Ask any seasoned Taiwan traveler about the best month to visit, and most will say October. Temperatures sit at a comfortable 20-26°C, rainfall is the lowest in half a year, typhoons are nearly gone, and the first autumn leaves begin to turn at the end of the month — all before November's foliage rush arrives.

Most first-timers plan around cherry blossoms in March, but repeat travelers know October is the golden month. Rain drops sharply from September, typhoons are mostly gone, and Taipei settles at 22-24°C — 6-7°C cooler than mid-September. Late October brings the first turning leaves on the high mountains, persimmons and sweet potatoes flood the markets, and crowds are still lighter than November's foliage peak.
October also brings National Day (10/10) with fireworks in Taipei, and sometimes Mid-Autumn Moon with mooncakes and family barbecues. Hotels are mid-tier — neither peak nor low — averaging NT$3,000-4,500/day for mid-range travelers. HSR Early Bird discounts up to 35% are widely available. If you want one month balancing weather, price, crowds, and seasonal experiences, October is hard to beat.
The Wuhuayan area starts changing color in late October. Maples and deciduous trees turn orange-red — the most accessible foliage spot in Taiwan. Reachable by rental car from Taichung in ~3 hours. Book farm accommodation 2 months ahead.
Taiwan's highest road-accessible peak. Maples and acacias change in elevation bands. Drive up from Cingjing (~1 hr). Daytime 10-15°C, often with a sea of clouds rolling below the summit.
The Taipei alternative — fields of silvergrass in silver-white waves Sept-Nov. Best at Qingtiangang and Xiaoyoukeng. Bus 260 from MRT Jiantan. Beautiful even on overcast days.
October is perfect for cycling Sun Moon Lake — not hot, not cold, low rain. CNN ranks the lakeshore trail in its Top 10 globally. E-bikes NT$300-500/day. 4-5 hours to circumnavigate.
The classic day trip works best in October — Jiufen's lanes are cool and dry instead of foggy, and Shifen's sky lanterns fly clean without summer humidity. See our full day-trip guide.
Parades and fireworks at the Presidential Office plaza — free, but Ximen/Taipei Main get crowded. Watch from a nearby park instead.
Some years it falls in October (2026 is Sept 25 — just before). Taiwanese families barbecue outdoors. Mooncakes and pomelos fill the shops.
Outdoor festivals carry from summer into October. Taipei Arts Festival runs all month — exhibits at TFAM and MOCA Taipei.
