EasyCard vs iPass vs iCash 2.0
Which Taiwan IC Card Do You Actually Need?

Taiwan has three competing stored-value cards. The honest answer: since 2018 all three work on every MRT, bus and YouBike across the island. The real differences come down to where you're based, which convenience store you prefer, and whether you want a limited-edition design.

💡 The short answer: Basing in Taipei → get EasyCard · Basing in Kaohsiung or the south → get iPass · iCash 2.0 is for FamilyMart loyalists or limited-edition collectors
All three cards work on all MRT lines. None of them is a wrong choice — this is genuinely a low-stakes decision for most travellers.
3 Taiwan IC Cards

What Each Card Is — and Why Three Exist

Three cards exist because three separate issuers launched at different times in different cities. Each has a distinct home base and reason for being.

🔵
EasyCard 悠遊卡
Home city: Taipei · Issued by EasyCard Corporation (private company) in 2002 · The most recognised card among international tourists · Collaborates with artists and characters on limited-edition designs year-round
🟢
iPass 一卡通
Home city: Kaohsiung · Issued by iPASS Corporation in 2007 · Originally a Kaohsiung-only MRT card · Expanded nationwide after 2018 · Strong following throughout central and southern Taiwan
🟠
iCash 2.0 愛金卡
Issuer: FamilyMart convenience store chain · First version 2014, version 2.0 launched 2017 · Its core advantage is Open Point loyalty points earned on every FamilyMart purchase · Buy and top up exclusively at FamilyMart
✅ Cross-Acceptance Reality (since 2018): All three cards work on Taipei MRT · Kaohsiung MRT · TRA local trains · City buses nationwide · YouBike 2.0 in every city · Most convenience stores · The remaining differences are partner discounts per brand — not transit access.

Each Card Explained — What You Actually Get

🔵
EasyCard 悠遊卡
Default choice for Taipei-based trips

Strengths: Purchased and topped up at every Taipei MRT service counter, 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK Mart, and Carrefour — by far the widest purchase network of the three.

Partner discounts: Promotional fares on Taipei MRT (periodic — check current rates) · YouBike first 30 minutes free when registered via app · Taipei city buses

Klook deal: Pre-loaded EasyCard combos — sometimes bundled with Airport MRT Express tickets — available for pick-up at the airport Klook counter, skipping the ticket desk queue.

🏙️ Taipei-based trips 🛒 Widest purchase network 💳 Limited editions
🟢
iPass 一卡通
Default choice for Kaohsiung and the south

Strengths: Native card on Kaohsiung MRT · Kaohsiung city buses and surrounding region · Kaohsiung Light Rail (circular coastal line) · Top up at 7-Eleven and FamilyMart across the whole island

Partner discounts: Promotions on Kaohsiung MRT and southern bus networks · Some museums and attractions in Kaohsiung offer iPass holder discounts

Note: If your itinerary spans both Taipei and Kaohsiung, iPass works perfectly in Taipei too — there is no practical reason to carry both cards.

🏙️ Kaohsiung base 🚋 Light Rail KH 🇹🇼 Island-wide transit
🟠
iCash 2.0 愛金卡
For FamilyMart regulars and design collectors

Strengths: Issued by FamilyMart, so every FamilyMart purchase earns Open Point loyalty points and qualifies for in-store exclusive discounts · Seasonal limited-edition designs · Transit performance identical to EasyCard and iPass

Limitations: Can only be purchased and topped up at FamilyMart — not at 7-Eleven or MRT stations · This is a meaningful inconvenience if you run low on balance far from a FamilyMart

Best for: Travellers who shop at FamilyMart daily (most Taiwan visitors do) and want their transit card to double as a rewards card.

Decision Matrix

Which Traveller Type Are You? Our Direct Recommendation

🗼

First-timer, basing in Taipei

→ EasyCard — Pick it up at the first Taipei MRT counter you reach after landing. Top up anywhere. Covers every activity you'll do in Taipei. The only reason to choose a different card is if your base city is not Taipei.

🏖️

First-timer, basing in Kaohsiung

→ iPass — Buy it at any Kaohsiung MRT station. Works perfectly on the coastal Light Rail line and Kaohsiung city buses. If you travel up to Taipei mid-trip it still works there too — no swap needed.

🏪

FamilyMart regular and foodie

→ iCash 2.0 — If you hit a FamilyMart once or twice a day (most Taiwan visitors do), the Open Point accumulation adds up meaningfully across a week-long trip. The one inconvenience: only top up at FamilyMart.

🗺️

Multi-city trip: Taipei + Kaohsiung + Taichung

→ Either EasyCard or iPass — Both work everywhere. Choose based on whichever city you're flying into, or which design you prefer. There is genuinely no transit advantage to holding one over the other for a multi-city Taiwan itinerary.

👪

Family trip, need multiple cards

→ EasyCard — The easiest card to buy in bulk for the whole family: available at every Taipei MRT station the moment you arrive. Children under 6 ride Taipei MRT free and don't need a card at all.

Practical Guide

Buy · Top Up · Get Your Deposit Back

🛒
Where to Buy
EasyCard: Every Taipei MRT service counter · 7-Eleven · FamilyMart · Hi-Life · OK Mart · Carrefour · Taoyuan Airport T1 and T2 counters
iPass: Kaohsiung MRT counters · 7-Eleven · FamilyMart nationwide
iCash 2.0: FamilyMart only
Deposit on all cards: NT$100
💰
Topping Up
EasyCard top-up machines at every Taipei MRT station accept NT$100, NT$500 and NT$1,000 notes · 7-Eleven · FamilyMart. iCash 2.0 tops up at FamilyMart only — keep that in mind if you're running low.
Maximum stored balance: NT$3,000 per card
💵
Getting Your Deposit Back
EasyCard: Return at a Taipei MRT service counter (not a machine). You receive your full remaining balance + NT$100 deposit minus NT$20 handling fee (net: NT$80 + remaining balance).
iPass: Return at Kaohsiung MRT stations or iPass offices.
Alternative: keep the card — IC cards never expire.
✈️
Klook EasyCard — Worth It?
Klook offers EasyCard combos pre-loaded with balance — sometimes bundled with Airport MRT Express tickets. Pick up at the Klook airport counter instead of queuing at the MRT desk. Total cost is comparable to buying at the station, but you save meaningful time during busy arrival periods.
🚴
YouBike 2.0 — All 3 Cards Work
YouBike 2.0 accepts all three IC cards — tap your card on the handlebar sensor to unlock. No pre-registration required. If you register via the EasyCard app your first 30 minutes are free per ride. Rate after that: NT$10 per 30 minutes.
📱
Can I Use My Phone Instead?
EasyCard has an NFC-enabled Android app for some devices. iPhone support is limited in Taiwan. For most international travellers a physical card is far more reliable and requires no setup. Stick with plastic unless you have a specific reason to go digital.
🛍️ Klook EasyCard Combo: Pre-loaded EasyCard + Airport MRT Express ticket bundled together — pick up at the Klook airport counter and walk straight to the train without queuing.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Taiwan IC Cards

Are EasyCard and iPass interchangeable?
Since 2018, all three Taiwan IC cards (EasyCard, iPass, iCash 2.0) have cross-acceptance on every MRT system across Taiwan, nearly all city buses, and YouBike. For everyday transit they are fully interchangeable — if you arrive in Taipei with an iPass, it works perfectly. The remaining differences are loyalty partner discounts tied to each brand, not transit functionality.
Where can I buy an EasyCard?
EasyCard is sold at every Taipei MRT station service counter, 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life, OK Mart, Carrefour, and at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 counters at Taoyuan International Airport. Standard cards cost NT$100 deposit with NT$0 starting balance. Pre-loaded versions with NT$100–500 balance are available at select locations. You can also order a combo deal on Klook to pick up at the airport.
Can I buy iPass in Taipei?
Yes. iPass is sold at every Kaohsiung MRT station service counter, plus 7-Eleven and FamilyMart stores across the whole island including Taipei. If your entire trip is based in Taipei, EasyCard is marginally more convenient — you can top up at any Taipei MRT station directly, whereas iPass top-up at MRT stations only works at Kaohsiung MRT. Both cards function identically for transit though.
What makes iCash 2.0 worth choosing?
iCash 2.0 is issued by FamilyMart, so every FamilyMart purchase earns Open Point loyalty points and can qualify for exclusive in-store discounts. For transit — MRT, buses, YouBike — iCash 2.0 performs identically to EasyCard and iPass. Its main drawback: you can only purchase and top it up at FamilyMart, not at 7-Eleven or MRT stations. If you're a FamilyMart regular (most Taiwan travellers are), the rewards accumulate genuinely across a week-long trip.
How do I claim my deposit back before leaving Taiwan?
Take your EasyCard to any Taipei MRT service window (not a machine). You receive your remaining balance in full plus the NT$100 deposit, minus a NT$20 processing fee — netting NT$80 deposit refund plus whatever balance remains on the card. iPass refunds are processed at Kaohsiung MRT station service counters or iPass offices nationwide. Many travellers skip the refund entirely and keep the card for their next Taiwan trip, since IC cards carry no expiry date.
Is buying an EasyCard on Klook better than at the airport?
Klook sells EasyCard combo deals that bundle the card with a pre-loaded balance and sometimes an Airport MRT Express ticket. You collect it at the Klook counter inside the terminal, bypassing the queue at the MRT service desk. The total price is comparable to buying directly at the airport, but the time saving is real — particularly useful during peak travel periods when MRT queues stretch. If you already know you want a pre-loaded card, the Klook combo is a sensible option.
