIM packages similar to the top two. Often runs promotional offers at Taoyuan Airport counters — such as bonus days or discounts. Good signal in major cities; coverage slightly thinner in rural and mountain areas compared to Chunghwa. Worth considering if their airport deal is better on the day you arrive.

Where to Buy

3 Ways to Get Your Taiwan SIM

Each option has its pros and cons — pick based on your travel style.

1
🛍️ Pre-order Online (Klook / Trip.com)
Most recommended · Pick up at airport counter
Book online before your trip → collect the SIM at the designated airport counter when you land. Skip the queue — no waiting in line during peak arrival hours. Prices are often similar to or slightly cheaper than buying on the spot (~250–400 THB equivalent for 5 days). Compare multiple carriers and plans in one place.

✈️ Buy at Taoyuan Airport
T1 and T2 · Arrivals Hall · Approx. 06:00–23:00
Counters for Chunghwa Telecom, FET and Taiwan Mobile are located in the Arrivals Hall of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Staff speak English and will install and test the SIM in your phone. Typical wait: 5–15 minutes during busy arrival hours. Standard pricing applies. Bring your passport — registration is required by law.
🛂 Passport required ⏱️ 5–15 min wait 💵 Standard pricing
3
🏪 Convenience Stores in the City (7-Eleven / FamilyMart)
Select branches only · Not recommended as first choice
Some 7-Eleven and FamilyMart locations in Taiwan sell tourist SIM cards, but not all branches carry them. You'll need your passport and it may be harder to find staff who can assist. Best used as a backup if your SIM runs out mid-trip. Not recommended as your first option — airport counters are far more reliable.

7 Steps to Get Your Taiwan SIM Working

Follow these steps from receiving the SIM to walking out of the airport fully connected.

1
Receive the SIM and info card
Staff will hand you the SIM along with a small info card showing your Taiwan phone number, expiry date and APN settings. Keep this card — you'll need it if anything goes wrong later.
2
Remove your home SIM — store it safely
Don't throw away your home SIM. Place it back in the small plastic envelope the new SIM came in, or in a zip-lock bag — you'll need it when you return home.
3
Insert the Taiwan SIM and restart
Insert the SIM in the correct slot (Dual SIM phones: slot 1). Power off and on once to let the phone detect the new network.
4
Set the APN if needed
Most phones auto-configure the APN. If internet doesn't work, set it manually: Chunghwa = internet or emome · FET = internet · Taiwan Mobile = internet
5
Turn off Data Roaming on your home SIM
On Dual SIM phones, make sure your home SIM's data roaming is off so it doesn't accidentally connect and rack up roaming charges. Set Mobile Data to use the Taiwan SIM.
6
Test signal and internet
Open Google Maps or any website. It should load normally. Check the status bar for 4G or 5G signal bars. If it's not working, ask the counter staff to check before you walk away.
7
Confirm everything works before leaving the counter
Do a quick test at the counter before walking off. This is your best — and easiest — opportunity to get any issues resolved on the spot. Staff can fix most problems in minutes.
4G & 5G Signal

5G in Taiwan — Where Does It Work?

Taiwan has a strong 4G infrastructure island-wide. 5G is expanding rapidly in major urban centers.

🏙️
Central Taipei / Xinyi / Da-an
5G covers most of the major business and tourist areas. Estimated download speeds approximately 200–500 Mbps on 5G (varies by carrier, load and device).
⚡ Mostly 5G
🚇
MRT Underground & Stations
4G LTE throughout the Taipei MRT system. Estimated speeds approximately 30–150 Mbps — more than enough for LINE, Google Maps and video streaming.
📶 Strong 4G LTE
🏔️
Mountain Areas / Day Trips
Jiufen, Yehliu, Yangmingshan, Pingxi — Chunghwa offers the best 4G in these areas. FET and Taiwan Mobile may have occasional weak-signal spots on winding mountain roads.
📶 4G (Chunghwa best)
🛤️
Inter-city Rail / HSR
Good 4G signal between major cities (Taipei–Kaohsiung–Taichung). Brief dead zones may occur in tunnels or through some mountain terrain.
📶 4G Good (except tunnels)

📌 Note: All speeds shown are approximate estimates under normal conditions. Actual speeds depend on carrier, device, network congestion and environment. For everyday travel use, 4G is fully sufficient for everything you'll need.

Before You Buy

7 Things to Know Before Buying a Taiwan SIM

🛂
Always bring your passport
Taiwan law requires passport registration for all SIM purchases. You cannot buy without it — no exceptions.
💡
Store your home SIM safely
Don't throw it away. Put it in the small plastic pouch that came with the new SIM, or a zip-lock bag. You'll need it on your return flight.
🧾
Ask for a receipt and info card
The small info card shows your Taiwan number, expiry date and APN settings. Keep it throughout your trip for reference.
📲
Carrier SMS may be in Chinese
Notifications from the carrier will arrive in Chinese. Download Google Translate before your trip so you can read them quickly if needed.
💳
SIM card and EasyCard are separate
EasyCard is for MRT/bus transit — it's not related to your mobile SIM. You'll need to get an EasyCard separately. See the MRT Guide.
📞
Use LINE or WhatsApp for calls home
International calls via a Taiwan SIM are expensive (~$1.50+/min). Use LINE Call, WhatsApp or FaceTime over data or WiFi instead.
📌
All tourist SIMs are nano-SIM size
Taiwan tourist SIMs come pre-cut to nano-SIM size. If you need an adapter (unlikely), ask the counter staff — they can provide one for free.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Taiwan SIM Cards

Can I use a Taiwan SIM card in Hong Kong, Macau or mainland China?
Taiwan tourist SIM cards from Chunghwa Telecom, FarEasTone and Taiwan Mobile are designed for use within Taiwan only. They do not support roaming to Hong Kong, Macau or mainland China. If you need connectivity across multiple countries, consider an international eSIM like Airalo, or purchase a separate SIM in each country. Always check your specific plan's terms before traveling.
I bought a 10-day SIM but I'm only staying 5 days. What happens to the unused days?
Taiwan tourist SIMs start counting from the moment of first activation, not the purchase date. If you buy a 10-day plan but only use it for 5 days, the remaining 5 days expire and cannot be refunded or transferred. Choose a plan that closely matches your trip length — if in doubt, go one tier up to avoid running out early rather than paying for too many days.
Does the Taiwan SIM include a phone number? Can I receive verification SMS from foreign apps?
Most tourist SIMs include a local phone number with a Taiwan country code (+886) — not your home country code. Apps that require SMS verification to a specific home number (e.g., your Thai +66 number) will not accept a Taiwanese number. Verify all important apps before departure. On a Dual SIM phone, keep your home SIM active in slot 2 specifically for receiving verification SMS, while using the Taiwan SIM for data.
How different are 4G and 5G speeds in Taiwan? Is 5G worth seeking out?
For typical travel use — navigation, messaging, social media, video calls — 4G is perfectly sufficient. 5G offers faster speeds in central urban areas (approximately 200–500 Mbps vs 4G's 30–150 Mbps) but the difference is rarely noticeable day-to-day. If your SIM supports 5G and your phone is compatible, you'll get 5G automatically in supported areas at no extra charge. There's no need to pay a premium specifically for 5G.
I lost my SIM mid-trip. What should I do?
The simplest solution is to buy a new SIM — they're inexpensive (NT$300–500) and available at Taoyuan Airport counters, select 7-Eleven locations and carrier service centers. You'll need your passport. Use hotel or café WiFi in the meantime. To replace a lost SIM and keep the same number, you'll need to visit the carrier's service center directly.
Can I switch carriers mid-trip?
Yes — you can buy a new SIM from a different carrier at any time, without needing to return the old one (prepaid SIMs are non-refundable). That said, all three major carriers in Taiwan offer strong coverage overall, so switching mid-trip is rarely necessary. If you're experiencing signal issues, try restarting your phone and manually setting the APN first before concluding you need to switch.
Where exactly at Taoyuan Airport can I buy a SIM?
Chunghwa Telecom, FarEasTone and Taiwan Mobile all have staffed counters in the Arrivals Hall of both Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2) at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. They are typically open approximately 06:00–23:00 (hours may vary — check in advance if you're arriving very early or late). Staff speak English and will install the SIM in your phone and verify it's working before you leave.
